EPILOGUE

Renee - Four months later…

On the same day, Elara called me to tell me her grandmother passed; I couldn’t keep down food. Nausea followed me everywhere I went. When the day of her funeral came, I barely made it through the ceremony before I ran to the nearest bathroom.

“Babygirl?” Ezra knocked on the door and I couldn’t help him since I’d locked it after I’d come in.

My mind said, answer. My mouth said nothing because it was too busy puking up my insides. It felt like hours of bad decisions being deposited into the porcelain offering. My head was pounding, and I felt dizzier than I had before I got in here.

“If you don’t open this, I’m going to kick it in!” he shouted.

I crawled to the door carefully, unlocked it, but as soon as the noise from outside the room filtered in, I hurried back to the toilet.

“What did you eat?” he asked as he closed the door behind himself.

I smelled bacon and meat. Garlic and eggs. And it turned my stomach again.

Stop thinking about food.

A cold compress was put on the back of my neck and then he held one on my forehead.

I knew I fucking loved him.

Relief came in slow waves. But the cool cloth warmed much too soon.

“It’s not cold anymore,” I communicated to him, hoping he’d do that remedy thing again.

He did, and I swore when I was better I was going to give him the best blow job of his life.

Half an hour later, I was able to walk out, but I felt like shit. Ezra found Elara and had her come out to the front porch of this big ass mansion to hug and kiss me goodbye.

“Are you all right?” she asked.

“Not even. And now, I’m so hungry, but the thought of food is gross.” I shook my head.

“Ginger ale and crackers,” she coached. “Hold on.”

She disappeared inside and came back with just that.

“Let me know when we’re going to the doctor for that prenatal care visit,” she shouted as I was getting in the car.

I paused. I looked at Ezra and then at her.

“Tell me you’re not this slow!” she shouted.

Pregnant? Pregnant. Pregnant!

“She is,” Ezra shouted at her.

They both laughed as I got into the car, looking dumbfounded.

Pregnant.
