Chapter 3 #7
His hands continued their slow, mesmerizing path along my spine, the rough pads of his thumbs tracing the deep groove of my back.
The tension in my muscles began to melt under the repetitive, comforting pressure.
The terror of the future seemed to dissolve, replaced by the heavy, intoxicating reality of his touch.
Every sweep of his palms sent a fresh wave of heat down into my pelvis, reawakening the nerve endings that were stretched around him.
"I fought the fever," he explained, his breath warm against my earlobe.
"I offered you the blade. I gave you the choice to strike me down and run to the safety of my sisters.
But you did not take the steel. You offered yourself to me.
You willingly submitted your small, fragile body to the most violent instincts of my kind in order to save my mind. You anchored me."
He shifted his grip, his hands sliding around my waist to pull me even closer, ensuring there was not a millimeter of space between us.
The swollen tie throbbed in response, a deep, shared pulse that connected our bodies on the most intimate level possible.
"That is the greatest gift any female could ever bestow upon a warrior of the rifts," Nartab said, his voice thick with raw emotion.
"Do you truly believe I would take such a profound sacrifice and cast it aside when the morning comes?
Do you think I am a coward who hides behind the excuses of the season? "
I shook my head slightly, unable to find my voice. The sheer devotion in his words was overwhelming. It wrapped around my heart, squeezing tight and chasing away the last lingering shadows of my panic.
"We are mates now," Nartab declared. He stated it as a fundamental law of the mountain, as permanent as the ancient stone beneath our hooves and feet.
"The fever of the summer rut made me rough today.
I claimed you like a feral beast, driven by the fire in my blood.
" He pressed a firm, lingering kiss to the sensitive skin just below my jawline.
"But there will be many more times for us, Veliria.
So many more." A shiver of pure anticipation raced down my spine at his promise.
The ache in my overstretched body suddenly felt like a badge of honor, a physical proof of my new status.
"And the next time I claim you," he continued, his tone dropping into a dark, velvet purr that sent liquid heat pooling in my lower belly, "it will not be against the cold, sandstone of a guard tower.
When the tie finally releases us, I will carry you down to my private chambers in the lower hall.
I will lay you down on a bed piled high with woven wool and imported silks.
I will take my time. I will worship every inch of your beautiful, delicate body until you forget every fear you ever carried from your old world. "
I let out a soft, broken sigh, my head falling back to rest fully against his broad shoulder.
I was melting. The combination of his physical strength, his unwavering nobility, and the deep, possessive cadence of his voice dismantled my defenses.
A swarm of butterflies erupted in my stomach, fluttering wildly as I realized he truly meant every word.
He was not rejecting me. He was claiming me with a fierce, protective pride that I had never experienced in my entire life.
Yet, a small, stubborn knot of logic still clung to the back of my mind, reminding me of the political reality of the canyon.
I turned my head slightly, my cheek resting against the soft amber fur of his jaw.
The scent of pine and crushed cedar enveloped me, strong and familiar.
"But what about the clan, Nartab?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"What about our family? The warlord married my mother.
We were supposed to be stepbrother and stepsister.
The elders will say it is forbidden. They will say a human cannot hold the rank of a warlord's mate without bringing shame to the bloodline. "
"They are no longer my concern," Nartab replied smoothly.
His grip on my waist tightened, a physical manifestation of his authority.
"The title of stepbrother died the moment this knot locked inside you.
You are my mate. That bond supersedes every clan law, every family treaty, and every tradition ever written in the history of these canyons.
" He lifted his head, his gaze sweeping out over the dark expanse of the canyon, surveying his territory as the first stars began to pierce the twilight sky.
"If any male in the clan - whether it be a seasoned warrior, an ancient elder, or even my own father - has a word to say against my choice, they can walk up this mountain trail and say it to my face.
I will meet them at the iron gates. And they will learn exactly what happens when someone dares to question what belongs to me. "
The image of his massive, imposing figure standing at the gates, breaking any challenger who dared to dispute our bond, filled me with an intense, fierce pride.
He was a living wall of muscle, bone, and lethal skill, and he had chosen to stand between me and the rest of the hostile world.
The violence he had displayed earlier was no longer a source of terror; it was the foundation of my safety.
"I will not let anyone disrespect you," he vowed, his hands resuming their slow, hypnotic strokes along my back.
"I will give you a life so sweet and so protected that you will never look back at the ruined planet you left behind.
I will give you everything. Every drop of clear water from the high mountain springs will be yours to drink.
Every sweet fruit harvested from the lower valleys will be yours to eat.
Every piece of gold trade that crosses my borders will be placed in your hands.
" He leaned down again, his voice dropping to a tender, intimate whisper that resonated directly against my collarbone.
"I will lay the entire canyon at your feet, Veliria.
You will rule this peak at my side, and no one will ever cause you to tremble in fear again. "
I closed my eyes, letting the tears of relief finally spill over my lashes and track down my cheeks.
They were tears of profound, overwhelming joy.
Held securely in the arms of the warlord's heir, bound to him by ancient instinct and unbreakable law, I felt a deep peace settle into the very core of my soul.
The heavy, throbbing pressure inside me slowly began to change.
The dense, rigid swelling of the knot softened, the aggressive fullness yielding inch by inch.
As the tie released its grip, Nartab kept his arms securely wrapped around my waist, ensuring my trembling legs did not give out when our bodies finally separated.
The cool mountain air rushed over my heated skin, but I did not feel the chill.
Nartab retrieved his discarded linen cloak from the flagstones and draped it over my shoulders, wrapping me in his scent and his warmth.
Without asking for permission, he slid one massive arm under my knees and the other behind my back, lifting me effortlessly against his broad chest. The sheer ease with which he carried my weight made me feel small, cherished, and incredibly safe.
I rested my head against the steady thud of his heart.
The last sliver of the sun disappeared behind the jagged western cliffs, plunging the canyon into a beautiful, star - filled night.
The wind rustled through the open arches of the tower, singing a quiet song against the stone.
I looked up at the unfamiliar constellations burning in the alien sky, the heat of his body warming my side, and smiled into the darkness.
I had finally found my place in this universe. I was absolutely happy.
