6. Tomorrow #2

My heart felt like it would fall out of my chest at the sight of the police near my building. Kyro barely put the car in park before I jumped out. Tuesday sat on the curb with a tear drenched face.

“Tuesday! Tuesday! Are you okay? What happened?” I asked once I was close to her.

She jumped up from her seat and ran into my arms. “Tomorrow, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry! I should have listened.”

Kyro stood on the side of us with sympathetic eyes. I was confused because I still had no idea what the hell happened. “Day, what happened? Did someone hurt you?”

“Miss Bennett,” an officer called out to me. When I turned to him, he gave me a faint smile. “I’m Detective Cumberland, and I’ll be investigating the theft of your apartment.”

My neck stretched toward him. “Excuse me. What do you mean theft of my apartment?”

I looked down at Tuesday, whose tears still fell from her eyes. “Um, while we were gone, Mama and some men came in and stole stuff.”

My arms loosened from around her, and I stepped back. Stole stuff! That couldn’t have been what she said. “Can I go into my apartment?” I asked Detective Cumberland.

He nodded before he told me that I could.

Kyro grabbed my arm before I could walk off, then pulled me into a tight hug.

He spoke into my ear. “I don’t care what it looks like when we get in there.

All that shit can be replaced. This is no one’s fault except your trifling ass mama’s. ” He kissed my forehead. “I love you.”

My breath hitched to his confession. It was the first time that he admitted it with words. I knew it already through his actions. “I love you too.”

Together, hand-in-hand, we walked toward my apartment. The door was still open because officers were inside taking photos. I took a deep breath before I walked in.

“Oh, God!” My knees weakened at the sight of what was left. “Why would she do this?”

Like an omen the first place that really caught my eye was the place where the refrigerator used to be. The bitch took the fucking refrigerator. My head slowly turned to Kyro. In my mind, a scene played out of a crackhead with my shit strapped on their damn back.

No, she didn’t just steal things. She vandalized my damn place.

In just the living room alone, all the big electronics and most of the furniture were gone.

Everything that was left had damage to it.

It was either broken, cut up, or had paint or spray paint on it.

My eyes cut over to my creative corner where I sketched and painted. It was all destroyed.

The first tear fell. I saw Kyro step out of the apartment.

I walked through and shook my head at the shit that I noticed was taken.

The bitch took all the food out of the cabinets.

I bet she ate those leftovers from the fucking Salisbury steak that she claimed was just okay in the refrigerator that she stole.

“Miss Bennett, there is something interesting about all of this. There was no theft or damage in two of the three bedrooms. It appears that the only room that was damaged and taken from was yours,” Detective Cumberland revealed.

My laugh was hard. How could it not be? I walked down the hall toward my bedroom. The doors to August’s and Tuesday’s rooms were open. Just like the detective said, their rooms were un-fucking-touched. When I got to my room, my hand quickly covered my mouth from the shock.

This bitch, or whoever, spray-painted bitch and ho on my wall. They stripped my bed and shredded my mattress. “Why does it smell like that in here?”

When I turned to Detective Cumberland, there was a flash of anger in his eyes. “Someone urinated on your mattress and other belongings. Miss Bennett, I am so sorry that this happened to you.”

“Wow! My mother hates me that much.” With hurtful eyes, I spoke to the detective. “I’ve never done anything to this woman except love my brother and sister when she couldn’t.”

Seconds later, Kyro walked in. “Ah, fuck no! Is there anything that you need out of

I walked over to my closet and opened it. The bitch took my clothes . . . all of them. I chuckled. “Well, yeah, I did. Nothing that I need is here anymore.”

Kyro walked over to where I stood, wrapped his arm around me, then kissed my temple.

“Let’s go. You have stuff at my place, and we’ll get you what you need tomorrow.

Tuesday already packed her stuff for tonight.

My people are coming over tomorrow and putting August’s things in storage.

Tuesday’s things are going to be moved to my place in the spare room. ”

My head snapped in his direction. “Wha . . . what? You don’t have a spare bedroom, Kyro.”

“I don’t need you to worry about any of that shit. Let’s go.” He grabbed my hand, then pulled me out of the room and then the house.

When he put me in his car, Tuesday was already in the back seat.

He told me that he wanted to talk to the detective for a second before we left.

I sat in the front seat with my eyes zoned in on him and the detective as they talked.

I didn’t know what to say to Tuesday. Kyro said this wasn’t her fault, but my mind didn’t want to reconcile that.

Life was a series of causes and effects.

My mind told me that the cause of my place being robbed and vandalized was a direct result of Tuesday bringing that bitch to my house.

In my heart, I knew that, in her wildest dreams, Tuesday never imagined that woman would do anything like this to us.

Crack, meth, heroine, or whatever she was on was a hell of a drug.

At this point, I felt she should try fentanyl out and see how she faired with that shit.

“Tomorrow, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think she would do anything like this. I am so sorry,” Tuesday said through her tears.

I wanted to scream at her. I wanted to ask her how she could be so stupid. A slap to her face even entered my mind, but what would it help? What would be the point? I knew that she was truly remorseful. It would be irresponsible of me to make her feel worse.

“Tuesday, I know you didn’t. It will all be alright. All my stuff can be replaced,” I told her.

Before she responded, Kyro climbed in the car. “Alright, y’all, let’s get out of here.”

A Short Time Later . . .

It felt like in the depth of my happiness, life decided to show me that it could still fuck it up, then leave.

My spirit remained in shock for at least a week after Michelle and her crackhead friends destroyed my apartment.

My neighbor’s doorbell camera caught all the surveillance needed to charge Michelle and three others with breaking and entering, vandalism, and theft.

Now they just had to find their crackhead asses.

The night it all happened, Kyro took me and Tuesday to a hotel. We stayed there for a few days, then he brought us to his house. My emotions were too much when I saw how much effort he’d taken to welcome me and my sister in his place. He changed his home gym into a bedroom for Tuesday.
