Chapter 21 #2

“The attack on the twelfth was real,” Ryder said.

“Bear’s lockdown was necessary. The second that gate shut, nobody could leave.

I had the photograph, armed brothers, the table, Mia, and a concrete building.

I could have told the truth in that hour.

I said there might be a leak and kept Jess where every one of you could see her.

I put my jacket on her shoulders in front of my wife.

I put her at my right side because that’s the side I hear from.

I asked her about bleeding across a room from Eden.

I copied things out of my marriage and did them to another woman where Eden had to watch. ”

Gage put his head down. He had been at the hospital.

“Smoke and chemicals put Eden on the floor of this building,” Ryder said.

“Her inhaler wasn’t enough. The refill I’d planned for was forty miles away in a car she wasn’t driving.

Leah stayed with her, Aris treated her here, and she went to Terre Haute under escort and woke up asking whether I’d gone back to Jess.

When she came home I put my jacket by Jess again, asked her in front of Eden whether she was bleeding, and kept the baby going.

Jess had told me to stop. Gage had told me to stop.

I had every safe alternative on this property and I chose the lie a second time. ”

Leah’s hand closed over mine and stayed there. She didn’t squeeze anything into it for the room.

Men who had spent a night clearing the ambulance route were hearing that the same man came back from Terre Haute and arranged a chair before I walked through the door. The rescue was the one fact they could have forgiven him with. Ryder removed it himself.

“The gates opened on the seventeenth,” he said.

“Eden refused to give up her house. I kept the affair running from the bunkhouse and repeated the pregnancy to the table. I staged a prenatal trip with an envelope and no clinic and drove Jess past my wife in a convoy. Eden took her ring off in the yard while I stood at the truck. I saw her do it. Jess told me to turn around. I finished the route.” He let that sit.

“She didn’t abandon this club. She stayed, and she forced the whole thing onto the table.

I didn’t confess because honesty got to me.

I confessed because Jess quit, Bear found the records, and Eden took the disclosure away from me.

Any story where I’m a man who frightened his wife once to save her is false. ”

He stopped there. No apology followed and he didn’t ask to address me. He had given me one correct apology on my own porch, and repeating it here would have made it a performance, and he had worked that out without help.

Bear stood. “He used club intelligence, surveillance access, vehicles, personnel, property records, and the possibility of a leak, without authorization. He lied to this table. He put two civilians inside a plan neither could leave. The attacks don’t excuse it.

Silas and the result are not a defense and I won’t hear them offered as one at this table.

” He opened the packet. “Effective today, suspended as Road Captain pending completion of every term. Jax has routes. Ryder holds no authority over civilian movement, family protection, medical transport, or property access.”

Ryder took the patch off the front of his cut.

The stitches didn’t want to come. He borrowed a blade from Bear, cut each thread, and laid the patch on the table without turning it into a sacrifice he could hand me.

He loved that office before he loved me, and watching it come off gave me four seconds of something that went thin immediately, because rank has never once made anybody’s chest close.

I had been keeping a count without deciding to, and it arrived while the threads were coming out.

He had not said one word to me since the recorder went off in Mia’s office.

Plenty to Bear, to Jax, to his lawyer, to forty people in folding chairs, and nothing with my name in it that wanted an answer back.

You don’t hold a total like that unless you’ve been listening for the other kind, and I found that out in a room with forty people in it.

Bear read the permanent changes. No officer creates, hides, or imposes a safety plan for a civilian except during an extraction from present danger.

Anything longer requires the known facts, written options, the person’s chosen advocate, and a recorded acceptance or refusal.

Family creates no authority. Marriage creates none.

“Say the part about counsel,” Wade said.

Bear read it. Independent counsel or an unaffiliated advocate for the civilian, wherever the club’s interest and the person’s could diverge.

“Nineteen years.” Wade got up this time, and it took him a moment.

“Nineteen years and no prosecutor ever got a boot inside this club, because nothing about us was ever written down. Now there’s a lawyer in Terre Haute with our policy in a drawer and a woman who isn’t in this club putting her name over a patched man’s.

I’m not saying he was right. I’m saying you’re not fixing him.

You’re taking the roof off so people can watch us clean. ”

“Sit down, Wade.”

“I am sitting down,” Wade said, and did.
