Enzo

The harsh, artificial glare of the laptop screen illuminates the peeling plaster of the safehouse walls, casting long, distorted shadows across the cramped living space.

I sit at the battered wooden table, the stolen hard drive connected to my encrypted terminal through a chaotic web of wires.

The acrid scent of gunpowder and the distinct, musky perfume of sex still cling to my skin, a combination that temporarily distracts my brain from the task at hand.

I force my focus back to the scrolling lines of code, my fingers flying across the keys with a precision that leaves no room for error.

Massimo’s biometric bypass protocols are surprisingly sophisticated for a corrupt Capo hiding in a corrugated metal warehouse, but they are no match for the encryption crackers I brought from the States.

I input the twelve-digit alphanumeric keys we extracted from the sweating, bleeding manager, watching as the secure gateway to Roberto Severato’s offshore empire cracks open like a fractured safe.

The digital ledgers materialize on my screen, revealing a sprawling network of Cayman Island shell accounts and dummy corporations designed to hide millions of Euros.

I initiate the routing sequence, directing the entirety of Roberto’s hidden wealth into the untraceable, blind trust Elena established hours prior.

I watch the progress bar fill, my jaw clenching as the massive balances in Roberto’s accounts plummet rapidly from eight figures down to zero.

The Volkov attack in Boston is officially bankrupt. The pipeline is severed.

My encrypted satellite phone vibrates against the scarred surface of the table, the screen flashing a restricted caller ID. I swipe to accept the connection, bringing the device to my ear.

"The transfer went through," I state, skipping the formalities.

Alessio’s rough, breathless voice crackles through the speaker, accompanied by the distant, chaotic wail of emergency sirens and the sporadic pop of gunfire echoing across the Boston harbor.

"I see it on my end, brother. The Volkov lieutenants just realized their payroll vanished into thin air.

You should see the panic spreading through their ranks.

They are pulling back from the eastern loading bays right now, abandoning the shipment containers they spent the last three days trying to steal. "

"Do not let them retreat gracefully, Alessio," I say.

"They came into our city expecting an easy slaughter.

Now they are disorganized and broke. Box them into the northern shipping lanes and crush them.

Leave the bodies where the local syndicates can find them.

We need to send a very clear message that the Severato family is not a wounded animal waiting to be put down. "

"The boys are already maneuvering," Alessio replies, a grim satisfaction lacing his words.

"We secured the main docks, and the Russians are bleeding out in the streets.

We have the advantage here now. The immediate threat to the homeland is neutralized, which means you have the green light to focus entirely on dismantling that treacherous fuck Vitiello and whoever is stupid enough to stand beside him in Palermo. "

"I will handle Sicily," I promise, my eyes drifting away from the glowing monitors toward the partially open door of the bedroom.

"Keep the territory locked down, and tell the others to stay off the standard communication grids.

Vitiello has ears everywhere on this island, and we cannot afford a leaked transmission right now. "

"Understood," Alessio says. He pauses for a fraction of a second, the tone of his voice shifting from a military commander to a probing brother. "Are you holding up over there, Enzo? You are running this operation blind in hostile territory. If you need me to send a cleanup crew to your location—"

"I have exactly what I need," I interrupt smoothly, cutting off his offer before he can insist. "I will contact you when the next phase begins. Stay alive, Alessio."

I terminate the call, tossing the phone onto the table next to the empty glass of whiskey I poured an hour ago. The safehouse descends into stillness, the ambient noise of the distant Palermo streets completely erased by the reinforced walls.

I lean back in the creaking wooden chair, resting my hands on my thighs, and allow my gaze to drift back to the bedroom door.

Elena is sleeping, her slender form tangled in the pristine white sheets we destroyed earlier tonight.

From this angle, I can see the slope of her bare shoulder, the pale expanse of her skin marked by the faint, bruising indentations of my fingers.

I stare at her, my mind trying to catalog the evening's events and to place her in a neat, manageable category.

I am a man who survives by controlling variables, calculating odds, and anticipating the microscopic flaws in my enemies' strategies.

I am the Consigliere. The polished, Harvard-educated shield who handles the legitimate business while hiding the monstrous realities of my past beneath perfectly tailored Italian suits.

I was not raised with silver spoons or polite society.

I clawed my way out of the gutters, fighting for scraps in blood-soaked alleyways, taking the hits and the abuse because survival required a terrifying endurance.

I learned early that displaying weakness invites slaughter.

My adoptive brothers possess a natural, effortless charm.

They know how to smile, how to woo women with pretty words and expensive gifts, treating romance like an entertaining game.

I do not play games. I am infinitely more cruel, more sly, and vastly more dangerous.

Because of that inherent darkness, I never lose control. I do not let women close enough to complicate my strategy. I fuck them, and I leave before the sun rises, ensuring my territory remains uncompromised.

Yet, I am sitting in the murky gloom of a safehouse, my chest tight, completely unable to pull my eyes away from the niece of my enemy.

She is a variable I did not calculate. When I watched her stand in the center of that mezzanine, pressing the barrel of her gun against Massimo’s sweating forehead, I felt a violent, possessive pride tear through my chest. She did not hesitate to pull the trigger.

She did not shrink away from the blood or the screaming.

She matches the twisted, damaged parts of my soul, looking at my scarred hands not with pity, but with comprehension.

When I backed her against the wall in the hallway, demanding her surrender, I fully expected her to fight me.

I expected the proud mafia princess to guard her independence fiercely.

Instead, she offered me the one thing I never knew I craved, her willing submission.

The memory of her shattering around me, her fingernails biting into the ruined skin of my back, sends a fresh jolt of possessive fire straight to my core.

I run a hand over my jaw, the rough stubble scratching against my palm, frustrated by my own mind.

Why can’t I ignore her? Why am I cataloging the exact shade of her dark hair spilling across the pillow, rather than reviewing the secondary extraction routes?

I catch myself trying to figure her out, attempting to dismantle the layers of armor she wears, desperately wanting to know what makes her tick.

It is a dangerous obsession, a staggering vulnerability that I cannot afford while a war rages outside these walls.

But as I watch the slow, rhythmic rise and fall of her breathing, I realize I have no intention of walking away from her.

A sudden, obnoxious chiming from the laptop severs my thoughts, dragging my attention violently back to the glowing monitors.

The encrypted communication scanner I left running in the background flashes with a frantic red warning banner, indicating a massive data burst across the local Sicilian underworld channels.

I slide my chair closer to the desk, my posture instantly straightening into a rigid line of defensive anticipation.

I tap the keyboard, launching the decryption software to intercept the incoming broadcast.

The message is originating directly from the primary Vitiello compound in the hills of Palermo, authorized by the Don himself. It is bypassing the standard Capo network, broadcasting openly to every freelancer, rogue mercenary, and rival family operating within a five-hundred-mile radius.

I watch the translation scroll across the screen, the Sicilian dialect converting into English text, and a freezing current of murderous rage floods my veins.

It is a bounty.

The broadcast declares Elena a traitor to the bloodline, stripping her of her surname and her protections under the syndicate laws. But it is the number flashing at the bottom of the screen that makes my hands curl into tight, white-knuckled fists.

Twenty million Euros.

Twenty million Euros for the confirmed corpse of Elena Vitiello.

The Don is desperate. He knows we crippled his financial backing by draining Roberto’s offshore accounts, and he realizes that if Elena survives long enough to expose his treason to the remaining loyalists, his coup will collapse from the inside.

He is utilizing his remaining legitimate funds to turn the entire island into a hunting ground.

Every desperate street soldier, every opportunistic assassin, and every greedy civilian with a firearm will be looking for the woman sleeping in the next room.

Vitiello vastly underestimates the caliber of the man standing beside his niece. I am going to dismantle the men trying to collect the bounty, turning their corpses into a very public warning before I personally march up the steps of the Vitiello estate.

"You are projecting an awful lot of murder into the room for someone who just successfully bankrupted an empire."

The smooth, sleep-husky voice drifts from the doorway.

I pivot in the chair, my eyes locking onto Elena.

She stands leaning against the doorframe an oversized dress shirt.

The top buttons undone to reveal the subtle, maddening curve of her collarbone.

Her dark hair is a beautiful, tangled mess, and her eyes are alert, scanning my rigid posture and the glowing red warning banners illuminating the computer monitors. She does not look frightened.

"I apologize if my plotting disturbed your rest," I purr which effectively masks the violent calculations running through my brain. I stand up from the desk, closing the distance between us with slow strides until I am standing just inches away from her.

"I sleep lightly," Elena remarks, tilting her head back to meet my gaze. She studies the hard lines of my face. "Your brother must have called. You look satisfied about Boston. So, what is flashing on the screen that makes you look like you want to burn Palermo to the ground?"

I reach out, my fingers brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her face, tracing the delicate line of her jaw.

"Your uncle just authorized a mass broadcast across the local underworld frequencies.

He realized we severed his offshore pipeline, and he is panicking.

He placed a public bounty on your head."

Elena does not flinch. She does not gasp or step back in horror. A slow, chilling smirk curves the corners of her mouth, a display of unbothered arrogance that makes my blood run impossibly hot.

"How much am I worth, Consigliere?" she asks, her tone dripping with genuine curiosity rather than fear.

"Twenty million Euros," I answer, my thumb stroking the pulse point at the base of her throat.

"Only twenty?" Elena scoffs softly, shaking her head with a mock disappointment that borders on insanity. "My uncle is getting stingy in his old age. He should know it will cost significantly more than that to put me in the ground."

I wrap my hand around the back of her neck, my fingers tangling in her hair, and pull her flush against my chest. She crashes into me, her hands gripping the fabric of my dark shirt, her eyes blazing with a defiant fire that dares the world to try and take her down.

"Let them come for the money," I murmur, lowering my mouth until my lips are brushing against hers.

"I need target practice anyway, and I plan on building a mountain of bodies so high your uncle can see it from his balcony.

No one touches what belongs to me, Elena.

Not for twenty million. Not for all the gold in Sicily. "
