Chapter Six #2
“Good. I know it’s been really hard for Lance and Patty to keep up with Hadley’s schedule. Before she started school this year, they could just bring her to the store.”
For a moment, I wasn’t sure who Lance and Patty were, even though Patty had obviously texted me yesterday, but I quickly deduced she was speaking about Aiden’s parents.
“Thank you for coming to my rescue yesterday in the store. I’m not sure what I’ve done to make Nancy dislike me so much. I only just met her Saturday.”
The barista behind the bar called my name. I got up and grabbed my hot chocolate and the warm banana nut bread, then made my way back to Tammy.
“First off, I don’t want you to think I gossip.
” She lifted her brows in thought. “Actually, let me rephrase. I do like a bit of gossip every now and then, but harmless stuff. My daddy’s the preacher at the Methodist church Aiden and his family go to.
I’ve known him since we were in elementary school. ”
I smiled and took a sip of hot chocolate.
“But I do feel like you need a bit of backstory to truly understand Nancy. She and Lisa were best friends. I’m sure you know Lisa was Aiden’s wife who passed away, though I doubt he’s talked to you about her much.”
“Just a few mentions,” I confirmed.
She nodded. “Yeah, he’s been sort of hiding out the last year or so since her passing.
” Tammy lowered her voice. “No one really knows this, so please keep it to yourself…but Lisa and Aiden were having problems in their marriage before she found out she had cancer. It was hard for Aiden to just walk away when Hadley was involved, but they definitely would have gotten a divorce had she not gotten sick.”
My eyes widened in surprise. How did she know all of this?
As if reading my mind, Tammy added, “Aiden and my husband, Dalton, are best friends. He was at our house yesterday.”
“Oh.” That was all I had to say about that part. I wasn’t sure why she felt she had to tell me the backstory, either, so I decided to ask. “Tammy, why are you telling me all of this? What does it have to do with Nancy disliking me?”
She sighed. “Okay. When Nancy found out that Lisa and Aiden were having problems, she tried with everything she had to convince Lisa to leave him. Said he was married to his job, never made time for her and Hadley—which, by the way, wasn’t true.
He loved Lisa at one point, and he’s always been there for Hadley.
Did they have issues? Yes. They married young.
Very young. Lisa got pregnant and her parents basically forced her and Aiden to get married. They did, and she lost the baby.”
I gasped. A familiar feeling of sadness rushed through me. I had to force myself to keep my own memories of the child I had lost at bay.
“They ended up staying married because they thought they were in love. Turns out, they were really just stubborn and didn’t want to admit that maybe they loved each other but weren’t actually in love.
They’d dated all through high school and got married soon after, after all.
Anyway, Lisa never did go to college. She stayed here in Estes Park and worked for Lance and Patty at the store, and her parents never forgave her for what they said was ruining her life by getting pregnant. ”
“Wow.” It was all I could say. This was a lot of very personal information.
“At any rate, they stayed together even though things were rough. They separated once, only to find out Lisa was pregnant again. They ended up having Hadley, and for a bit of time, they seemed happy. They cared for and loved each other enough to try to make it work. Nancy, however, always had a thing for Aiden.”
“Even though her best friend was married to him?”
Tammy nodded. “When Tammy was diagnosed with cancer, it progressed pretty quickly. It only took a few months, poor soul. Nancy was at Aiden’s house all the time. Her husband, Roy, was understanding about it. I mean, it was her best friend. But after Lisa died, well…Nancy kept going over to Aiden’s.
“She was trying really hard to make herself a part of his and Hadley’s life, and Aiden was having none of that. Then he got pretty trashed one night when we were all out, and Nancy came on to him when he had gotten up to use the restroom.”
My mouth gaped before I shut it quickly. “What?”
“Yeah. Luckily my husband decided to check on him and showed up in time. Aiden dealt with a lot of guilt after Lisa died for reasons of his own. Anyway, he didn’t speak to any of his friends for weeks.
He finally started coming back around to our house about four months ago, but then work got crazy.
Sunday night was the first time he’d been over to hang out in a really long time.
It was good for him, so thank you for that. ”
“I didn’t really have anything to do with it, other than watch Hadley. But that’s my job.”
She smiled. “I know I just dumped a lot on you, but I felt like you needed to know about Nancy and why she’s being such a bitch to you. And yes, my granny is probably up there shaking her finger at me and calling me a gossiping whore.”
My hand covered my mouth, and I attempted to hide a smile. Clearing my throat, I replied, “Thank you for letting me know. It makes some of her comments clearer. People don’t really think my position is some cover just to get close to Aiden, do they?”
“Of course, they do. The ones who don’t know Aiden. Then again, it’s time for him to move on and date. Dalton works with Aiden, and he’s been trying to get him to go on a guys’ trip to Vegas. Maybe if he has a one-night stand or something, it’ll help him move past all the guilt he feels.”
Forcing a smile, I took another sip and pushed aside how that statement made me want to scratch my skin. Why did the idea of Aiden being with another woman make me react at all? I hardly knew the man.
“So, now that we’ve gossiped enough about your boss and my husband’s best friend, let’s talk about volunteering at the school.”
My stomach dropped instantly. “Excuse me?”
“Yes! I mean, just because you’re Hadley’s nanny, doesn’t mean you can’t be involved with the other moms at the school. Poor little Hadley doesn’t have anyone to come for Muffins with Mom, or a mother to volunteer to be co-room mom with me.”
“You have a little one in Hadley’s class?” I asked.
“Yep, Jennifer and Hadley are the bestest of friends. Their word, not mine. She wasn’t with me at the grocery store, or I’d have introduced you, but they love having playdates, so you and I are going to get to know each other really well.”
Tammy looked down for a moment, an unsure expression crossing her face before glancing back up at me.
“Full disclosure, Lisa and I didn’t get along so well.
She ran with a different group of friends.
I’m not trying to make her out to be the bad person, so please don’t take it that way.
It’s been hard on all of us, the last couple years, but Aiden and Hadley the most. She was a good mom, but she and Aiden were like oil and water as they grew older.
She didn’t treat him the way she should have, and I always disliked her for that.
But our girls loved each other, so we made it work for their sake. ”
This time, my smile was genuine. “I appreciate you giving me some of the backstory. And I look forward to the playdates. Thank you so much for inviting me this morning, as well. I’ll talk to Aiden and see how he feels about me being more involved in Hadley’s school. I don’t want to cross any lines.”
Leaning back in her chair, Tammy studied me.
“What?” I asked with a nervous chuckle.
“There’s something about you, Emma Middleton, something that I really like. You can honestly tell that you have both of their best interests at heart. Thank you for that.”
I attempted to swallow the lump in my throat. “Well, like I said, it’s my job.”
Tammy shook her head. “No, you could just do the minimum, but you’ve already gone above and beyond.
Dalton texted me right before you got here and said Aiden walked in with a packed lunch today.
The man has never brought a lunch to work before.
It’s the little things that make a difference. I want you to know that.”
I shrugged off her compliment but couldn’t fully ignore the comment about him never bringing lunch to work.
I wondered if Lisa had worked full time and wasn’t able to do small acts of kindness for Aiden.
“Well, if I’m going to be living there and taking care of his daughter, I figure I might as well take care of him as well. ”
Her brow rose, and my cheeks instantly heated.
“I mean food-wise, that’s all. Not like…any other kind of taking care of him. I was already making a lunch for Hadley. I’m not the least bit interested in how hot he is.” I slapped my hand to my forehead and groaned. “No! I mean—wait. Lord, I’m making this worse.”
She laughed, and I let out a nervous bubble of laughter myself. Tammy tilted her head and regarded me, her eyes shining.
“Do you find Aiden attractive? I mean, you did just say he’s hot.”
I blushed further. Of course, the woman would ask me that, after the word vomit I’d just spewed. Not to mention the fact that she was good friends with him.
“I think he’s an attractive man; no woman could deny that. But the last thing I want is a relationship, especially when the previous one nearly killed me.”
Her smiled dropped. “What?”
Lifting my hands, I tried to casually wave off my careless comment.
“Nothing, that came out wrong. Sorry.” Glancing at my watch, I stood quickly.
“I really need to get going. I wanted to swing by the store to meet Mr. and Mrs. Bishop, then head on back to the house to finish getting settled in before picking up Hadley. Thank you again for filling me in on Nancy, and some of the backstory on Aiden and his wife.”
Tammy stared up at me. I could see the concerned expression. “Sure. But you don’t have to rush off, Emma.”
“I have a lot to do. Have a wonderful Monday, and I’ll let you know about the volunteer thing.”
“Wait!” Tammy said, standing and reaching for my arm. “Let me give you my cell number.”
“Oh. Right. That would be great.”
After we exchanged numbers, I turned and practically ran out of Starbucks before she had a chance to stop me again.
