33. Enzo
Enzo
The entire top floor of the Massachusetts General Hospital maternity wing resembles a fortified military compound rather than a clinical medical facility.
Giancarlo guards the primary elevator banks with a customized assault rifle resting across his broad chest, coordinating a dozen of our most ruthless operators who currently block every conceivable entrance and exit.
Niccolò and Alessio commandeered the sprawling luxury waiting area at the end of the corridor hours ago, dismissing the hospital administrators and turning the space into a makeshift command center.
We did not ask for permission to lock down the floor, we simply paid the board of directors a staggering sum of untraceable cash and informed them that the Severato syndicate was taking over the premises until my wife delivered our child.
I pace the length of the sterile hallway, my boots scraping against the polished linoleum in a frantic, ceaseless circuit that betrays the suffocating anxiety clawing at my throat.
I shed my bespoke suit jacket hours ago, my dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar and the sleeves rolled up past my elbows, exposing the map of ink branding my forearms.
This is the one battlefield where my guns are utterly useless.
I can bankrupt rival cartels, dismantle international smuggling rings, and put a bullet through the skull of an enemy from a thousand yards away, but I cannot alleviate the excruciating agony radiating from the woman laboring in the room down the hall.
Alessio steps out of the waiting area, holding two foam cups of atrocious hospital coffee, his dark eyes tracking my frantic pacing with a mixture of amusement and brotherly concern. He shoves one of the cups toward my chest, forcing me to halt my endless march.
"Drink the fucking coffee, Enzo, before you wear a trench into the concrete and collapse from exhaustion," Alessio commands, leaning his massive frame against the pristine white wall. "Caterina and Livia are inside the suite with her right now, managing the doctors and ensuring she remains comfortable. You pacing out here like a caged animal is not speeding up the biological process, trust me, I’ve been here, it doesn’t help. "
"I should be in there with her," I grate out, taking the flimsy cup but refusing to drink the scalding liquid.
"She has been in labor for fourteen hours, Alessio.
Fourteen hours of unimaginable pain, and the obstetrician keeps telling me this is a normal progression.
I am half a second away from dragging that doctor into the corridor and explaining the fatal consequences of his incompetence. "
Niccolò emerges from the waiting room, adjusting the cuffs of his immaculate dress shirt. He claps a hand on my shoulder.
"The medical staff is performing their duties with exemplary precision because they know failing you means ending up in a shallow grave," Niccolò assures me.
"Elena is a woman who survived assassinations and purged a syndicate.
She possesses a spine forged from titanium, brother.
She will conquer this room just as flawlessly as she conquered Palermo.
You just need to possess the patience to let her fight the battle. "
Before I can offer a scathing retort regarding my depleted reserves of patience, the heavy oak door of the VIP maternity suite swings open. Caterina steps into the hallway, her emerald silk blouse slightly wrinkled, a triumphant, exhausted smile curving her painted lips.
"The doctor needs you in the room, Enzo," Caterina announces, gesturing toward the open doorway. "It is time."
I abandon the foam cup on a nearby medical cart, ignoring the splashing liquid, and sprint across the corridor.
The clinical scent of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol assaults my senses the second I cross the threshold.
The spacious suite is a flurry of organized medical activity, but my gaze instantly locks onto the beautiful, sweating woman occupying the center of the hospital bed.
Elena grips the pristine white sheets, her dark hair plastered to her forehead, her chest heaving as she fights through another agonizing contraction.
She looks feral and magnificent, a warrior queen battling the final throes of childbirth with breathtaking ferocity.
I rush to her side, sliding my calloused hand into hers, letting her crush my fingers with a bone-snapping force.
"I am right here, mia bella," I vow, pressing my lips against her damp temple, brushing the tangled strands of hair away from her flushed skin. "You are doing perfectly. I am right beside you."
"Tell this bastard to get this child out of me before I shoot him," Elena gasps, her dark irises blazing with a homicidal fire as she glares at the trembling obstetrician positioned at the foot of the bed.
"One more push, Signora," the doctor urges, his voice cracking under the terrifying scrutiny of the Boston underworld's most dangerous couple. "You are doing exceptionally well. Just give me one more strong push."
Elena squeezes her eyes shut, a raw scream tearing from her throat as she bears down with every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted frame.
I anchor her, murmuring a continuous stream of praises against her ear, worshiping the resilience of the woman who burned my protective barricades to ash and claimed my soul.
A sudden, piercing cry shatters the clinical atmosphere of the suite.
The sound is a demanding wail of brand-new life that forces the oxygen from my lungs. The obstetrician works with rapid efficiency, clearing the infant's airways before wrapping the thrashing, crying newborn in a soft pink blanket.
"Congratulations," the doctor exhales, visibly sagging with relief as he steps back from the bed. "You have a beautiful, healthy baby girl."
A girl.
The revelation strikes my brain with the force of a devastating, beautiful earthquake, effectively dismantling the final remnants of the toxic Severato legacy in a single, miraculous instant.
The nurse finishes cleaning the infant, placing the tiny, swaddled bundle gently against Elena’s chest.
I stare down at the miraculous creation resting in my wife's arms. The baby possesses a shock of thick, raven hair that perfectly matches her mother's, her miniature fists waving frantically in the air as she protests the sudden transition from the womb into the freezing hospital suite.
Elena looks down at her daughter, tears of joy tracking hot paths through the sweat coating her cheeks.
The fearsome Don of Sicily melts into a weeping, incredibly tender mother, her manicured fingers brushing impossibly softly against the infant's flushed cheek.
"Look at what we made, Enzo," Elena whispers, as she traces the perfect, tiny curve of the baby's ear. "She is flawless."
"She is," I agree, my vision blurring as a treacherous, uncharacteristic moisture floods my own eyes.
I reach out, my large hands trembling as I slide them beneath the pink blanket, and Elena carefully transfers the infant into my hold.
The transition is a terrifying, awe-inspiring maneuver. I draw the baby flush against my chest, securing her tiny head within the crook of my elbow, marveling at the perfection of her delicate features.
She stops crying the moment she settles against my dress shirt, her dark, blinking eyes attempting to focus on my face.
A profound wave of unconditional love crashes through my veins. Looking down at my daughter, I realize the monster I was forged to be has finally, unequivocally found peace.
I do not feel the urge to manipulate, extort, or punish.
I feel an overwhelming, singular desire to construct a fortress of untainted love around this tiny girl, ensuring she never experiences a single day of fear or deprivation.
She will never know the sting of a leather belt or the suffocating terror of isolation.
She will grow up surrounded by formidable aunts who will teach her about the world, and uncles who will gladly burn rival syndicates to the ground if anyone dares to disrespect her.
She will rule the eastern seaboard with the exact same grace her mother wields.
"I have you, principessa," I murmur, pressing a kiss to the crown of her dark hair, inhaling the sweet, powdery scent of my newborn daughter. "I will always have you."
An hour later, the chaotic energy of the delivery subsides into a tranquil, exhausted stillness. The medical staff retreat from the VIP suite, leaving us alone in the pristine room while my men maintain the impenetrable perimeter outside the doors.
Elena lies in the center of the hospital bed, the harsh fluorescent overheads dimmed to a soothing, amber glow.
She is fast asleep, her breathing even and relaxed, succumbing to the monumental physical toll of bringing our child into the world.
Even in her exhaustion, stripped of her designer suits and her weapons, she remains the most breathtaking woman I have ever encountered.
I sit in the oversized leather armchair positioned directly beside her mattress, my suit jacket discarded and my tie long gone. Our daughter sleeps securely in the crook of my arm, swaddled tightly in her pink blankets, her tiny chest rising and falling in perfect synchronization with her mother's.
I watch Elena sleep, my thumb absentmindedly stroking the soft fabric covering my daughter's back.
My mind retraces the violent, beautiful journey that brought us to this hospital room. Elena did not just save my life, she was the brilliant architect of my salvation.
She stripped away the corporate shield I utilized to distance myself from the syndicate's brutality, demanding I unleash the darkness to protect our throne.
She handed me the deed to my own soul, trusting me to guard her empire and her heart with equal ferocity.
She gave me a reason to step out of the shadows, transforming the detached, cynical Consigliere into a devoted husband and a protective father.
Niccolò pushes the heavy oak door open a few inches, stepping quietly into the suite.
He is not alone. Livia slips in right beside him, she is holding the tiny hand of their two-year-old daughter, Elettra, who possesses her father's eyes and is already observing the world with a formidable intelligence.
Right behind the Don, the towering, imposing frame of Alessio appears.
The Underboss steps with an uncharacteristic softness, taking immense care not to disturb the silence.
Caterina walks at his side, her grace entirely intact even at this hour of the morning.
Cradled securely against Alessio’s heavily tattooed chest, fast asleep in a yellow blanket, is their six-month-old daughter, Bianca.
They form a tight, protective semicircle around my leather armchair. This is the epicenter of the Boston underworld, the most lethal, ruthless syndicate leaders on the eastern seaboard, and right now, they are just a family marveling at a miracle.
"Giancarlo secured the subterranean parking garage, and I finalized the shift rotations for the perimeter guards before coming up," Alessio informs me in a hushed, rumbling whisper, keeping his voice carefully pitched so he does not wake Elena.
Niccolò nods in agreement, but his features are softened by brotherly pride. "The entire building is locked down, Enzo. Nobody gets on or off this floor without my explicit authorization."
"Thank you," I reply, my voice a rough, grateful scrape.
Livia leans down, gently scooping Elettra into her arms so the toddler can see over the armrest of my chair. Caterina steps closer, resting her hand on Alessio’s shoulder as they all peer down at the tiny, swaddled newborn sleeping securely against my chest.
"She is beautiful, Enzo," Livia whispers, her brown eyes shining with unshed tears. "She is absolutely perfect."
"Look at us," Alessio murmurs with wicked amusement vibrating in his chest as he looks from Elettra, to Bianca, and finally to my newborn daughter. "The three most dangerous men in New England, and we are completely outnumbered. We are raising a goddamn matriarchy."
Caterina offers a soft, triumphant smirk, brushing a kiss against Alessio’s scarred jaw. "You are raising the queens who will one day rule the world you conquered. You should be terrified."
"I am," Alessio admits without a fraction of shame, adjusting his hold on Bianca. "I am going to have to shoot every boy in Boston by the time she turns fifteen."
Niccolò’s dark eyes meet mine, sharing an understanding of the monumental victory we achieved today.
I look at the two men standing in front of me.
We do not share a single drop of blood. For years, I believed that lack of blood meant I was destined to remain on the periphery, a permanent outsider acting as their legal shield.
But looking at the fierce loyalty in their faces, I realize that DNA is entirely irrelevant. The trauma we survived forged a bond thicker and far more indestructible than any biological tie. They are my brothers. This is my family.
"You broke the cycle, brother," Niccolò murmurs, reaching out. His calloused finger gently brushes my infant's tiny, waving fist. "You have everything now."
"I do," I agree. I look from the sleeping daughter in my arms to the brilliant woman resting in the hospital bed just a few feet away. "I possess the entire world."
"Let them sleep," Livia whispers affectionately, patting Niccolò’s arm. "We will be right down the hall, Enzo."
Niccolò claps my shoulder once before he turns. Alessio offers me a final nod, and the two couples quietly exit the suite, the oak door clicking shut behind them to seal us back into our private sanctuary.
I settle back into the leather armchair, shifting my daughter slightly to ensure she remains comfortable against my chest. Outside the reinforced windows, the sun begins to rise over the skyline.
I press a soft kiss to the crown of my baby's head.
What a wonderful day it is.
