Chapter Eleven

My fingers gripped Claire’s as I guided her down the stone staircase to the lower level of the villa where the stones met the soft, white sand.

Her hand in mine was a lifeline, a reassuring warmth amid the cooling late afternoon air.

The sensation of her fingers intertwined with mine was both electrifying and calming.

Each step we took toward the ocean was a step toward the unknown, but it felt right, necessary even.

I breathed her in deeply as we walked, pressing my face into the nape of her neck as I held her from behind.

Her hair was a cascade of rich brown waves, surrounding me like a silken curtain.

I felt an intense urge to keep her close, to ensure that this moment, this connection, was preserved.

The thought of her leaving, of her slipping away, was unbearable.

As she sat her bag down and removed her shoes, I released her hand, watching her every move with a mix of anticipation and admiration.

Claire’s dress billowed gently in the breeze as she walked toward the waves, the dark water meeting her toes and causing her to shiver slightly.

It was a sight that stirred something deep within me.

She was so effortlessly beautiful, so captivatingly real in that moment.

I undressed slowly as I stared into her eyes. Letting each button come undone, and with them, raising the temperature of the air around us. Claire locked into my gaze as if she were afraid what may happen if her eyes wandered.

My slacks dropped into the sand, and with a wink in her direction, I ran to the water. The cool waves embraced me as I submerged briefly and reemerged, slicking my hair back from my face with my fingers.

I called out to her playfully, “Your turn, love!”

There was a thrill in seeing her react, her laughter mingling with the sound of the waves.

Claire’s eyes were fixed on me as she began to remove her dress from over her head, revealing a black lace bra and matching hip-hugging bottoms. The sight of her, so unguarded and vulnerable, stirred a fierce, protective desire within me.

I could see the hesitation in her eyes as she stepped into the water, and I moved closer to her, inviting her to come nearer.

When she was within arm’s reach, I pulled her close, the water rocking our bodies gently. I could feel her warmth, her heartbeat, as she laughed and joked about the bra. “You owe me a new bra,” she said between laughs.

I whispered back, “I’ll give you whatever you want.”

The words were sincere, though I knew that what I wanted most was for her to stay with me, to let this connection deepen. “Watch the sunset with me,” I added softly, turning her so that she was pressed against my torso, holding her tightly as the waves nipped at our waists.

We stood there, wrapped in each other’s embrace, as the minutes passed by. I took every opportunity to caress her neck, feeling her body shift and vibrate against mine. My hands explored the curves of her body freely with no protest as her head leaned back against my chest.

The sky darkened slowly, stars appearing like diamonds scattered across a velvet canvas. The sight was breathtaking, and Claire’s gasp of wonder at the starry sky was a testament to the beauty of the moment.

“Wow. We don’t have stars like this in New York,” she murmured, her voice laced with awe.

I chuckled, my eyes reflecting the starlight as I teased her, “Sounds like you’re saying you want to stay here with me forever.”

She laughed, but there was a seriousness in her tone when she asked, “So, how many young, lonely women do you do this with?”

The question caught me off guard, and I met her intense stare with a smile. “Is that a serious question?” I asked, brushing my hair back, hiding my irritation.

“Dead serious. I want to know. Honest answer only,” she asked, her voice radiating with seriousness.

This is it. She is invested. This was the last box to check before she would be mine.

I sighed, my voice steady as I responded, “None. It has been…quite some time for me.”

Her reaction was a mix of skepticism and surprise. “I don’t know if I should believe you or not,” she said, her smile not quite reaching her eyes.

I saw the shadow of past hurts in her expression, the remnants of a trust broken. “Is there anything I can say or do to make you trust me?” I asked earnestly, wanting to bridge the gap between us.

Claire’s thoughts were clearly clouded by her recent past. I could sense her struggle, her wariness. “I don’t think there is,” she replied softly.

I felt a pang of empathy as I saw her sadness. “Are you okay?” I asked gently.

She paused, her attention drifting to the horizon as she tried to hold back the weight of her emotions. “My breakup a month ago. I think it hit me harder than I let on,” she admitted, her voice breaking with a quiet sadness.

I nodded, respecting her vulnerability but desperately wanting to understand her. “Do you care to speak about it? I promise I will not judge.”

Claire walked toward the sand, her steps growing heavier and slower with each one. She sat down quietly, the waves still lapping at her feet. I followed her, giving her space but staying close, wanting to be there for her in whatever way she needed.

As I watched her, my thoughts were a jumble of conflicting emotions.

I wanted to comfort her, to assure her that I was different from her past experiences.

I wanted to hold onto this moment, to keep her close, and to build something real amid the complexities of our entangled lives.

And more than anything, I needed to know how she was broken so that I could be the one to mend her.

I quickly followed Claire up the beach, taking my place in the sand a few feet from her.

I turned my body to face her as the cold spray of the waves hit my back in a refreshing, gentle mist. Her face was bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight, marked by a mixture of vulnerability and contemplation.

When she finally spoke, her voice was low, almost resigned. “Seven years,” she said definitively, her tone carrying a weight of finality. She gave a small shrug, her eyes avoiding mine. “He just, I guess, didn’t want to settle down. Maybe at all. Maybe just not with me.”

The words hung in the air between us, and I could not help but be genuinely puzzled. “How is that possible? In all that time?” I asked, my voice betraying my genuine confusion and concern.

Claire looked at me, her eyes searching mine for understanding. She nodded slowly. “That’s what I thought too. I waited for him for years. I made life decisions solely around his needs and his career.”

She paused, her stare dropping to the sand.

There was a visible pain in her expression as she continued.

“I lost touch with friends when I started putting him above them. I put so much into it, and all he said was that he couldn’t commit and didn’t want to waste my time anymore.

That was it. Now I don’t really have anyone.

It’s like…starting over. Except now, I’m in my late twenties. I can’t even remember who I really am.”

Hearing her recount her heartbreak, I felt a pang of sympathy in my chest. It struck me how deeply her past had impacted her. “I’m sorry,” I said, reaching out to take her hand in mine.

My touch was meant to offer comfort, a tangible connection in the midst of her emotional turmoil.

“I do not know much about dating. God, it has been a long time for me. If I were with someone, I’d be with them with the intent of being with them forever.

I can’t understand what that guy was thinking. ”

Claire pulled her hand from mine and wrapped her arms around herself, a protective gesture against the cold sea breeze—or maybe the sudden burn of remembering heartbreak.

Her body language spoke of both physical and emotional chill, and I moved closer to her, wanting to shield her from the world’s cruelties.

I crawled across the sand, closing the distance between us, and wrapped my arms around her.

“I know I have said this before, but I think you’re pretty incredible,” I said softly, my voice gentle as I leaned in to speak near her ear.

Her head fell against her chest, and I could feel her surrender to the moment.

As Claire sat silently, her emotions ebbing and flowing like the waves at our feet, I reached for a towel and gently wrapped it around her shoulders. “Would you like to go inside and join me for dinner?” I asked, my tone inviting, hoping to offer a small distraction and some solace.

Claire nodded silently, and together, we made our way up the beach and back toward my villa.

I stayed close as she stopped to retrieve her shoes and bag at the base of the staircase.

The villa’s lights cast a warm, inviting glow, and I could see her curiosity piqued when she pointed at the lower level just below the terrace.

“What’s that?” she asked.

“Oh, that’s the lower terrace and my chamber,” I replied casually.

“Your…chamber?” Claire questioned with amusement.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Oh yes, my bedroom.”

Claire’s eyes sparkled with intrigue. “Can I see it?” she asked.

I paused, my head dropping low as I whispered, “I’ll give you anything you ask for.”

Her round face was illuminated by the warm lights streaming down from the terrace above, adding a touch of ethereal beauty to her expression.

As we approached the glass doors, I pulled them open; the panes collapsed one into the other with a satisfying soft thud.

The space reflected the same rustic charm as the living area above with its wooden beams, cream fabrics, and touches of red velvet.

The room was dominated by my bed, made entirely of intricate stonework, an integral part of the villa itself as it extended from the ground to the ceiling of the wall behind it.
