It was a choice born of every act of restraint, of every boundary he had respected when he held the power to subdue me: the way he had lowered his guard before my disguise at the Winter Wheel, the care with which he had sheltered me in his camp without touching me during the fever, and the courage with which he had stood beside me to challenge his entire realm.
I met his eyes and crossed the final step between us, pressing the palms of my hands against the rough leather over his chest.
Beneath my fingers I felt the heavy, surging strike of his heart, a powerful rhythm reaching for the beat of mine.
“Darian,” I whispered, lifting my face to his.
With infinite care, Darian rested his hands against my hips, holding back the immense strength of his body so as not to crowd me, leaving every second of the approach in my hands.
“Tell me what you want, Liora,” he answered, his voice roughened with immense tenderness. “Only what you want.”
“I want to choose you,” I said with a certainty that left no room for doubt or shadow. “I want us to seal the first stage of the bond. Tonight. Before the realm tries to speak in our name.”
A deep tremor passed through the sovereign’s shoulders.
His amber eyes flared with liquid gold, yet there was no haste, no force in his movement. His fingers slid up my back with reverent slowness, drawing me against him until the warmth of his chest met mine.
Our scents broke together in the room like two currents of fresh water meeting in an estuary: the deep cedar, clean smoke, and cold iron of his presence enfolding the rain, night flower, and ocean salt of my skin, weaving a harmony so dense and intoxicating that a ragged breath caught in my throat.
I lifted my left hand and slowly unfastened the three pearl buttons at the collar of my gown, parting the cloth to bare the curve of my throat and the smooth skin over the scent gland at my collarbone.
Darian swallowed hard, gazing upon the bared skin with absolute devotion.
“Iven explained the process to me,” I whispered against his ear, feeling the sear of his breath graze my cheek. “No deep bite. Only the touch of skin, breath, and shallow blood. A shared resonance.”
“A shared resonance,” Darian repeated like a sacred vow.
With steady, astonishingly gentle fingers, Darian untied the leather lacing of his dark shirt, pushing the linen back to expose the right side of his neck and the base of his shoulder, offering his own flesh with the same vulnerability I had given him.
He lowered his head toward my neck.
The first contact was a warm, trembling brush of his lips directly over the point where my pulse hammered wild.
A jolt of liquid heat shot down my spine, lighting every nerve ending in my body with an intensity so sweet and searing that my fingers tangled in the dark hair at the nape of his neck, holding him close.
My inner wolf threw back her head and released a silent howl of pure triumph deep in my chest.
Darian parted his lips slowly, grazing the skin over my gland with the tips of his canines.
There was no pain—only a brief, sharp, burning sting as the edge of ivory parted the surface, drawing a single bead of blood that mingled instantly with the heat of his saliva and the unmasked essence of his scent.
In that same second I leaned into his bared throat, parted my lips, and pressed my teeth into the curve of his neck, breaking the skin with a light, decisive bite that sealed the complete reciprocity of the pact.
The world outside fell away entirely.
A shock of bright, living warmth flared in the center of my chest and rushed through my veins like a torrent of white fire.
I felt Darian’s pulse thrumming inside my own blood. I felt the unbridled power of his primal wolf bowing before me with boundless devotion; I felt his relief, his wonder, and the vast peace flooding his soul at knowing himself answered and chosen.
A thread of vital resonance—invisible and taut as tempered steel so long as both of us held it—stretched between our bodies, bearing pain and calm alike without shackling the will of either one.
Darian closed his eyes, rested his forehead in the hollow of my shoulder, and wrapped his arms around me, drawing me close with a protective, serene strength that left me feeling freer and more powerful than I had ever been in my life.
We stood held together for long minutes before the fire, listening to the shared cadence of our hearts while the midnight rain washed the stones of the citadel.
The incomplete mark burned softly at my collarbone like a warm caress—a seal of truth no Council could contest, and no court intrigue could shatter.
I lifted a hand and touched Darian’s cheek, feeling the rough shadow of his beard beneath my fingertips.
The Alpha opened his eyes and looked at me with boundless tenderness, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the corner of my mouth.
“Thank you for choosing me, Liora.”
“So long as I am free to do so, Darian,” I answered, a quiet smile warming my face.
Darian nodded slowly, sealing our agreement with a look that required no further oaths.
“Tomorrow we will stand before the realm as two sovereign wills. And after the ceremony, when your body has fully healed in the spring, we will decide the next step of our lives together.”
I rested my head against his chest, drawing in the deep peace of his presence while the embers in the hearth settled to a quiet red.
Tomorrow the Court of Honor in Asteria would be an arena of political friction and hostile eyes, and the shadow of the latent marker in my blood still waited for its hour in the dark.
Yet tonight, beneath the shelter of the east tower, the ash-stained fugitive and the sovereign of the Crown had sealed their own destiny.
And there was no power in all of Eryndor capable of stripping away the truth of what we had won.
