Chapter 9
NINE
JADE
The humid morning air seemed to carry the weight of last night's encounter as Jade walked beside Brenn and Talia toward the training grounds.
Her skin still burned with phantom heat from Raikar's touch, and the strange ache in her chest had persisted through a sleepless night.
Every nerve ending felt hyperaware, as if his kiss had awakened something primal within her that refused to quiet.
Focus, she commanded herself, adjusting her training clothes. You're here to learn, not to pine after your impossibly attractive boss who kisses like he could consume your soul.
The kiss itself hadn't been disastrous—quite the opposite. It had been the most intense, wild, perfect kiss of her life, igniting a hunger she'd never experienced. But the fact that it was with her superior made it completely inappropriate, no matter how her traitorous body responded to the memory.
"General Raikar informed me this morning that you requested training against our panther forms," Talia announced, her tone carrying its usual edge of skepticism.
Jade's steps faltered slightly. He'd remembered. More than that, he'd actually followed through on her request, which sent an unexpected warmth spreading through her chest despite her resolve to maintain professional distance.
"Yes," Jade replied, lifting her chin with determination. "If I'm going to be here for a while helping with patrols and missions, I should know how to handle any threat—including panthers."
Brenn's warm green eyes lit up with admiration. "That's incredibly brave. Most humans would be terrified of facing one of us in shifted form."
"She's either brave or foolish," Talia muttered, but Jade caught the hint of respect flickering in her green gaze. "We'll see which one soon enough."
The training grounds buzzed with activity as other warriors went through their morning routines. The humid air wrapped around them like a living thing, carrying the scents of jungle flowers and something wild that spoke to a part of Jade she was still discovering.
This feels right, she realized with surprise. Like I was always meant to be here.
"I'll shift first," Talia continued, rolling her shoulders with predatory grace. "Brenn will stay human and demonstrate the defensive and offensive techniques. Then you'll replicate what you see."
Jade nodded, her pulse quickening with anticipation rather than fear. She'd never faced anything like this—had never imagined she'd be preparing to fight a panther. But something deep in her bones hummed with readiness, as if this challenge was exactly what she'd been waiting for.
Talia stepped back and removed her clothes without ceremony, her athletic frame tensing with controlled power. "Try not to embarrass yourself, Earth girl."
Then she shifted.
The transformation was breathtaking and terrifying in equal measure.
Talia's human form dissolved into flowing muscle and midnight fur, her unique copper striping catching the alien sunlight.
Where a woman had stood moments before, now crouched a magnificent panther—sleek, deadly, and absolutely stunning.
Jade's heart thundered against her ribs, but not with fear. With exhilaration.
"Beautiful," she breathed, earning a surprised look from Brenn.
"Most people say 'terrifying' first," Brenn observed with a small smile.
"She is that too." Jade's brown eyes tracked every ripple of muscle as Talia's panther prowled in a circle. "But the power, the grace—it's incredible."
Brenn moved closer to her sister's shifted form, her movements fluid and confident. "Watch carefully. These techniques were developed by General Raikar himself, refined through years of combat experience."
Of course they were. Even here, even now, everything circled back to the man who'd branded her with his kiss.
Brenn demonstrated a series of defensive maneuvers—how to read a panther's attack patterns, how to use their momentum against them, how to strike at vulnerable points without getting close enough to be mauled.
Talia's panther cooperated with practiced ease, their movements a deadly dance that spoke of countless hours of training together.
"Your turn," Brenn called, stepping back.
Jade approached Talia's panther form with measured steps, her mind cataloging every detail. The way the powerful hindquarters coiled before a spring. The slight shift of weight that telegraphed direction. The intelligent gleam in those bright green eyes that promised this wouldn't be easy.
Good, Jade thought with fierce satisfaction. I don't want easy.
The first lunge came faster than expected, but Jade was ready.
Years of martial arts training kicked in as she sidestepped, using the panther's momentum to deflect rather than absorb the impact.
But Talia was far more aggressive with Jade than she'd been with Brenn, pressing the attack with relentless intensity.
She's testing me, Jade realized as she ducked under a swipe of claws. Trying to see if the human will break under pressure.
Instead of intimidation, the challenge sparked something fierce and primal in Jade's chest. She countered the next attack with a precisely placed strike to Talia's shoulder—not hard enough to cause real damage, but firm enough to demonstrate her capability.
The panther's eyes widened with surprise before narrowing with what looked suspiciously like approval.
They moved together in a deadly ballet, predator and prey roles shifting with each exchange. Jade's training served her well, her disciplined approach contrasting sharply with Talia's instinctive aggression. Where the panther relied on overwhelming force, Jade used strategy and precision.
A familiar presence at the edge of the training ground made her skin prickle with awareness.
Without breaking her defensive stance, she caught sight of Raikar watching from a distance, his intense blue eyes focused entirely on her performance.
Something in his expression—pride mixed with hunger—sent heat flooding through her veins.
Why is he always around when he claims to be too busy to train me himself?
The answer whispered through her mind with uncomfortable clarity. Maybe he'd never been too busy. Maybe he simply didn't trust himself to be that close to her without crossing the same line they'd obliterated last night.
The thought was both thrilling and terrifying.
Talia's panther made one final lunge, and Jade executed a perfect counter that left the great cat off-balance and exposed. For a heartbeat, they stared at each other—woman and panther, human and predator—before Talia shifted back to her human form.
"Well," Talia said, quickly pulling on her clothes, "you didn't die horribly. That's something."
Coming from Talia, it was practically glowing praise.
"Your technique is solid," she continued with grudging respect. "You adapt quickly and don't panic under pressure. Those are rare qualities, even among shifters."
Warmth bloomed in Jade's chest at the unexpected compliment. "Thank you. That means a lot coming from you."
Brenn beamed with pride. "You were amazing! The way you read Talia's movements and adjusted your strategy—it was like watching poetry in motion."
"We have duties to attend to," Talia announced, but her tone lacked its usual sharp edge. "Will you be alright on your own for a while?"
Jade glanced toward where Raikar had been standing, but he'd already disappeared.
"I think I'll explore a bit," Jade said. "Get familiar with the territory."
"Just stay within the marked boundaries," Brenn warned. "The jungle can be dangerous for someone unfamiliar with its inhabitants."
As the twins headed back toward the command center, Jade remained in the training grounds, her body still humming with adrenaline and something deeper. She'd just faced down a panther and held her own. More than that—she'd thrived.
This is what I've been missing, she realized with startling clarity. Becoming something more than I was.
Soon, the stone pathways wound through the territory like arteries, carrying Jade away from the training grounds and deeper into the heart of Nova Aurora.
Her muscles still hummed with the afterglow of combat, that perfect cocktail of adrenaline and accomplishment coursing through her veins.
She'd actually faced down a panther and emerged victorious.
But beneath the satisfaction of her training success lurked a more dangerous current of awareness. Every breath seemed to carry traces of Raikar beneath her skin.
Focus on the scenery, she commanded herself, forcing her attention to the alien landscape surrounding her. Not on how perfectly you fit against his chest, or how his hands felt tangled in your hair, or—
"Stop it," she muttered aloud, picking up her pace along the winding path.
The purple jungle loomed ahead, its canopy reaching toward the twin suns like grasping fingers.
Something about those deep shadows called to her with an intensity that defied logic.
She'd always been drawn to wild places—the mountains of Wyoming, the remote training grounds where she'd pushed herself to her limits—but this felt different.
Like the jungle itself was singing her name in a frequency only her bones could hear.
You shouldn't go in there alone, the rational part of her mind warned. Brenn specifically said to stay within marked boundaries.
But her feet had already carried her to the edge of the tree line, where civilized stone gave way to rich earth and twisted roots.
The air here felt thicker, charged with an energy that made her skin tingle and her heart race.
Somewhere in the distance, exotic birds called to each other in languages she'd never heard but somehow understood.
Just a few steps, she promised herself. Just to see.
