Puppy Steps

“Care to dance?” Sawyer asked me. Now that the show was over, the stage went back to being the dance floor, and people were already filling it.
“I don’t really know how…”
“No one does.” He waggled his eyebrows at me and held out a hand. “C’mon, they’re playing a slow song, and you’re the one who says I should be more romantic,” he said at my hesitation.
“Fine.” I gave him my hand and let him pull me to my feet.
“What do I do?” I whispered as we joined the small throng swaying there.
“Just put your hands on my hips and move with the music,” Sawyer whispered, his breath tickling my ear.
The music was too loud, and the space was humid from too many bodies packed inside, but despite all that, I never wanted to leave this time or place. Swaying this close to Sawyer made me think about last night. I wished he could have stayed so we could have woken up together in the morning.
We danced for what felt like hours until Sawyer caught me yawning.
“Time to get the pumpkins to bed,” Sawyer said with a laugh, pulling me off the dancefloor behind him.
“Not a pumpkin,” I said, narrowing my eyes at him. We reached the table where Hector still sat. He was scribbling in a notebook as Leon leaned over him, yelling something into his ear. Leon’s posture was open and his smile easy, but Hector seemed oblivious to Leon’s flirting. Or maybe not as oblivious as I thought, as when we got closer, I saw he was bright red and clearly using the writing as a reason not to look at Leon.
We said our goodbyes and headed out. Sawyer and I held hands on the walk back to his car.
