Chapter 12 Recovery Room #2
Rowan guided his own hand along the right side, above the hip. "Here. Not the spine."
Luca waited.
"You can place it."
His hands were warm even through the fabric. He settled the wrap where Rowan had indicated, adjusted the edge once, and removed his hands.
"Pressure?"
"Light."
Luca rested one palm over the pack. No rubbing. No attempt to locate the problem himself. Pressure exactly as requested.
The hotel room returned: one terrible chair, a pillow offered without insistence, Luca turning away.
"You did this at one seventeen," Rowan said.
"I moved a pillow. Medical history will remember me."
"You asked first."
The humor left Luca's face. "You said no."
"You listened."
"That's how no works."
Simple. Luca gave the answer as if it required no praise.
For Rowan, it had required evidence.
"Owen give you anything else?" Luca asked.
"Rotation. Core work."
"Before or after the heat?"
"After."
When the first warmth settled, Rowan rolled forward and removed the pack. He demonstrated the position Owen wanted: left shoulder grounded, right knee moving across only until the hip began to resist.
"You want help or an audience?" Luca asked.
"Counterpressure. Here."
He placed Luca's hand against the front of his right shoulder. Luca followed the direction without adding force. Rowan rotated. The movement pulled, then eased.
"Again," Rowan said.
They repeated it four times. Each pass required Rowan to distinguish useful tension from warning, then communicate it before Luca could guess. On the ice, Rowan gave instructions because he saw the whole shape. Here, he had to report from inside his own body.
"Stop."
Luca stopped immediately.
"Enough?"
"For that side."
They changed position. Luca's palm moved to Rowan's hip only after Rowan placed it there. No hesitation disguised as toughness. No concern made theatrical.
The second side moved more easily.
"Your turn," Rowan said when they finished.
Luca blinked. "My turn to be ancient?"
"Your left knee collapsed on the balance set."
"You were watching me."
"Occupational hazard."
Luca lay on the rug with exaggerated obedience. Rowan checked his hip rotation and found ordinary postgame tightness. He pressed lightly at the outside of Luca's thigh until the muscle released.
Luca went quiet.
"Pain?" Rowan asked.
"No."
"Then what?"
Luca looked up at him. "Nothing. I like when you take care of me too."
The directness entered without armor.
Rowan kept his hand where it was. "Good."
One word. Not enough for what Luca had offered. Enough to receive it without retreat.
The heat began to spread beneath the wrap. Luca's hand remained steady.
"Owen knows?" Luca asked after a while.
"He knows the baseline."
"Vale?"
"He knows I am available."
Luca did not say that was not the same as fine. He had heard enough in the training room.
"Does it scare you?" he asked.
Rowan's first response rose automatically. No. Managed. Normal. Every word true in a way that protected nothing.
"Sometimes," he said.
Luca's hand did not change pressure.
The room remained intact.
Rowan looked toward the bookcase rather than at him. "Not this. The recovery is predictable."
"The clock isn't."
Rowan turned his head.
Luca's gaze was on the heat pack, not his face. He had understood without being given the whole history: the older player doing the same work more often, the difference between available and endless.
"No," Rowan said. "It isn't."
No confession followed. Luca did not ask for one.
When the heat cycle ended, the wrap clicked. Luca lifted his hand.
Rowan missed the contact before he sat up.
"Better?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Luca began coiling the cable.
Rowan caught his wrist.
The movement was faster than the decision, but the decision existed. He drew Luca closer until Luca knelt between his knees.
"Still recovery?" Luca asked.
"No."
Rowan kissed him.
Luca let Rowan choose the angle and pace. One hand settled at Rowan's shoulder, careful without treating him as breakable. Rowan pulled him closer. The kiss deepened, warmed by the practical touch that had come before it.
There was no need to prove desire now. What changed was Rowan allowing it to remain connected to need.
They moved to the bedroom without urgency. Rowan told Luca what felt good and what did not. Luca listened with the same concentration he brought to a changing route, but without turning Rowan into a problem to solve. Pleasure became another form of direct information, asked for and received.
Later, Luca reached for his shirt from the floor.
The old sequence began. Dress. Distance. Restore the room before tenderness developed consequences.
"Stay," Rowan said.
Luca looked back.
The word was too large. Rowan corrected it because correction was still easier than uncertainty.
"Until the heat cycle would have ended," he added.
Luca glanced toward the clock. "Very medical."
"Twenty minutes."
"Strict protocol."
He left the shirt on the floor and lay down again.
Rowan expected him to fill the time with jokes. Instead Luca settled on his side, one hand resting on the sheet between them. Rowan placed his own hand over it.
They stayed like that while the house made its evening sounds. Ventilation. A car passing outside. The refrigerator starting in the kitchen.
At some point twenty minutes became thirty-two.
Neither mentioned it.
Luca left before midnight. At the door, he put on his shoes and looked back toward the kitchen.
"Food's in the refrigerator," he said. "Enough for tomorrow."
"I know how refrigerators work."
"Growth every day."
Rowan opened the door for him.
Luca touched two fingers to Rowan's wrist. The hotel gesture returned in reverse, brief and private.
"Night, Hale."
"Good night."
After Luca left, Rowan locked the door and returned to the kitchen. A glass container sat on the middle shelf, visible the moment he opened the refrigerator.
Chicken, rice, vegetables. Practical evidence.
He could move it to the back.
He left it where it was.
