Chapter 48 #2
“I’m sure she will have your personality and your heart. You are special, Colt. Everyone knows that. So will she.” Sabrina smiled at me. “I will teach her all about fashion since you clearly don’t care. I’ve seen some of the outfits you put her in.”
“Gods, Rin, I will not put her in a fluffy pink dress every day just for her to have a blowout and toss it. You will understand, I promise you. It’s just absolutely not worth it right now.”
Selene, Mike, and Laila laughed while Sabrina pouted.
I would be so happy when she and Mike had pups.
They would be fantastic parents, though; I could see Mike ending up being the pushover and Sabrina being the one who brought down the hammer.
Despite it looking like the opposite on the outside.
Laila would too, but she and Peter ended up coming to an agreement that they would wait until they turned fifty.
We finished our tea and food, talking about more mundane things.
Selene was moving her shop a few states over.
She made sure we got the address, but we would probably just be in contact by phone.
Mike and Sabrina had actually settled on an apartment, and Mike looked like he was sucking a lemon while Sabrina talked about it.
It was very cute. He’d taken my advice, and I was glad.
Laila talked about school. She was going into fashion, just taking a couple of courses to see how she felt about it.
Everything was online and she wouldn’t need to go anywhere.
Peter agreed, simply to allow her to find what actually interested her, rather than forcing her back into college.
I was happy to listen, even though my life was up in the air.
“Oh, Colt, they actually have quite a bit built on the house. Since we are paying for an army and rush shipping on everything, the house might be built by the end of this year. Maybe even sooner.”
“You’re kidding.” My jaw dropped as Mike smiled brightly.
He slid his phone across the table, and I picked it up. There were drone photos of the progress. It actually looked like a house. I didn’t expect them to be going this quickly. Looking up, Mike gave me a softer smile.
“You can move into it soon, Colt. No matter how many of you there are. You will be safe.”
I stared down at the land and then up at Selene. She put her hands up. Sabrina laughed.
“Oh no. I know that face. That’s the face of an idea forming. We are so fucked.”
“I have a question, Selene.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I’m sure you have more than just one Colton. Give me a moment to order another pot of tea. I have a feeling we’ll be here for a while.”
I nodded, and the barrier dropped for a moment. The young witch came in, taking all our orders, me changing mine to the blended vanilla almond. After they served us the second round and more desserts than food, the barrier returned.
“Alright, Colt. Shoot.”
“Could you teach someone like me how to channel magic?”
Her eyes narrowed. “Into what? A spell?”
“The ground.”
“The…ground…?” She blinked at me. “I think I need a little more context.”
I pulled out my phone, scrolling through my files before I found a page I had screenshot when I was going through the Archives. Sliding the phone over, her brow furrowed before it shot up in surprise. She looked up at me, blinking rapidly.
“You want…”
I nodded. “Could I?”
“I mean, you would need more magic than just your own. Especially if you wanted to do this soon. It would also depend on the size of the area. There are rules and regulations, but that flies out the window with this…if you can pull it off.”
“Can I?”
Selene hummed, pouring herself another cup and sipping it. “Hypothetically…”
Waiting for her, everyone else was confused, but Mike was getting a kick out of it. He knew my ideas were sometimes wild. I’d tell him eventually. I just needed to know if it could be done.
“Hypothetically…” Selene said, against as she pressed her lips against the rim of the teacup. “I mean, you get enough magic…”
I smiled widely. “Enough magic and…”
“You could…potentially…recreate how they made a lair…but, I mean…” She shook her head. “Colt, this would be crazy. There hasn’t been a new lair created in thousands of years. And I mean thousands. Add in that it’s a wolf doing it? That would be…nuts. ”
“It’s the perfect defense, though. I can’t make a pack with just myself. I can, however, handle a lair myself. It comes with protection not just from the dragons but from the Council themselves.”
Sabrina and Laila gasped, their eyes widening. Mike threw his head back and laughed. Selene was still thinking. Every so often shrugging, but then shaking her head, and then shrugging again.
“I mean, if you have the details about how it’s made, and all you need is magic…there are things to supplement needing more magic. Especially as a celestial witch.”
“How much would it cost?”
She whistled. “A lot. Like…a lot. I don’t even know how long it would take. If you really want to, though…” Selene looked up at me. “I have a request. Outside the money and all that.”
“What request?”
“I want to be able to come into the lair too. Have a small house on the property. I would probably need one anyway to work through creating it, but…I want to stay. Not in the way, just on the edge. A safe place.”
I smirked. “Easy. Done.”
“Just like that?”
“You’re my friend, Selene. You’ve helped me since I got to the city.
Even before then. I know you need safe houses as much as I do.
I’m happy to be one of them. Or even your primary residence.
I don’t care. You will, however, have to deal with my daughter in your house watching you when she gets older. ”
She smiled brightly. “Done. Alright. Well, I guess…I’ll start looking into this. I can’t believe I am, but I will. I’ll contact you when I figure something out.”
Nodding, I smiled. It might not have been the conclusion I was hoping for, but at least there was something to look forward to.
Even if it was just Kayla and me. Leaving her something for the future, the land and an actual lair, seemed like something a dragon father would want to do.
No matter how hard it was. At the very least, I could try.
