Chapter 8 The Garden

I had a system for insomnia.

Most people approached it wrong, they lay in the dark fighting it, which was the surest way to lose.

The trick was to stop treating wakefulness as a problem to be solved and start treating it as a condition to be managed.

Get up. Do something deliberate. Let the body understand that the mind was occupied and would no longer be taking requests.

At five in the morning, four days into a new city and a new arrangement and a new version of my life, I got up.

I put on the clothes I'd left on the chair, jeans, a sweater, the automatic assembly of someone who didn't need light for the task. I didn't turn on the lamp. The dark was fine. I knew the room well enough by now that I could move through it without negotiating with my shins.

Downstairs, the house was quiet in the specific way of large old buildings at pre-dawn, a silence with texture to it, with the low sound of the house settling and the distant sound of the city that never fully stopped.

I went to the kitchen, considered the coffee maker for a moment, and decided on water instead.

I wasn't trying to stay awake. I was just trying to be somewhere that wasn't horizontal.

The door to the garden was unlocked.

I noticed this as I reached for the handle, noticed it as a new fact, since it had been locked on the two previous nights when I'd checked. I opened the door anyway.

The garden at five in the morning was a different thing than the garden at any other hour.

The darkness was retreating but not gone, that specific pre-dawn state where the sky had moved from black to a deep blue-gray and the shapes of things were visible without being fully defined.

The magnolias were large dark presences against a slightly lighter dark.

The garden lamp was off, which meant the stone bench at the edge of the formal section was barely visible, a pale shape in the dimness.

A pale shape beside which there was another shape, larger, that resolved, as I got closer, into a man.

Dominic was sitting on the bench.

He had a coffee cup in his right hand and his jacket was gone and his collar was open, and he was looking at the magnolias with the quality of attention you gave to things you had looked at many times and still found requiring attention.

He heard me, or registered me in whatever way he registered things, which was not always audibly, and looked over as I came down the path, but said nothing.

I sat at the other end of the bench.

There was space between us. I left it there.

The city made its sounds: a distant car, somewhere, moving through the quiet streets; a dog, two blocks over, saying something to the dark and then stopping; the sound of the river, or what I imagined was the river, though I wasn't sure you could actually hear it from here.

New Orleans at five in the morning was not silent, not exactly, it was in conversation with itself, low and continuous, the murmur of a city that never fully lost consciousness.

We sat in it for a long time without speaking.

I had expected this to be uncomfortable.

Two people who barely knew each other in a garden before dawn, neither of them explaining themselves, I had expected the silence to demand filling, to create the particular social pressure that made people say things they hadn't intended in order to discharge the tension of not speaking.

It didn't.

The silence was simply the silence. It had the quality of something that had arrived and was being permitted to stay, not fought, not managed.

He wasn't looking at me. I wasn't looking at him.

We were both looking at the magnolias, which were becoming more defined as the sky continued its slow negotiation from dark to less dark, their large waxy leaves gaining first their shapes and then, gradually, their colors.

At some point he reached down and produced a small thermos from beside the bench. He filled his cup, then held the thermos up without looking at me. A question, framed without words.

I shook my head.

He set it back down. No comment. No adjustment of expression. As if the offer and the refusal were both equally acceptable outcomes.

I noted that I had expected him to ask why.

After ten minutes, I counted, not from restlessness but from habit, he spoke.

"My grandfather planted them." He didn't indicate which ones. There was no need; we were looking at the same things. "Every tree in this section. He had them brought from a nursery in Mississippi, specific variety, he was particular about the bloom. Spent six months on the placement."

I looked at the trees. Six months of placement had produced something that looked uncontrived, which was either the sign of very good planning or very good luck.

"He planted them himself?" I asked.

"Supervised." The word carried weight, the specific weight of someone choosing the accurate term over the charitable one. "He directed. Other people dug."

I heard what was underneath that. "Was that how he did most things?"

A pause. He turned his coffee cup once in his hand, the same deliberate gesture I'd seen him make with the water glass at dinner.

"Yes," he said.

Just that. No elaboration, no context, no softening of the admission. His grandfather had been the kind of man who directed while other people did the work, and Dominic was not going to pretend otherwise.

"But he wanted the trees," I said.

"He wanted the trees." He looked at the nearest magnolia, large, old, the bark gray and furrowed in the way of something that had been there long enough to develop character.

"I asked him once why he spent so much time on the garden when he never spent time in it.

He had people to tend it, people to maintain it.

He came out here perhaps once a month." A breath.

"He said it wasn't about the time in it. It was about knowing it was there."

The sky had shifted again. The blue-gray was becoming something lighter, with the faintest suggestion of warmth at the horizon.

"What was he like," I said.

Dominic was quiet for a moment.

"Effective," he said finally. "Certain of his own judgment.

Convinced that the most important thing he could do was ensure that everything he built would outlast him.

" He looked at the bench, at the stone of it, the weathering of it, the particular patina of something that had been rained on and dried out and rained on again for many years.

"He built things that outlasted him. He was right about that.

" A pause. "He was wrong about some other things. "

He didn't specify. I didn't ask.

I looked at the magnolias instead, at the garden that a man had directed into existence and then visited once a month to confirm its continued presence, and I thought about what it meant to build something primarily to prove you could, to make something last when you yourself would not.

Whether that was legacy or just a very expensive way of refusing to accept impermanence.

My grandfather had been different. He'd built small, careful things, a relationship with his granddaughter, a collection of books with specific dedications, a flash drive pressed into a palm with specific instructions.

Things that required a recipient. Things that were only legible to someone who knew where to look.

I had not opened the flash drive yet.

I was aware of this in the way you were aware of something you were avoiding, not consciously, not with the full weight of attention, but with the peripheral awareness of something present in your field that you kept choosing not to look at directly.

"The only good thing he did," Dominic said quietly, "was the garden."

I turned.

He was looking at the trees, not at me, and he'd said it the way you said things you'd thought for a long time and had stopped feeling the need to qualify, not bitterly, not sadly, just with the flatness of a conclusion reached and set down.

He was not performing complexity for my benefit.

He was simply telling me something true, the way he'd agreed to.

I looked at the magnolias. At the garden that was the only good thing a man had done.

The trees were beautiful. They had nothing to do with whether the man who planted them deserved to be remembered well. They were simply there, large and old and continuing to bloom, indifferent to the biography of their origin.

I thought about the version of Dominic Moreau I'd arrived here with, the idea of him I'd constructed from the chair in my father's living room, from the clean suit and the low voice and the fact of the choice he'd made.

I had built him into something comprehensible.

A type. A category of person whose behavior followed a legible pattern and whose motivations, however unwelcome, were at least manageable once you'd understood them.

I could not fit this version, the man in shirtsleeves on a garden bench before dawn, saying the only good thing he did was the garden, into that category.

This required a new one. I didn't have one ready.

The sky turned. The first real light came, the sun not yet visible but present in the quality of the air, the way the colors of the garden began to be legible, the deep green of the leaves, the white of the blooms on the nearest tree, the gray of the stone, the brown of the earth.

"I should go back in," I said.

He looked over. "You should sleep."

"Maybe."

I stood. He didn't. He was going to stay here, I understood, going to sit with the garden in the growing light the way he probably did on other mornings, or at least the mornings when the thing keeping him awake made the house feel too small to contain it.

"Dominic," I said.

He looked up.

I didn't know what I'd meant to say. Something that acknowledged this, maybe, this thirty-minute interval of being two people in a garden rather than two parties to an arrangement. Something that noted it without making it into something it wasn't.

"Thank you," I said. "For the forty-eight hours. Next time."

The corner of his mouth moved. "I'll manage it."

I went inside.

Back in my room, I sat at the desk with the lamp on and the window dark behind me, and I looked at the inner pocket of my bag. Empty now. I had moved the flash drive days ago.

I had moved the flash drive the night after the dinner conversation, taken it from the bag lining, found a better place.

Then moved it again, two days later, to somewhere more deliberate: inside the spine of a book on my shelf, the one I'd brought from home, slid behind the rear endpaper where it sat flush and invisible unless you knew to look.

I took it out now.

It was so small. A thing you could close your hand around and forget you were holding. My grandfather had pressed it into my palm with the weight of something much larger, and I had carried it that way ever since, with that borrowed weight, that sense of significant cargo.

Only open it if you need real protection. The kind that matters.

I plugged it into my laptop.

The contents loaded slowly, the drive was old, the files numerous enough to suggest it had been filled deliberately, over time, with accumulated purpose.

I looked at the folder structure first: dates, mostly, spanning fifteen years.

Individual files within each folder, named with combinations of numbers and initials that meant nothing to me yet.

The earliest date was 2009. Not 2000, not 2001, not the year Thomas Reyes had been prosecuted.

Someone had built this archive years later, after the fact, reconstructing what the prosecution had abandoned.

I opened the earliest folder. 2009.

Three files. Two were image files, photographs, I found when I opened them, scanned from physical prints by the look of the quality.

The first showed two men standing outside a building I didn't recognize, a brick facade, nighttime.

The second showed a document, handwritten, too small to read at this resolution.

I enlarged it.

A name, at the top. A date. An address in New Orleans.

And below it, in the careful handwriting of a man making a record he wanted to survive him:

Payment received. J. Moreau.

I stared at it.

J. Moreau.

The folder contained fifteen years of files.

Fifteen years of whatever my grandfather had been collecting, whatever he had needed to protect, whatever he had believed was important enough to press into the hands of his granddaughter with instructions to use it only when the protection was real and necessary.

And it began with the name Moreau.

I closed the folder.

I sat very still for a moment, looking at the screen.

Then I unplugged the flash drive and held it in both hands, and I noticed, with the detached clarity of someone observing themselves from a slight distance, that my hands were not steady.

They were trembling. A small, controlled tremor, the kind that happened when the body received information the mind hadn't yet fully processed. Not fear, exactly. The precursor to it. The moment before you understood what you were afraid of.

I put the flash drive back in the book.

Put the book back on the shelf.

Went to the window and looked out at the garden, where the light was fully up now and the magnolias were white and green and real, planted by a man who had done very little good, outlasting him by decades.

J. Moreau.

J. Moreau. I stood at the window for a long time. Whoever had written that was dead, or gone, or something worse. The man downstairs had their book.
