. . .
Sam’s body stirs next to mine. I feel the exact moment she realizes where she is and her memories from yesterday come flooding back.
Her body stiffens in my hold, her head turning to glance behind her and find me asleep.
She lifts the blanket and scoots her way toward the edge of the bed.
Even though I’m irritated that she's planning to escape, I’m enjoying watching her try.
I keep my arm loose around her waist, and she slides out from my grasp.
In the dark she puts her pants back on and then tiptoes out of the room.
Sitting up, I listen while she struggles and swears unable to unlock the front door.
After a few minutes, I decide to put her out of her misery.
“It's a seal lock. It can only be opened with my thumb and a code only I know.”
Sam whips around, her hand flying to her chest. Her face is pink and I see her chest rising and falling. “You can’t keep me here!”
My arms fold over my chest. “I can actually,” I remind her, enjoying the way her lips curl and she stomps up the stairs to me.
“That’s kidnapping.” Her voice is low, seeping in confusion.
“I’m keeping you safe. We have a lot to talk about. Emotions are high right now. Let's have breakfast and we can talk.”
I take her hand in mine and lead her to the kitchen, helping her into the same seat she occupied last night.
After making some eggs, toast and bacon, I set a plate in front of Sam.
Before I can encourage her to eat, she starts feeding herself like normal.
I watch fascinated as she cleans her entire plate.
“What about Dylan? I told Riley I would get her today.”
My back is to her at the sink while I rinse our dishes. “I talked to Reign. My brother is picking her up and taking her for the day and night. She thinks she’s pretty cool having sleep overs like a big kid. I did tell him we’d call her tonight.”
“Reign helped you?” Her voice is quiet.
“I don’t think he told Riley, but yes. The man understands what it means to want to give our ladies the world,” I explain, my shoulders lifting and falling.
Sam gets up from the table and walks to the living room. Her eyes scan the place and my lips twitch. “Yes, I do have cameras here too.”
She whirls on me, her lips parted. “Why?”
“So when you and Dylan are here and I’m working or gone, I can watch over you.”
“What about the other things on my list? A lot were crossed off that you weren’t around for.” Her voice shakes slightly at the same memories that I have.
“I was at graduation, Sam. You just wouldn’t sit by me.
But yes, I helped your aunt give you the gift for your beach vacation before school started.
I set as many things up as I could for your 21st birthday, just like I did for your 22nd.
Allie told me your top choices for college after things fell through with Minnesota and I sent both schools all your tapes, stats, and anything I could to show them how amazing you are.
I already knew you were getting accepted to Michigan before you told me you were moving.
” I rattle off her list and watch her eyes as they widen, realization sinking in.
“That’s why you weren’t shocked when I said Dylan and I were moving. I thought you’d fight me on it, but you just agreed.” She sighs and rubs her temples.
“Sammy, the college, careers, living logistics, didn’t matter. I’ve loved you since we were kids. I was never letting you go.” With each word, I walk closer to her, my arms wrapping around her and settling her body against mine. Her hands land on my shoulders and her head tips back.
“I don’t know how to feel, Jameson. Part of me is angry that you kept all of this from me.
That you manipulated parts of my life. There's so much pain, it feels like a knife has been jammed into my chest. Then the other part wants to let you hold me and forget about the world.” Her eyes fill with tears again.
My thumbs come up, wiping them away before they even get the chance to fall.
Leaning down, I press my lips to hers, softly moving them against hers. “Let me hold you, baby. I’ll make you forget about everything else.”
My hands roam down her back and over her ass, squeezing.
She whimpers right before I lift her against me.
Her arms wrap around my neck and I carry her back to my room.
Laying her down on the bed, I gently remove her pants again, before lowering myself on top of her.
Her eyes deepen to an ocean blue, and she watches as I kiss down her stomach to her hips.
Gripping the edges of her panties, I tear the material down her legs.
She gasps, her back arching. I run a finger down her hot slit, and her body vibrates with need.
“Wet for me already, Pretty Girl?”
Her head shakes, but there’s no denying it when I easily glide two fingers inside, coating them in her juices. “I think you like being at my mercy here.”
“Jameson. I need more.” She rolls her hips, one of her hands landing on top of my head, her fingers gripping my hair.
My mouth drops down to her throbbing clit, licking her firmly.
She moans, and my hands move to the back of her thighs, shoving her legs wide and up toward her shoulders.
My lips close over her pussy, sucking her clit.
She rocks her hips, seeking more friction, but I hold her still with an iron grip.
Using my lips and tongue, I feast on her, flicking and circling until she’s crying out, her body twisting against the mattress, her fingers gripping my sheets until her knuckles turn white.
Even then I don’t let up. My finger slides inside her tight opening, instantly drenched in her sweetness.
Her pussy clamps down on my fingers with each thrust, building more pleasure inside of her, while I continue licking and sucking her like she’s my favorite meal.
When I can feel her inner muscles tighten, her eyes slam closed and another sob rips from her throat.
Sam comes hard, her hips rolling into my hand, riding out the waves of her orgasm as they crest over her.
Her body sags back onto the bed and I slowly remove my fingers, bringing them to my mouth to clean them off.
Her eyes flutter and close. My lips twitch in a smile while I grab the blanket and cover her up.
Sam is deep asleep within seconds. I get dressed for work, checking on her every few minutes.
I feel bad leaving her for a few hours, but I have work to make up from last night.
My feet hit the stairs and I disarm the door, glancing behind me one more time.
No noise comes from my bedroom. Stepping out I turn, lock the door and reactivate the seal lock and alarm.
Things are improving between us, but we aren’t healed yet.
The work day drags by and I spend more time watching the cameras on my phone than anything else.
Sam slept for another hour after I left.
When she woke, the first thing she did was check the door.
I held back a laugh watching her face scrunch in irritation before she stomped back to the kitchen and grabbed a snack.
After that she watched reality television and snacked the majority of the afternoon.
When she realized that I had her phone, I thought she was going to break the tv.
All hell really broke loose. I watched as she surveyed the entire apartment looking for the cameras.
I could hear her cursing my name the entire time.
Her anger and sass did nothing to help her; in fact, I only missed her more, feeling my body respond and grow uncomfortably hard.
When my last customer leaves, I thank Johnny again, dodging his questions about what is going on.
He’s supported my fixation on Sam for years, but even I think he would draw the line at keeping her hostage in my apartment.
The only ones who seem to understand are Luca and Braysen, but only because they helped come up with the idea.
LUCA: Still alive, Kane?
brAYSEN: A hundred bucks says she cut his balls off and fed them to him.
ME: My balls are just fine, Bray.
LUCA: Just blue as fuck.
ME: Anyone have anything useful to say or I’m blocking this chat.
brAYSEN: No, you won’t. You need us to help with your alibi.
LUCA: He’s going to need a place to hide once he lets Sammy out.
ME: I hate both of you.
LUCA: No, you don’t.
No, I didn’t, but I wasn’t in the mood for their shit either.
Pocketing my phone, I help lock down the garage and hit the lights.
When I get to my door, I check my phone one more time to see where Sam is at.
This time she’s on the couch again, a paperback in her hands.
I let myself in and relock the doors. At the top of the stairs, I can watch her easier.
Sam’s eyes peek up at me when I enter, and I lock that door too. “I can’t stay here forever, Kane. Besides the obvious of our daughter needing us, I have hockey and classes to attend. To keep my scholarship, I need to maintain a higher GPA.”
Laughing, I let my eyes roam heatedly over her body.
She was still wearing one of my shirts and now a pair of my basketball shorts as well.
“We’re calling Dylan tonight and she’ll be home tomorrow.
I let your coach know you weren’t feeling the best. As far as your classes, the girls are taking notes for you and fuck worrying about your scholarship.
I have your tuition paid up until the start of next year. You don’t need to worry about it.”
She exhales and her eyes meet mine. “I almost forgot. Do Riley, Emma and Isla know what's going on?”
I hesitate for a split second and she sees it. “They know you’re here. I think Isla knows more, but she also owes me some grace after the Chicago incident where you both put your safety in jeopardy.”
“When will you let me go?”
My hands reach for her face, cradling her cheeks in my palms. “Never, Sammy. You’re mine.”
“Jameson.” Her voice cracks slightly. I shake my head and press my lips to her forehead.
“Let’s eat, Sam. I’m starving and we have a call with our girl coming up. I miss her and I’m sure you do too.” My hands land on her shoulders, steering her toward the kitchen.
We work together pulling out ingredients for fajitas. I chop the veggies while she seasons and cooks the steak and shrimp. Once all the fixings are ready, we sit at the table and eat.
“What was your plan for how this was going to end, for real? You said you were never going to tell me,” she asks, her eyes peering at me over the rim of her glass.
“Yeah, I was never going to say anything. All I was doing was making your dreams come true and making life easier for you and our little girl. I wanted you to be happy and safe. Providing a vehicle that drove well on icy roads, making sure your apartment was close to campus and secure, making sure you never had to worry about paying for the degree you wanted were all things I could do. I wanted to do them, Sam, because I love you. And I’m going to keep doing all of those things. ”
“Are you going to ask if I want those things anymore? I made those goals when I was eighteen, before our lives changed and put certain things into perspective. Does that matter to you at all?” Her little nostrils flare with her attitude, and she stops eating, setting her food down.
I take a deep breath and really think through my next words carefully.
“It does matter, Sam. Every single thing you do or say matters. You want to change colleges? I’ll still pay.
You want to trade up vehicles, let me know and I’ll get the next one.
You don’t want the PWHL or to manage a team someday, okay.
Let’s find what else you like and I’ll be there cheering you on.
You want another baby? I know marriage was on your list first and we did things out of order, but I’ll make it right anyway I can. ”
“You aren’t taking this seriously.” She huffs and downs another drink of her margarita. I laugh and she narrows her eyes at me.
“I’m taking it deathly serious, Sam. I just want you to take everything I’m offering you. Let me keep you safe. Let me give you what you want and need.”
Sam picks up her fajita and starts eating again, ignoring my last comment and desperate plea.
I know she needs time. I’ve waited for her before and I will again.
After dinner, Johnny calls on FaceTime and we talk to Dylan.
I watch my girls as they chat, both of them smiling at the other with almost identical faces.
My heart swells with love for both of them.
My family. After Dylan promises to let Uncle Johnny brush her teeth well tonight, we hang up.
The room feels emptier without her little personality at home. The silence is almost deafening.
“I will never be able to stay mad at you or hate you for the night she was conceived. She’s the best thing in the world,” Sam finally says, her voice quiet but strong as she turns to face me.
“She’s an extension of you. She’s perfect and has held my heart in her tiny hands since she was born. Just like you did when we were nine. What I feel for you is more than love, Sam. I need to see you, feel you, breathe you in order to live.”
Her eyes fall and then she stands from the couch. I’m at a loss tonight on what else to say to show my love for her. My eyes double blink when her hand is suddenly shoved in my face. “I’m tired. We both need to get a good night’s sleep.”
Wordlessly, I take her hand. We turn off the lights in the living area and walk to the bedroom.
She changes into her pajamas, although I’d rather see her always sleeping in one of my shirts.
I change too, and get ready for bed next.
When I’m done, I slide in next to her. Once again, she doesn’t fight against my hold.
Tonight, she sinks into it and we fall asleep.
Once in the night, I wake, finding her chest on top of mine, her body star-fished in all directions.
Suppressing a laugh, I wrap my arm over her back and side, keeping her right where she belongs.
