Chapter 16 Penalty Trouble #2
Luca remained at his stall. Most of the room had emptied. Finn was speaking with media. Nolan had gone to check on Eli's shoulder. Equipment carts moved through the corridor.
"You handled that well," Luca said.
Rowan tied his shoe. "He knows better."
"People often do."
The midpoint conversation entered the room without being named.
Rowan looked at him.
Luca had changed into a dark sweater and jeans. No jacket yet. Waiting, perhaps, though Rowan had given him no reason to.
"Come over," Rowan said.
Luca's expression did not soften. "For what?"
The honest answers crowded too close. Because the house had felt wrong since Luca left. Because Rowan wanted to try speaking before another silence hardened. Because accepting comfort no longer seemed separate from giving something back.
"Dinner," he said.
Luca held his gaze. "Okay."
The drive home did not loosen Rowan's back or his thoughts. He replayed the last eight minutes at every red light without needing video: the retaliatory glove, the power-play seam, the late rebound in the slot.
He had spent his career believing preparation could reduce chaos to choices. Tonight every choice seemed visible only after the wrong one had gathered consequence.
At home he set his phone on the kitchen counter and completed half his mobility sequence while the soup heated. When the doorbell rang, he stood too quickly. The right hip caught, then released.
Luca noticed from the doorway.
His eyes moved once to Rowan's posture and away.
Since that night, even care had become something Luca would not offer without evidence Rowan could receive the person attached to it.
Rowan wanted to tell him the restraint was unnecessary.
He had not yet earned that answer.
At Rowan's house, the game followed them inside.
Rowan heated soup while Luca found bowls. The domestic sequence returned without ease. Luca placed spoons on the island. Rowan checked a message from Vale. They ate while the television replayed league highlights on mute.
Luca tried first.
"Mateo will bring Eli coffee and somehow make it a hostage negotiation."
"Eli will specify the exact coffee before Mateo arrives."
"Then reject it because the ratio is wrong."
Rowan almost smiled. His phone vibrated. A message from Nolan about Eli's shoulder range.
He read it, answered, and returned the phone facedown.
Luca watched the movement.
"He's okay?"
"Baseline. Owen will recheck tomorrow."
"Good."
Silence resumed.
After dinner, Luca moved behind Rowan at the sink and pressed a brief kiss below his ear.
The contact was light, playful, an offer rather than a demand.
Rowan's body responded before his mind released the game. He turned, caught Luca at the waist, and kissed him once.
Then his phone vibrated again on the counter.
Rowan looked.
Luca stepped back.
"You can check it."
"I don't need to."
"But you will."
The words held no accusation. That made them accurate.
Rowan checked. Vale had sent the penalty-kill clip.
The clip displayed the penalty-kill formation. Rowan marked the failed clear, wrote one note, and moved the cursor back.
From the living room, Luca turned on the television. A comedy played at low volume. Rowan knew Luca had chosen it because no plot required attention and because laughter might create an easier bridge back to them.
Rowan watched the clear a third time.
On screen, Finn reached the wall half a stride late. Rowan's stick angle forced the pass high but not out. The correction was already obvious.
He continued watching because work offered completion. The conversation waiting in the next room did not.
Ten minutes passed before Rowan closed the laptop.
By then the television was off.
Luca returned to the living room while Rowan opened it. The first clear. The failed second. Mateo in the box. Rowan watched the sequence once, then again.
When he looked up, Luca was standing near the door with his jacket on.
"You're leaving."
"You're working."
"I invited you here."
"You invited me to the room where you work."
Rowan closed the clip. "That is not fair."
Luca nodded. "Probably not."
The agreement took away Rowan's defense.
Luca put on his shoes. "I'm not angry. You had a bad loss. Mateo scared you. Gabriel scared you yesterday. You think if you stop holding the whole team for one evening, it will come apart."
"It is my responsibility."
"I know."
There it was again.
Luca opened the door. "But I can't keep coming over to compete with every consequence you haven't solved."
"You are not competing."
"Then stop making me lose."
The line landed without volume.
Rowan stood in the hall with the phone still in his hand.
He wanted to tell Luca to stay. He had done it once, qualified by a heat cycle because unqualified wanting had felt impossible.
Now the word returned.
"Stay."
Luca looked back.
Rowan had no plan beyond it. No dinner left to serve. No practical task.
For one second, possibility opened.
Then the phone vibrated again.
Neither man looked at it.
The sound was enough.
Luca's face closed gently. "Not tonight."
He left.
Rowan locked the door and returned to the kitchen. The penalty clip waited on his screen, paused with Mateo's glove lifted and the official's arm not yet raised.
A moment before consequence.
Rowan knew exactly what he should have done differently.
He still did not know how to arrive there in time.
