Chapter 20

Justin woke her, and Sailor glared at him as she sat up. He stepped back, then gestured to the door. “Geo wants you downstairs? Told me to come get you? Said to tell you you had clothes to change into? Mig put them in here earlier? I think that’s them there at the foot of the bed. Uhh… will you get dressed, or do I need to…”

“Get out, asshole. I’ll get dressed and come down on my own,” she told him angrily, sliding off the high bed.

“He said…”

“Get out! I’ll be down in a minute!” she yelled, then threw her shoe at him as she took it off.

Justin fled.

Sailor quickly changed into the dress and opened the door as she pinned her hair up and looked up at Davon. He was in the hall, reaching for the door, looking furious.

“What?!?” she demanded, then shoved past him to the stairs.

“Watch your fucking attitude!” Davon hissed, taking hold of her arm and pulling her down the stairs.

“Let go! I was going down on my own, you don't get to manhandle me, prick!” she yelled loudly, then kicked him. When he kept pulling, she yanked back on her arm, then lunged forward and bit his wrist as hard as she could.

“Fucking CUNT!” Davon screamed, yanking his wrist away.

Sailor ran down the stairs and into the living room where Geo was, as Davon caught up with her and jerked her up short.

“What the fuck?” Geo raged, jumping up.

“Bitch tried to get away!”

“I wasn’t! I was coming down to Geo like I TOLD you I was going to! Let go, prick! Stop jerking me around!”

“You put hands on her again, and you lose your fuckin’ hands,” Mig told Davon darkly from a few inches behind them. “You best check yourself.”

“You got anger with me, you speak up, fool. You don't put hands on what’s mine. I TOL’ you her condition! Som’in happens, I’m’a beat YOUR ass, bitch,” Geo told Davon as Davon bulled up, even more angry now.

“She BIT me! Kicked me and bit me and ran!”

“You shouldn’t ’a put hands on ‘r!”

“Justin said she…”

“Don't bring me into this, man!” Justin spoke up quickly. “I said she wanted to come down on her own. YOU decided she needed an escort.”

“You SAID to go get her!” Davon went on to Geo. “You told Justin to go get her!”

“He did. He woke her, and she said she was comin’! You goin’ up there after her ta put hands on ‘r was you bein’...” Geo snarled, pulling his gun out.

Sailor cut him off before he could go on and work himself up to shooting Davon. “He didn’t hurt me! I’m fine, and he knows now that I can walk up and down stairs on my own. What do you need?” she asked Geo, hugging herself and hating the skimpy dress and how cold it was in the house.

“Watch that fuckin’ tone,” Geo growled down at her, his eyes glittering.

Sailor huffed, rolling her eyes, then shook her head. “Sorry,” she snapped, not sorry at all. “I’m just… I haven’t hardly sl ept, and he woke me up from another nightmare, and… today has been a lot. The last few days have been a lot. I’m sorry. What do you need, Geo?”

“Sit down,” he scowled, sitting down and motioning to the couch next to him. “I had these fools go back to school today. Tol’ ‘m they wasn’t droppin’ out this close ta graduatin’.”

“Good for them?” she asked, confused.

“They gonna be watchin’ you, Rue. You gon’ start back day after tomorrah. I got your excuse all done up, your mom's, and gram. School said no problem, you could catch up. They have your homework you missed.”

“Thanks,” she mumbled, looking at Davon and Justin. Justin was bright red, but Davon still looked pissed. Did Geo really trust him? Maybe she could convince Davon to help her escape?

“I got som’in else for you,” Geo went on, motioning to Mig.

Mig called back, and two men brought in two medium plastic totes set near her feet.

“What is it?” she asked, leaning up to lift the lid on the closer one.

“Careful,” Davon called more gently than he’d looked seconds before.

Sailor hesitated, then peeked inside.

It took her a moment to realize what she was seeing, then she went white and slammed the lid shut, shaking her head. “Is that… was that my algebra teacher?” she asked almost hysterically as she scooted away from the boxes.

“Jus’ his head,” Geo chuckled. “Other box is that other piece a shit who was tryna prey on you.”

“Mr. Kinnish and Mr. Pierson,” Justin spoke up, his face still red.

“Anyone else fuck with you?” Geo asked Sailor as she pushed into him, then turned and hid her face.

“I’m going to throw up!” she wailed.

Hands yanked her off Geo and spun her, holding her over an empty bowl that had had food in it recently.

“What’d I say about putin’ hands on ‘r?” Geo demanded heatedly.

“I’m helping! Did you want her to puke on you?” Davon asked angrily.

Sailor whimpered, then heaved and brought up everything she’d eaten that day as Geo took her from Davon and held her over the bowl.

“Oh god,” she cried, hanging her head as a throbbing pain started behind her eyes.

“You cain’t deal with blood?” Geo asked angrily.

“She’s pregnant, she has a tender stomach, and she’s always been tender-hearted. I TOLD you she wouldn’t want to see those or even know about them. That’s not a gift in her eyes, it’s just…”

“Shut your fuckin’ mouth, fool! Mig, get that bitch outta my sight ‘fore I fuckin’ kill ‘m!”

Sailor broke down in tears, flinching when a cool, wet cloth wiped her mouth. Turning away from the light and the room, she sobbed brokenly with her face in Geo’s shoulder as he gripped her.

“Take them out, get ‘r a drink,” Geo called, his voice pitched low. “There’s Sprite in the fridge. Stop cryin’ like that, you’re gonna make yourself sick again! Dry it up! Enough! Sit up here and sip on this,” he demanded, turning her and sitting her up, putting a cold can to her lips.

Sailor flinched back again, the pop making her nose burn.

“Calm the fuck down,” Geo ordered her, letting her roll back into him and bury her face in his stomach as she curled up and clutched him.

Breathing him in, his cologne or whatever it was, made Sailor’s stomach ease some. It was a clean, fresh smell and not too strong. She managed to settle down, but she felt numb and lost as she curled up there and hid from the world.

The nightmare.

The voices droned around her, but she didn’t really hear them as she pressed into him and lost herself, finally passing out.
