Chapter 6 #2

At one point, when things had started to calm down for the night, a storm rolled through.

Suddenly, half the town was taking up residence inside the Slick & Saddle.

Without August’s help, I would’ve been up shit’s creek without a paddle.

Working side by side with surprising ease, I was forced to admit to myself that he was really good at anticipating my needs—sometimes before I even knew what they were myself.

It was like we’d been doing this for years rather than a couple of hours.

Maybe he was paying attention to more than just my tits after all.

I wasn’t used to relying on anyone, and for the briefest moment I had the strangest thought that I could get used to this.

Miles never took the time to understand me or my needs, and he sure as hell didn’t anticipate a single thing.

Ever. It was always me taking care of him, and even all these years later, there are moments where I wish I could go back in time and shake some sense into my former self.

With the rush finally tapering off and the storm easing outside, the patrons are trickling out and it’s finally quieting down.

I take the opportunity to breathe, but all that does is remind me of the Alpha that’s invaded my space all evening.

His scent hangs heavy around me, and no matter where I turn, there’s no relief.

I have a feeling my favorite toy, dubbed Billy Idol, is going to be working overtime the second I get home.

“Hey, August…” The titter of a feminine voice halfway down the bar pulls my attention away from the drinks I’m pouring. Sneaking a peek at the Alpha, I see he’s wiping off the counter in front of two girls I recognize as the Dalton twins. “Didn’t know you worked here.”

The other twin fluffs her blonde hair, tugging her already low top down a little further. If she’s not careful, her nipples might sneak out to play peekaboo. “Might need to come here more often if we get to see you making this bar a whole lot sexier.”

Disgust has a nasty taste flooding my mouth as I try to tamp down a rush of emotions so strong, I’m not even sure I can name them all.

I risk a full-on look at the man I barely know, catching the way his head tilts and the cocky smirk that quirks his all-too-kissable lips. My stomach takes another nosedive.

“You girls out past your curfew?”

The snort that escapes is loud and impossible to cover up, even with the music blaring through the room. August doesn’t even look my way, his smile warms by a few degrees despite the twins’ pouts.

“You know we’re legal now, August.”

“Maybe you could give us a chance to show you just how grown we are.”

Setting the drinks down in front of whoever just asked for them, my attention is solely on the interaction between the trio. I’m invested despite telling myself I shouldn’t care. August is a grown-ass man. He can fuck whoever he wants, and if the Beta twins are his jam, who am I to judge?

But even though I keep repeating that thought in my head, a strange sort of disappointment becomes a living thing inside my chest.

“You girls think you could handle an Alpha like me?” His voice drops lower, its tone becoming so sensual and smooth that my panties are suddenly damp.

Peering at them as I draw two more beers from the tap, I see the girl closest to me swallow hard.

“I’m sure we could keep up with you. Maybe even show you a thing or two,” the other one boldly declares, her voice catches at the end when her sister shoots her a nervous look.

“You sure about that? I’m not one of those boys I see y’all with ‘round town who barely know how to use their dicks, let alone pleasure a woman. I’m a man that likes to fuck and fuck hard, leaving you so sore you won’t walk straight for a week.

And that’s before I sink my knot so deep you’ll believe you met Jesus. ”

I suck my lips between my teeth as the girls' mouths gape open like fish outta water. They’re in way over their heads with this one. Hopefully, they’re smart enough to realize it.

“I mean…” the brave twin begins, sneaking a look at her sister whose eyes are as wide as saucers.

Nope. Definitely not smart enough.

“That your daddy over there playing pool?” I toss out, relishing the way their heads whip toward the back corner of the room.

“Shit!” one of the twins hisses.

“Let’s get outta here before he sees us. He’ll never let us live this down.”

They link hands and run out the door, heading straight into the rain without looking back.

My grin is probably way too wide for my face, but I can’t help it. That was just too damn entertaining.

“You just saved me from Jake Dalton’s fist. I owe you one.”

Looking up at him beside me, I hand him the two beers. “Maybe I was just saving myself the hassle of breaking up a fight. Though it’s doubtful he heard you telling his young, innocent daughters how you like to fuck.”

“Young? Definitely. Innocent? Hell no. I’ve heard stories about what those two have been doing out at Maynard’s Creek, and there ain’t nothin’ innocent about it.”

My laughter lightens the tension that had pooled in my belly. “Go drop these off at table five, then you can head out. It’s slowed down enough that I should be able to manage on my own. There’s only an hour left to close, anyway.”

He takes the beers, but his eyes remain glued to mine. “Think I’ll just stick around ‘til closing time if that’s alright by you?”

Tell him no, Bennett. Tell him you’ve got this. You’ve done it a million times before.

Instead, my shoulders involuntarily shrug as I hear myself murmuring, “Sure.”

One corner of his lips curves up before he heads off to deliver the drinks while I curse my stupid mouth for not listening to my goddamn brain.

Why the hell did I just do that?
