Chapter 19
NINETEEN
JADE
Jade stirred against the soft moss beneath her as the twin suns rose in the sky, consciousness returning in gentle waves.
Just as her eyes fluttered open, the memory of last night crashed over her—the completion of their bond, the impossible transformation, the hours spent running through the jungle in her panther form with Raikar by her side.
The events of her transformation still felt surreal.
One moment she'd been basking in the aftermath of their bonding, feeling complete in ways she'd never imagined possible, and the next her entire world had shifted, literally.
The heat that had started as a pleasant warmth from their joining had escalated into something urgent and demanding.
Every cell in her body had felt like it was breaking apart and reforming, and for a terrifying moment she'd thought she was dying.
But then Raikar had explained what was happening, his calm authority cutting through her panic.
The way he'd guided her through the shift, his voice steady and reassuring, had transformed her fear into wonder.
When she'd finally stood on four legs instead of two, looking at the world through golden eyes, everything had clicked into place with devastating clarity.
The restlessness that had plagued her entire life, the sense of never quite belonging anywhere, the way this alien world had called to her soul—it all made perfect sense now. She hadn't been a human finding her place among panthers. She'd been a lost panther finally coming home.
She turned her head fully to find Raikar's intense blue gaze already fixed on her, his arm draped possessively across her bare waist.
"Good morning, my beautiful mate," he rumbled, his voice rough with sleep and something deeper—a primal satisfaction that made her heart skip.
"I still can't believe it," she murmured, stretching languidly against him. "All those years, and I never knew."
"Your father had to have been a shifter," Raikar said, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on her shoulder. "The genes were just dormant until the bond activated them. It's rare, but not unheard of."
Jade thought about her birth mother, seventeen and overwhelmed, giving up a baby she couldn't raise. Had she even known what Jade's father was? Had she understood what she was passing on?
"I was already planning on staying here on Nova Aurora," she said, meeting his gaze directly. "But now... this changes everything, doesn't it? I'm not just choosing to be here. This is where I belong."
The possessive gleam in his eyes intensified. "Yes, and you're mine now, Jade. In every way that matters. My mate, my equal, my future queen."
The confidence in his voice sent heat flooding through her. She'd always been independent, always fought against anyone trying to control her, but this felt different. This was partnership, not possession. She was choosing him just as fiercely as he was claiming her.
She sat up and began reaching for her clothes. Raikar remained sprawled on the moss, unabashedly watching her every movement with predatory appreciation.
"Keep looking at me like that and we'll never make it back," she warned, though her tone held no real complaint.
"I'm just memorizing every detail," he said simply. "The way you move now that you know what you are. You're different in the best way possible. More... complete."
She paused in pulling on her shirt, considering his words.
He was right. There was a new confidence flowing through her, a sense of rightness she'd never experienced.
She felt powerful in ways that had nothing to do with her martial arts training and everything to do with finally understanding her true nature.
The thrum of helicopter rotors interrupted her thoughts. Raikar was on his feet instantly, moving with that fluid grace that marked him as a predator. Together, they watched as the aircraft settled on the flat expanse near Lover's Rock.
Veynor emerged from the pilot's seat, his eyes taking in their disheveled appearance with barely concealed amazement. "General. Jade. I'm pleased to see you both survived."
"Did Xylen expect otherwise?" Raikar's voice carried a dangerous edge as he helped Jade into the helicopter.
Veynor's expression darkened slightly. "The councilor was... optimistic about the trial's outcome. He seemed to believe the jungle would solve his political problems."
"His disappointment is noted," Raikar said coldly, settling beside Jade. "We not only survived—we broke the record. Six days instead of the required seven."
Veynor's eyebrows rose in genuine surprise. "Six days? That's... impressive."
"We work well together," Jade said simply, though the understatement made Raikar's mouth twitch with amusement.
As the helicopter lifted off, Veynor glanced back at them. "The clan will be rejoicing soon. Your success proves the strength of your bond beyond any doubt. Xylen can't argue with results like these."
But something in his tone suggested the councilor would find a way to try.
The flight back to Raikar's estate passed quickly, the familiar landscape of the Southern Jungles spreading beneath them. Jade found herself seeing it with new eyes—not as an alien environment she was learning to navigate, but as home. Her territory. The place where she belonged.
Once they'd landed and entered the estate, the reality of their situation began to sink in.
They'd completed the trial, proven their bond, and now they would officially become the leaders of the clan.
The weight of that responsibility should have been daunting, but with Raikar beside her and her panther finally awakened, Jade felt ready for whatever came next.
After they'd showered and eaten, settling into the comfortable rhythm of being back home in Raikar's space—their space now—his communicator chimed. Councilor Xylen's voice filled the room, cold and formal.
"General Veyth. I understand congratulations are in order. The trial was... successfully completed."
The pause before 'successfully' spoke volumes about Xylen's true feelings.
"It was," Raikar replied curtly. "In record time."
"Indeed. Such an achievement calls for celebration. You and your... mate... are expected at my estate tonight. The entire council and clan will be in attendance."
Jade felt her stomach clench with unease. Something about Xylen's tone, the way he'd hesitated before calling her Raikar's mate, set every instinct on high alert.
"We'll be there," Raikar said, though his jaw was tight with tension.
After ending the call, he turned to her, his expression grim. "I'm not sure Xylen is fully accepting this yet."
"Well he better learn to, because I'm not going anywhere," Jade said, her hand finding his.
Jade smoothed the black silk dress she'd chosen for tonight's celebration, the fabric flowing like liquid against her skin as she and Raikar approached Xylen's sprawling estate.
Lanterns cast dancing shadows across the stone pathway, and the sound of laughter and music spilled from the open windows ahead.
The weight of what they'd accomplished—completing the Trial of Shadow in record time—still felt like a dream she might wake from at any moment.
The massive oak doors opened before they reached them, revealing a grand foyer already packed with clan members.
The moment they stepped inside, the room seemed to pause, conversations halting as every pair of eyes turned toward them.
Then the applause began, thunderous and genuine, washing over Jade like a warm wave.
"The legends themselves!" called out an older panther shifter, raising his glass of deep red Sidaii wine. "Six days! Impossible!"
Jade felt her chest tighten as more clan members surged forward, their faces bright with excitement and awe.
The attention made her skin prickle with unease—she'd never been comfortable being the center of focus, preferring to blend into the background and observe.
Through the completed mate bond, she felt Raikar's immediate awareness of her discomfort, his presence steadying her like an anchor in a storm.
His large hand found hers, his fingers intertwining with quiet strength. The simple gesture sent warmth shooting up her arm, grounding her in the moment.
"General Veyth, your mate is everything we hoped for and more," gushed a middle-aged woman with silver-streaked hair. "To think a human could survive what killed so many of our strongest warriors—"
"Jade's strength speaks for itself," Raikar replied smoothly. "The trial tested us both, and we succeeded together."
More congratulations poured over them, each clan member eager to share their amazement at the historic achievement. Jade found herself nodding and smiling, playing the gracious victor while internally cataloging exits and calculating how long she could endure this without needing air.
"Jade!" Brenn's voice pierced through the crowd like a lifeline. The panther shifter bounded toward them, her warm green eyes sparkling with uncontainable joy. "I knew it! I absolutely knew you had something extraordinary in you from the moment we met."
Despite her discomfort, Jade couldn't help but smile at Brenn's enthusiasm. "It wasn't all me. Teamwork with my mate and great partner here made all the difference."
She gestured toward Raikar, who squeezed her hand in acknowledgment.
The secret of her newfound panther nature burned on her tongue—she wanted to share this incredible discovery with Brenn, who'd been nothing but supportive from day one.
But they'd agreed to reveal that particular bombshell another time. Tonight was complicated enough.
"Still," Brenn continued, practically vibrating with excitement, "six days! You broke a record that stood for over two centuries. Talia owes me fifty credits—I bet on you from the start."
Jade laughed, the sound genuine. "Where is Talia anyway?"
