Chapter 20 Rival Ice

Kaito Sato won the opening faceoff so cleanly that Finn swore before the puck reached the boards.

Kaito moved through the first shift with exact economy. He delayed at the blue line, drew Nolan toward him, and slipped the puck into the space behind. Gabriel stopped the first shot. The rebound produced a second chance before Mateo swept it into the corner.

At the bench, Finn leaned toward Rowan. "He's opening earlier."

"Half a beat," Rowan agreed.

"He'll reverse if we seal the wall."

Rowan nodded once. "Luca, stay above his weak-side winger until we own the puck."

Luca sat on Rowan's other side and watched them translate Kaito into mechanics. Finn knew the rival center's habits with the resentment of a player who had studied too much tape. Kaito seemed to know exactly when Finn would abandon patience.

No first names today.

During warmups, Kaito had placed three pucks into the same upper corner without appearing to aim. Across the red line, Finn stretched against the boards and never turned his head. That refusal took effort. Luca recognized effort.

The broadcast version of their rivalry had been assembled from safe pieces: two gifted players from the same junior program, hard matchups, one fight eight years ago, playoff clips slowed until hostility became entertainment.

A montage on the arena screen had ended with Finn knocking Kaito into the glass.

The crowd cheered. Kaito watched the replay without expression. Finn skated away before it finished.

None of it explained why Finn had gone quiet over breakfast or why Kaito tracked him only when Finn faced elsewhere.

Rowan tapped Finn's shin pad before the anthem. Finn acknowledged him with a short nod. Whatever passed between them required no explanation Luca was allowed to hear.

Northstar spent the first five minutes defending.

Kaito changed the point of attack with short passes, never holding the puck long enough for Finn to hit him.

On his third shift, Finn chased below the goal line.

Kaito reversed the puck before contact, leaving Finn behind the net while the attack moved up the opposite wall.

"Middle," Rowan called.

Luca collapsed toward the slot and cut off the return feed. He chipped the puck past the defenseman, accelerated through neutral ice, and heard Rowan's stick strike once behind him.

The sound meant delay.

Luca held at the right circle. Both defenders retreated toward him. Rowan drove the middle, drawing the inside stick, then sent the puck back across the grain.

Luca shot above the goalie's pad.

1-0.

The celebration was immediate and public. Rowan's glove struck Luca's helmet. Finn wrapped an arm around both of them. Their shoulders collided against the glass while the visiting section rose behind the bench.

"Good hold," Rowan said.

Luca wanted to ask whether Rowan had loved Graham.

"Good pass," he replied.

On the next shift Kaito won a draw against Rowan, then glanced at Finn as the puck traveled back. Finn stepped forward before the defenseman committed. The return pass went through the lane Finn had vacated.

Gabriel saved them with his blocker.

"He baited you," Rowan said when they reached the bench.

Finn pulled at the cuff of his glove. "He got one look."

"He got two."

"You counting for him now?"

The edge in Finn's voice drew a quick glance from Jace at the next stall.

Rowan did not react to the challenge. "I'm counting threats. Play the one in front of you."

The rival team tied the game late in the first. Kaito carried below the goal line with Finn on his shoulder, absorbed contact, and sent a blind pass into the slot before Finn completed the switch. Their right wing scored before Gabriel could recover.

1-1.

Finn returned to the bench breathing hard.

"My man," he said before Rowan could identify the missed coverage.

"Next one," Rowan replied.

The phrase settled the hockey. It did nothing to the anger beneath it.

In the intermission, Vale drew Kaito's routes on the tactics board. Every line curved away from pressure.

"He wants you reaching," Vale told the forwards. "Stop giving him your hands and feet for free."

His marker tapped Finn's position once. No name, no public reprimand.

Finn retaped the knob of his stick though the tape was intact. Luca sat beside him.

"Does he always reverse under contact?" Luca asked.

"Only when the pressure comes from his left."

"Why?"

Finn tore the tape with his teeth. "Because he's predictable."

"You make predictable sound personal."

"Everything sounds personal in your accent."

The joke arrived on schedule and carried none of Finn's usual warmth. Luca let him keep the escape.

Rowan passed behind them toward the trainers' table, his stride shorter on the right. He had dismissed the stiffness twice that week. Luca almost followed, then remembered the parking level and stayed seated.

Early in the second, Luca intercepted a pass near center and broke forward with Finn joining on his left. One defenseman held the middle. The goalie's shoulders squared to Luca.

Finn's lane opened below the defender's stick.

Luca saw it.

He also saw the narrow strip of space above the goalie's blocker and imagined the shot crossing every highlight account before the team reached its hotel.

He pulled the puck inside and fired.

The goalie caught it cleanly.

Finn continued past the crease, struck the end boards with one shoulder, and circled back without comment.

Rowan waited at the bench door. "The pass was available."

"So was the shot."

"Not after the defender set his feet."

"I have scored from worse."

"That does not make worse correct."

Luca climbed over the boards. The correction was precise. It was also the longest direct sentence Rowan had given him since the foundation event.

Kaito scored on the next shift.

Finn tried to finish a hit along the wall instead of containing him. Kaito spun off before contact, took the return feed in motion, and changed the puck's angle off Finn's stick. Gabriel never saw the release through the screen.

1-2.

The arena played its rivalry montage again. Kaito's face filled the screen, calm after the goal. The camera cut to Finn at the bench.

Finn stared straight ahead.

Kaito skated past on his way to the faceoff circle. "Still covering other people's mistakes?"

Luca heard because he was nearest.

Finn smiled without humor. "Still calling yours strategy?"

An official moved between them before the exchange could become more than material for the broadcast.

Luca stored the lines beside Graham's name. Older players could compress whole histories into insults the public already understood.

Rowan leaned close to Finn. "Play him, not the history."

For a second, Luca thought Rowan knew more than he admitted.

"The history is hockey," Finn said.

"Then play this shift."

Finn did.

He stopped chasing Kaito and began removing options. On the next defensive draw, he stayed above the puck while Rowan tied up the center. Kaito attempted the reverse. Finn was already there.

Northstar carried the turnover through all three zones. Luca drove the far post, forcing the defense to collapse. Finn held below the goal line until Jace arrived late in the slot, then fed him through two sticks.

Jace scored before the goalie could seal the ice.

2-2.

Finn pointed once at Jace and skated directly to the bench. He gave Kaito no glance to use.

"Better," Rowan said.

Finn sat and reached for water. His hand shook once before closing around the bottle.

Luca noticed. Rowan must have as well. Neither of them spoke.

The third period became a contest of restraint. Mateo declined a retaliatory hit and moved the puck. Gabriel froze a dangerous rebound instead of forcing a play. Finn stayed on the defensive side of Kaito even when the center invited him lower.

Luca's restraint lasted six minutes.

He entered the zone with speed and met two defenders at the tops of the circles. Rowan supported underneath. Finn widened toward the far post. Either pass would preserve possession.

The shooting lane was smaller than both.

Luca shot anyway.

The puck struck the goalie's pad and jumped directly to Finn, who buried the rebound before Kaito could close.

3-2.

Finn lifted both arms. Kaito stopped at the edge of the crease, watching him. Luca reached the celebration first, laughing as Finn caught the front of his jersey.

The result rewarded Luca. The replay would not.

On the bench Rowan leaned over the boards. "You had two passes."

"We scored."

"The result is not the read."

Luca knew that. He also knew the score graphic would give him an assist, turning a stubborn choice into evidence of chemistry.

"Next one," he said.

Rowan's gaze held his for a beat. "Do you understand the correction?"

"Yes."

"Say it."

Heat rose beneath Luca's collar. "Finn scored because the rebound was kind. I should have moved the puck before both defenders closed."

"Correct."

The exchange stayed professional. Luca hated how grateful he felt for even that much attention.

Kaito tied the game with three minutes left without receiving a point. He won the offensive draw, rotated high, and pulled Finn far enough from the slot for a point shot to reach traffic. The puck deflected off Mateo's skate and slipped beneath Gabriel's arm.

3-3.

Finn bent over his stick after the goal.

Kaito passed close on the way to his bench. "You still follow."

Finn straightened so fast Luca expected a penalty before play resumed.

Rowan caught the back of Finn's jersey.

"He wants the reaction," Rowan said.

"He doesn't know what I want."

"Good. Keep it that way for three minutes."

Vale sent their line out for the next offensive draw. Kaito lined up opposite Rowan. Finn took the left wing. Luca settled on the right.

"Your rookie learns fast," Kaito said as the centers lowered over their sticks.

"He works," Rowan replied.

The puck dropped. Kaito pulled it backward, but Rowan stepped through his hands and stole the clearing attempt before it reached the defenseman. Finn drove the crease. Luca moved high, taking the weak-side defender with him.
