Chapter 60 Boone
Boone
Los Angeles looks different from the air.
From thirty thousand feet, the city stretches forever.
Lights.
Freeways.
Neighborhoods.
Millions of lives moving beneath the wings of the jet.
Wren sits beside me, laptop open again.
The glow of the screen reflects in her eyes.
She hasn’t spoken much since we left North Carolina.
Her mind is somewhere inside the system.
Running scenarios.
Planning the shutdown.
I watch her fingers move across the keyboard.
“You’re doing that thing again.”
She glances up.
“What thing?”
“The intense focus thing.”
“That’s not a thing.”
“It’s definitely a thing.”
She smiles faintly.
“I’m mapping the architecture.”
“Still evolving?”
“Yes.”
“That’s not comforting.”
“No.”
The plane begins descending toward the runway.
The city grows larger beneath us.
Skyscrapers cutting through the night.
The same skyline we saved not long ago.
But this time—
We’re here to end the system completely.
The jet touches down smoothly.
Minutes later we step out into the warm California night.
A black SUV waits on the edge of the private terminal.
River leans against the hood.
Cyclone and Gage stand beside him.
Logan sits on the hood scrolling through his phone.
River looks up as we approach.
“Took you long enough.”
Boone grins.
“Miss us?”
Cyclone folds his arms.
“Not particularly.”
Gage shakes Boone’s hand.
“Good to see you again.”
Then he looks at Wren.
“Nice to see the person who saved the city.”
She smiles politely.
“Nice to see the people who helped stop it.”
Blade is leaning against the back door.
“So.”
“What’s the mission this time?”
Wren answers calmly.
“We dismantle Sentinel’s system.”
Cyclone raises an eyebrow.
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
River studies her carefully.
“That system runs a lot of infrastructure.”
“I know.”
“So if we shut it down wrong…”
“…the city could still collapse.”
“I know.”
River nods slowly.
“You have a plan.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
She exhales slowly.
“About three hours.”
Cyclone whistles quietly.
“That’s ambitious.”
River looks toward the skyline.
Then back at Boone.
“You trust her?”
Boone doesn’t hesitate.
“With my life.”
River nods once.
“Good enough for me.”
Logan gestures toward the SUV.
“Then let’s get moving.”
We climb into the vehicle.
The city rushes past outside the windows.
Freeways glowing.
Traffic humming.
Everything working perfectly—
Because the system is still running.
But not for long.
Wren watches the skyline carefully.
“The observer node is waiting.”
“For what?” Blade asks.
“For my final directive.”
Gage shifts in his seat.
“That sounds ominous.”
“It is.”
The SUV turns onto the downtown streets.
The infrastructure tower rises ahead of us.
Thirty stories of glass and steel.
The place where the cascade almost began.
River checks his watch.
“Federal teams cleared the building.”
“Security perimeter is ours.”
Cyclone loads a fresh magazine into his rifle.
“Just in case someone tries to stop us.”
Boone glances at Wren.
“You ready?”
She closes the laptop slowly.
The screen goes dark.
“Yes.”
The SUV stops at the base of the tower.
The team steps out into the night.
Wind moves between the tall buildings.
The tower looms above us.
Silent.
Waiting.
Wren looks up at it.
Inside that building—
Sentinel’s system still runs.
Still learning.
Still evolving.
But tonight—
It ends.
River gestures toward the entrance.
“Alright.”
“Let’s go shut down a ghost.”
And together—
The Golden Team and a few of the Brave Team walk into the building where the final decision is waiting.
