Ch40 Unveiling the Dark Hues of the Past #3

Right there in the living room, she saw her Mamaji, Sandeep, sitting comfortably on the sofa, deeply engrossed in the morning newspaper, while the distant clinking of utensils signaled that her Mamiji was busy in the kitchen.

A thick knot formed in Rivanya's throat. Her eyes overflowed as she took a step forward, her trembling voice breaking the heavy silence of the house. "Papa..."

Hearing that familiar, melodious voice, Sandeep froze.

It felt as though a long-awaited peace had suddenly washed over his soul.

He snapped his eyes up from the newspaper, and the moment his gaze landed on Rivanya, he stared at her in absolute, stunned shock.

Dropping the paper entirely, he stood up instantly, rushed across the room, and pulled her into a fierce, protective embrace.

Sandeep's own eyes filled with emotional tears as he held her tightly against his chest.

"Rivu... my child! How are you, beta? Are you alright? How is your health?" Sandeep poured out, his voice thick with fatherly concern.

Rivanya buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing softly as she clung to him. "I am perfectly fine, Papa. How are you? Is your health doing well?"

Sandeep pulled back slightly, framing her tear-stained face with both his warm palms, his eyes shining with affection. "Yes, beta, I am completely fine."

Rivanya's breath hitched as she choked out, "I miss all of you so incredibly much, Papa... so much..."

Sandeep's own heart cracked a little at her words, and he pulled her back into a tight embrace, patting her back gently.

"We miss you terribly too, beta. Ever since you left, this entire house has felt completely empty and hollow. The Lakshmi of my home has moved to another family. The moment you departed for your marital home, this entire house seemed to wither away, losing its vibrancy."

Just then, hearing the emotional voices from the living room, Vasudha walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron. "Who has arrived..."

The unfinished question died in her throat the exact millisecond her eyes fell upon Rivanya.

Her maternal heart couldn't bear the sight of her daughter's tears for another second.

Her eyes instantly filled to the brim, and she called out, her voice cracking with raw emotion, "Rivu... my... my baby..."

The moment Rivanya saw her Mamiji, she broke away from Sandeep and ran blindly into Vasudha's open arms, weeping uncontrollably.

To Vasudha, it felt as though the space of time had completely dissolved; it was exactly like the old days when a little Rivanya would run to her in tears and hide herself completely within the folds of her saree.

Today, her little Rivu had come back to her.

Rivanya simply clung to Vasudha, letting out all the heavy burdens of her heart, while Vasudha, holding her precious daughter close, couldn't stop her own tears from streaming down her cheeks.

Vasudha leaned down, kissing Rivanya's forehead with deep tenderness. "How is my baby doing? Are you keeping well, beta? Does Rudraksh treat you well? Does he look after you properly?"

Rivanya wiped her face, forcing a reassuring smile through her tears.

"I am absolutely fine, Maa. And Rudraksh... he keeps me incredibly happy. He looks after me with so much care and always stands by my side as my biggest strength. But first, tell me about yourself? How are you? Is your health alright?"

Vasudha smiled warmly, stroking her hair. "Yes, my child, I am completely healthy and fine."

Right at that moment, the door to the puja room clicked open, and Nani maa stepped out into the corridor.

The second her gaze landed on the tear-stained face of her granddaughter, her fragile emotional control shattered completely.

Rivanya bolted across the room and threw herself into Nani maa's frail embrace, the two of them weeping out of pure affection.

Rivanya had spent months suppressing how deeply she missed the comfort of her maternal roots, and today, surrounded by her loved ones, her tears refused to stop.

After all, a maternal home is the only sacred space on earth where a daughter, no matter her age or status, can shed her responsibilities and become a carefree little child again.

Everywhere else, even in the best of marital homes, she is bound by the heavy mantle of being a responsible daughter-in-law managing an entire household; but here, she was just their little girl.

As they were all holding onto each other, the front door opened, and Nanaji walked in from outside.

Seeing Rivanya standing in the living room, a profound mixture of absolute joy and intense emotional weight washed across his weathered face.

However, beneath the happiness, a sudden, heavy dread settled into his soul.

Looking at her bloodshot eyes and her sudden arrival, his conscience whispered the truth he knew that Rivanya had finally unsealed and read her mother's final letter.

He knew that the hour of reckoning had arrived, and she was here to demand the answers he had hidden for decades.

Rivanya slowly walked over to her grandfather. Without a single word, she wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face into his chest as she dissolved into a fresh, heartbreaking fit of tears.

As Nanaji held her trembling frame tightly, his own heart weeping silently, Rivanya tightened her grip, her broken whisper cutting through the quiet room like a knife.

"Nanu... I read Mumma's letter..."

Just as Nanaji had anticipated, seeing Rivanya's heartbreaking state shattered his remaining emotional control.

The heavy burden of guilt he had carried for decades finally broke him, and he collapsed onto his knees right there on the floor, weeping bitterly.

Rivanya instantly sank down with him, matching his posture.

Through his continuous sobs, Nanaji joined his trembling hands. "Please forgive me, beta... your Nanaji kept such a massive, life-altering truth hidden from you all these years. Please forgive me, my child."

Rivanya immediately shook her head, tears streaming down her face as she gently lowered his hands. "No, Nanu, please don't say that. I know there must have been a severe compulsion that forced you all to keep this secret from me. Please do not blame yourself. Please compose yourself, Nanu..."

Nanaji shook his head in bitter despair. "No, beta. The fault lies entirely with me. I am the only one who hid this truth. And I didn't just hide it from you I kept it from everyone. No one else in this entire household knows a single thing about this."

A deep confusion clouded Sandeep's face as he stepped forward, looking between his father and his niece. "What on earth are you both talking about, Papa? What did you hide from us? Please tell me. And Rivu, what letter are you speaking of?"

Before anyone could answer, the front door burst open. Dhara walked into the house, and the exact second her eyes landed on Rivanya, her joy knew absolutely no bounds. She screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing through the entire courtyard, "Rivuuuuuuu! You're back!"

The dark, suffocating tension in the room briefly cracked as Rivanya's face lit up at the sight of her sister. Both girls locked eyes and ran blindly toward each other, crashing into a fierce, emotional embrace. They held onto one another tightly, crying out of pure love and a shared longing.

"I missed you so much, Rivu... I really, really did," Dhara choked out, squeezing her tightly.

Rivanya wept softly against her shoulder, nodding. "I missed you more, Dharu... I really missed you so much more..."

Pulling back just an inch, Rivanya playfully pinched Dhara's nose, trying to cut through the heavy atmosphere. "Unbelievable. Even today, your nose turns bright red the moment you start crying."

Dhara cracked a watery smile and immediately pinched Rivanya's nose in return. "Well, I take after my sister, don't I? That's why my nose turns red just like yours."

A soft, genuine laughter rippled between the two sisters for a fleeting second.

But the gravity of the situation returned almost instantly.

Rivanya turned a serious gaze toward her sister and whispered, "Dharu, you need to stay quiet and just listen now. There are a lot of hidden things that none of us knew about. Just don't ask any questions right now, okay? Just listen."

Dhara nodded quietly, sensing the immense weight in the room.

Rivanya then turned around and walked back to Nanaji, whom Nani maa had gently helped up and seated on the sofa.

Rivanya knelt down right at his feet, resting her hands on his knees as she looked up into his weathered face.

"Nanu, whatever the truth may be, I am fully prepared to hear it today. Please tell me. These unanswered questions are eating me alive from the inside out. Please tell me... what actually happened with Mumma?"

Sandeep stepped closer, his anxiety peaking. "Rivu, what is happening here? Will someone please enlighten me? What truth? What questions are you talking about?"

Without a word, Rivanya reached into her small travel bag and pulled out Katha's final two-page letter.

With a trembling hand, she extended it toward her uncle.

Sandeep took the crisp pages, his brow furrowing as his eyes began to scan his late sister's handwriting.

As he absorbed the shocking lines, the color completely drained from his face.

His knees grew weak, and he dropped heavily onto the sofa behind him, utterly paralyzed by shock.

Vasudha, completely alarmed by her husband's reaction, quickly took the paper from his limp fingers.

Dhara leaned over her shoulder, and the two of them read the letter together.

Within seconds, a deafening shock gripped the entire room.

Every single family member stood completely frozen, unable to process the magnitude of the deception.
