Chapter 49 Laynie

Linc and Charlie walked into the apartment while I was sitting on the couch. The T.V. was on, but I wasn’t watching it. It was 4 am but I couldn’t sleep.

“What’s going on?” I asked, jumping up. I noticed blood splattered all over them both.

“We got him,” Charlie said, just above a whisper.

“Got who?” I asked, confused. I looked from her to Linc.

“Alek.” Charlie said.

The instant relief that flooded through me left me on my knees.

Linc came over and lifted me up. “It’s all over, baby. You’re free.”

I couldn’t process that I would ever be free again. That I wouldn’t have to look over my shoulder every minute when I left the apartment. I could go home, I could see my mom. No one would chase me. But a stabbing pang of guilt shot through my chest. Claire. All the other girls. What would happened to them?

“Charlie, go shower in the guest bathroom, and give me your clothes when you’re done.”

I watched Charlie walk away and turned back to Linc. “Thank you.”

“It was all her.” He pointed in Charlie’s direction.

I hugged him around his stomach and pressed my face against his chest. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

I pulled back and looked him in the eyes. ”It”s not over.”

”I know,” he said.
