Devin #3

It took a lot to ignore the voice in her head that sounded an awful lot like her mother.

The one telling her there was no way a man who looked like him would ever want a fat ass like her.

That she was only good for one thing, and she’d already given that up to him, she drowned it out with Jasper’s remembered voice telling her all the ways her rolls and jiggles were sexy to him.

The ride to the clubhouse gave her way too much time to think. Jasper’s words were starting to lose out to her mother’s by the time they finally arrived.

She had the driver drop her at the gate.

If she wanted to be driven all the way to her car, everyone inside would be alerted.

Granted it was still dark, so there wouldn’t be too many members there, but she didn’t want to take the chance that her brother had spent the night with one of the girls there.

The gate would be manned since it wasn’t business hours yet. That was a good thing.

“Hey, Devin. How are you?”

“I’m good, Home. Who all’s here?”

His smile was blinding. He always had an easy-going manner, even when things were going sideways. Home was the opposite of the intensity of most of the guys.

“Not your brother if that’s what you’re asking.” He opened the gate and let her in. As she started what felt like a mile-long trek down the drive to her car, he called back. “I’m fine, by the way. Thanks for asking.”

Devin winced at her rudeness. Home wasn’t ever short with anyone. Always a kind word or asking how things were going. A great listener. He looked like a typical caricature of a biker, but his personality was that of a family therapist.

“Sorry, Home. I’ve got a lot on my mind.” She turned back and stood in front of him. “How are you? Still dating the nurse?” she asked with a smirk.

His eyes went wide as saucers. “We aren’t… I mean… how do you know?”

“Call it woman’s intuition.” By that she meant, Joanie had actually told her and swore her to secrecy.

“Yeah, well. Um, don’t say anything, please. She doesn’t want to mention it yet, and well, I’m not ready for the whole she’s as good as family speech either. Our history predates either of our associations with the club, and—”

Devin threw her hands up, one still clutching Jasper’s shirt. “I’m a vault.” Besides, Joanie had already told her about their history and well, she had no room to speak on secret off-limits situationships.

Home pointed at the shirt she held, and she thrust her hand behind her back.

“If you are, then I’ll be too,” he stated flatly.

With that, she trekked to her car and headed back to her place.

Once there, she showered, changed, grabbed her bag, and headed to the kitchen. Harmon nodded to a thermos of coffee and a breakfast sandwich.

“For your long day at… work?” Devin gave her a sad smile. Harmon knew she was off to do something shady; she just didn’t know exactly what. They’d agreed when she’d started asking questions that she wouldn’t tell her. It was better that way. Plausible deniability.

Considering she was in a throuple situation with two members and was best friends with an ol’ lady, it was the smartest course.

They would expect her loyalty, but Harmon was also a girl’s girl. Her motto was gashes before ’staches. Which was both gross and endearing when she said it.

“I left you a note, in my bedroom. That way it would’ve taken you a bit to notice it after you realized I wasn’t home as usual. It should cover your ass, thanks for not hounding me, I appreciate it.”

She nodded. “Where were you all night? Get lucky?”

Devin couldn’t stop the grin or the blush that took over her face. “I spent the night with Sasquatch.”

Harmon’s jaw dropped comically. “Oh my god. Wait, he let you leave his bed to go on this mission of yours? He seems a bit more chest pounding to me, Devin. You’re mine, that type of guy.”

“A little… but I kinda snuck out and left a note.”

“Devin.” The reproach was evident in her voice.

“Don’t Devin me.”

“It’s different now. When it was just your brother, I understood, but now you have a man. The fucking literal embodiment of Bigfoot at your back and you’re leaving him out of it?”

“He’s not my man,” she mumbled.

“The fuck he’s not. He broke protocol to pin your knees to your ears, he’s your man.”

Devin didn’t have time to argue the point. Thank God Harmon only thought she was going to Nebraska to confront her mom. Devin had to leave the other part off or she would never cover for her.

“I appreciate you, I really do, but it’s not like that. It was one night, I doubt he’s head over heels for me.”

She grabbed the thermos and sandwich and headed toward the door. “Besides, I’m not the type of woman men like him settle down with. It was one night.”

She hated reducing it to that. The first part felt like a truth that was plaguing her and the second tasted bitter. It was so much more than one night for her.

Harmon caught the door before it closed and spoke to her back as she headed toward her car.

“That’s bullshit and you know it. Squatch would never have touched you if it was just one night, they have whores for that.

But keep telling yourself that maybe you’ll believe it.

I’ll be here when you get back holding a bottle of wine and a big ol’ fat I told you so.

Be safe, chica, and call me every step of the way. ”
