Chapter 42
Boone
The freeway is silent except for the helicopter blades slowing behind us.
The Architect stands calmly between two armed teams.
And somehow—
He still looks like the man in control.
Wren’s laptop alarms scream in the night.
She stares at the screen.
Frozen.
“Los Angeles,” she whispers again.
River steps closer.
“How far?”
“Downtown infrastructure corridor.”
Adam exhales slowly.
“That’s the command hub.”
Cyclone swears under his breath.
Wren doesn’t say anything.
But Boone sees the way her eyes harden.
Sentinel.
His shadow still hanging over everything.
Boone turns back to the Architect.
“You’re coming with us.”
The man smiles slightly.
“Oh I doubt that.”
Russ raises his rifle.
“You don’t get a vote.”
But Wren is barely listening.
Her hands shake slightly over the keyboard.
“I should have seen it.”
Boone steps beside her.
“What?”
“The signal pattern.”
Her voice tightens.
“He mirrored Sentinel’s architecture but split the authority paths.”
She shakes her head.
“I was so focused on him…”
She gestures toward the captured Architect.
“…I didn’t see the second one moving ahead of us.”
Boone gently lowers the laptop screen.
“Hey.”
She looks up.
“I missed it,” she says quietly.
“People could die because I missed it.”
Boone shakes his head.
“No.”
“You didn’t miss it.”
“You found it.”
“Too late.”
“Not yet.”
Her eyes search his face.
“You really believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because we’re still standing here.”
He takes her hand briefly.
“And because we’re not done yet.”
For a moment—
The panic in her eyes softens.
Just slightly.
Then River steps forward again.
“We don’t have time.”
He gestures toward the helicopter.
“If the real command node is in LA…”
“…we move now.”
Cyclone nods.
“Agreed.”
Raven looks at the captured Architect.
“So what do we do with him?”
The man tilts his head.
“Yes.”
“I’m curious about that as well.”
River steps closer.
His voice is cold.
“You’re staying right here.”
The Architect studies him with interest.
River looks between the teams.
“Alright.”
He starts assigning roles immediately.
“Cyclone, Raven—you stay with the convoy.”
“Lock this guy down.”
Cyclone nods.
“Happy to.”
“Gage,” River continues.
“You’re with Boone.”
“Good.”
“Gideon stays with the vehicles and monitors the cascade.”
“Adam, Russ—you’re with the helicopter.”
Boone glances toward Logan.
“Ready for another flight?”
Logan grins from the cockpit.
“Always.”
Boone looks at Wren.
“You’re coming with us.”
She nods once.
“Of course.”
Because if the system activates—
She’s the only one who might be able to stop it.
The countdown timer flashes again.
0:49:02
Less than an hour.
Boone helps Wren back toward the helicopter.
She looks up at him as they walk.
“You know this is about to get worse.”
“I know.”
“The second Architect could already be inside the control hub.”
“I know.”
“And if they activate Phase Three—”
Boone stops walking.
He gently pulls her closer again.
Just for a second.
“Then we stop them.”
She studies his face.
“You really are impossible.”
“I’ve been told that.”
He leans down and kisses her again.
Quick.
Determined.
The kind of kiss that promises they’re both still walking out of this alive.
Behind them—
Cyclone cuffs the captured Architect, and his men.
Raven secures the convoy vehicles.
River climbs into the helicopter.
Logan powers up the engines again.
The rotor blades begin to spin.
The helicopter lifts into the California night.
Below them—
The freeway grows smaller.
And somewhere ahead—
Los Angeles burns with a thousand lights.
Right where the real Architect is waiting.
The countdown drops again.
0:47:33
Less than an hour before the system activates.
And now—
The race for the city begins.
