Chapter Thirty

As I slept, my dreams were filled with Arik.

I could feel his arms around me, the warmth of his embrace.

Each touch, each kiss, ignited a fire in me, making my heart race and my chest feel tight.

Even in my dreams, the slightest contact with his skin sent shivers down my spine, as if his touch were electrifying every nerve in my body.

I imagined us together on a deserted beach, the moonlight dancing on the water as we swam beneath the stars. The cool, salty water wrapped around us, and his presence was like a soothing balm against the night. It was perfect, a dreamy escape from the chaos of reality.

But then, my dream took a dark turn. The serene beach scene twisted into a nightmare, filled with piercing screams and blood.

I was back on the beach, but now it was a massacre.

Arik stood among a sea of lifeless bodies, his once-handsome face twisted into something monstrous and terrifying.

Blood smeared his features, and the sight of him like that made my heart race in a way that was no longer romantic but pure, paralyzing fear.

I gasped, jolted awake, my body drenched in cold sweat. As I sat up in bed, my breath came in ragged gasps, my mind struggling to shake off the remnants of the nightmare. The room was quiet, eerily still, and I was alone.

Just as I was trying to calm myself, I noticed a shadow creeping under the door. My heart skipped a beat. I assumed it was Sam, staying close and making sure I was okay. Maybe he had heard me gasp and decided to check in.

I quietly got out of bed, my feet barely making a sound as I approached the door. With trembling hands, I undid the locks and opened the door, only to find Arik standing there, his presence as imposing as it was comforting.

“You were scared,” he said softly, his voice tinged with concern.

“I had a nightmare,” I replied, trying to sound more composed than I felt. “I’m okay.”

Arik’s stare was intense, his eyes searching mine.

“I thought I was getting to process alone?” I asked, my voice carrying an undertone of sadness.

“You are,” he said, giving me a reassuring smile. “It doesn’t mean I am not nearby.”

He looked at me with an almost wistful expression.

“Don’t you sleep?” I asked, noticing the time on the clock was 3:18 in the morning.

“Oh, no, not really,” he said with a small smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “That part about vampires is mostly true. It is more like a meditative state, not a deep sleep.”

I yawned, covering my mouth with my hand as I turned away, feeling the exhaustion from the day’s events.

He was here. Finally.

“I cannot do this,” Arik said suddenly, his voice cold and serious, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made me shiver.

“Can’t do what?” I asked, confusion clouding my mind.

“Stay away from you,” he replied, his voice barely above a whisper, filled with a depth of emotion that made my heart ache.

His words hung in the air between us, heavy and charged. I could see the turmoil in his eyes, the struggle he was facing. Despite the fear that lingered from my nightmare, a part of me longed to reach out to him, to bridge the gap between us that seemed to grow with every passing moment.

I stood there; my heart caught between fear and an inexplicable yearning for him.

The vulnerability in his expression mirrored my own, and in that moment, the line between dread and desire blurred, leaving me adrift in a sea of conflicting emotions.

Before I could even think of what to say, his movements were a blur of speed and power.

In less than a heartbeat, Arik had lifted me effortlessly, my heart racing as he carried me with a strength that was both thrilling and terrifying.

He closed the door behind him with a decisive click, and then, in one swift motion, lay me gently on the bed.

My breath hitched as I tried to sit up, but before I could even react, he was on top of me.

His lips were warm and urgent against my neck, sending shivers across my skin.

His hands were everywhere, one arm wrapped possessively around my body, while the other gripped the back of my neck with firm, yet tender pressure.

The sensation of his touch made me gasp and moan involuntarily.

I dug my nails into his back, feeling the contours of his muscles beneath my fingertips, and I instinctively wrapped my calf around his legs, pulling him closer.

In an electrifying flash, Arik was on his feet beside the bed, his movements fluid and almost predatory.

He slowly began unbuttoning his black shirt, each button coming undone with a deliberate slowness that made my pulse quicken.

As his pale torso became exposed, inch by tantalizing inch, I couldn’t tear my eyes away.

The shirt fell to the ground, and before it even touched the floor, Arik was removing his belt.

His eyes froze on my body as he pulled the thin black leather from each loop.

Just as the belt and pants began their descent to the floor, he was on top of me again, his hands fierce and unrelenting as he tore my dress from my body.

The fabric ripped apart in one powerful motion, leaving me clad only in a delicate lace bralette and thong.

I lay back, my head sinking into the pillow, my mind swirling with the overwhelming realization that I was surrendering completely to him.

In life and death, I am his.

Arik’s lips crashed against mine with a hunger that matched the urgency in his movements.

I could feel him pressing against me, every inch of him straining through the thin fabric of his boxers.

His thrusts were feverous, driving me wild as he moved with a relentless rhythm.

My breathing grew ragged, and I moaned into his mouth, our bodies moving in a desperate, sensual dance.

Then, in an instant, Arik’s presence vanished. He appeared against the wall, his body rigid and tense as his chest heaved. I was left breathless and confused, my heart pounding in my chest as I tried to make sense of his abrupt departure.

“Why did you stop?” I gasped, my voice trembling with frustration and a hint of desperation. “Why do you always fucking stop?”

Arik’s body seemed almost glued to the wall, his fists clenched at his sides, his gaze fixed on the door rather than on me.

“You don’t know everything,” he said, his voice strained and laden with a mix of anguish and determination. “I can’t do this without you knowing absolutely everything.”

I sat up, pulling the comforter around me, my mind racing to catch up with the whirlwind of emotions. “There’s more?” I stammered, struggling to keep my voice steady.

Arik began to pace, his movements reflecting his inner turmoil. “Claire, I do not know if I can control myself. That is why I always stop. I have been protecting you.”

The shock of his words hit me like a cold wave. “Oh,” I managed, my voice barely a whisper.

My confusion deepened as I tried to understand the full extent of his situation. “Wait, are you telling me you haven’t had sex in hundreds of years?” I asked, incredulously.

“Three hundred and sixty-two years, to be exact,” Arik responded, his voice tinged with frustration and a touch of bitterness.

I blinked rapidly, trying to process his words without adding to his distress. Arik stopped pacing and appeared at the edge of the bed, his back turned to me, his posture heavy with unresolved tension. He let out a deep sigh, his shoulders sagging with a mix of frustration and resignation.

“I still don’t understand,” I said, my voice filled with a mix of confusion and a desperate need for clarity.

In a sudden outburst, Arik slammed his fist into the wall, the impact reverberating through the room.

His anger was palpable, a raw and visceral expression of the internal battle he was facing.

As I lay there, my heart pounding wildly, Arik’s voice cut through the haze of desire and confusion that had enveloped me.

His words were laced with a deep, consuming intensity that sent a shiver down my spine.

“I may lose control. I may hurt you…or bite you and be unable to stop. Ambrosio said I may kill you.” He sighed; his eyes locked in the distance.

His confession made my breath hitch, and a wave of fear swept over me. “Can’t I stop you?” I stammered, my voice trembling with a mix of desperation and dread.

A dark, resonant laugh filled the room, and before I could react, Arik was on top of me again. His hands were suddenly pressing my wrists down against the bed, pinning me beneath him. I was completely at his mercy; my body caught in a state of electrified anticipation and helplessness.

His face was inches from mine as he whispered into my ear, his breath warm and haunting, “I will turn into a monster. You will not be able to stop me. No matter how hard I try, I cannot guarantee your survival.”

A gasp escaped my lips, and I shut my eyes tightly, trying to escape the crushing weight of his words.

The sensation of Arik’s body leaving mine was almost a relief, though it was quickly replaced by an aching emptiness.

When I opened my eyes, he was standing a few feet away, his expression a tumult of anguish and regret.

“I thought you weren’t going to hurt me?” I whispered, my voice cracking as tears began to well up in my eyes. The pain of his words and the fear of his intentions were too much to bear.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Arik said, his voice breaking as he shook his head. “If I lose you…”

The vulnerability in his voice made my heart ache. I could see the struggle in his eyes, the torment of knowing he could never fully explain the gravity of his situation without risking everything.

He breathed in deeply before continuing. “I need you to know. You need to know everything. I cannot keep this from you. Sure, at any point I could have just done it and taken my chances. I could have turned you days ago. Or I could have killed you days ago.”
