Chapter 13
Killian
When Maddox originally asked me about going to the club tonight, I didn’t really have any intention of going.
But I got a text earlier from John, my ex-girlfriend’s younger brother, and I changed my mind.
John reminds me a little bit of my brother, Jeremy, and I’ve always had a soft spot towards him. He said that he knew I was back in town and he heard about how I was working for the King’s, and he wanted to get some advice.
I couldn’t say no to him. He’s young and reckless, and if he’s trying to do the right thing I want to be there for him. His dad has always been a selfish prick, and his mom and Farrah never paid much attention to him.
It doesn’t make a difference to me that I’m not with his sister any longer. John’s a good kid, and if he wants my help, I’ll give it to him.
He told me he was coming here tonight, so I figured, why not? I don’t plan on staying long; just long enough to talk to John, and then I’ll call it a night.
I haven’t even been able to look at Mia all day. Not after last night.
But fuck, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the way she felt in my arms. I know that I shouldn’t have done that, but the way she was whimpering in her sleep broke my heart. She even called out my name at one point. How could I ignore that?
She was scared. I don’t know who hurt her, but someone must have. She acts so tough and unaffected all the time, I think I forget sometimes that underneath that facade there’s a softness to her. She just doesn’t like to show it.
We’re sitting in a booth at the club now. Maddox had his friend reserve a spot in the VIP area for us, so our section is roped off from the public.
Mia looks fucking stunning in her little black dress and those heels, and I can’t keep my eyes off her. Neither can every other guy in here, apparently, and it’s driving me crazy.
She’s quiet tonight, and she said that she wasn’t in the mood to drink, so she’s sipping on a cranberry and sprite right now.
She glances over at me, and I’m about to speak when I hear someone saying my name. I turn to see John, and I stand up from the booth and make my way over to him.
“Thanks so much for meeting me, Killian,” he says, giving me a lopsided grin.
“Of course,” I reply. “How have you been?”
He shrugs, and something seems off about him. I wonder if he’s drunk or on something. Or both.
“Things have been…rough,” he says eventually, and I frown.
I’m about to ask him what’s going on when he says, “Can we talk in Cody’s office? It’s way too loud out here.”
I really don’t want to leave Mia, but our section is safe and secure, so it should be fine.
“Ten minutes,” I tell John, and he nods.
I walk back towards Mia, leaning down close to her.
“I’ll be back in ten minutes,” I tell her. “Do not leave this area.”
She nods, and I sigh.
“Tell me you won’t leave this area, Mia,” I say, and she glares at me.
“I won’t leave this area, Killian,” she replies, and I grin at her.
“Good girl,” I whisper, and she blushes.
Then I leave the VIP section, and I make my way towards Cody’s office with John. I’ll try to give him whatever advice I can, and I’ll be back soon.
Something shifted between us last night, and I don’t think I need to worry about Mia taking off anymore.
Besides, if she even tries to do something as foolish as run, I’ll find her. Though I don’t think she will.
John pushes the door to Cody’s office open, and I’m eager to just get this over with and get back to Mia.
Ten minutes, I tell myself. That’s it.
Ten minutes, and then me and Mia can get the hell out of this club.
It can’t come soon enough.
