Chapter 31

GAVIN

“We have to go after him!” My voice echoes in the throne room. I can’t give up on Kyler. He sacrificed himself—twice—for me. My knees buckle, and pain snakes up my legs from the drop. What have I done? I’ve condemned Kyler for something so ridiculous as becoming a Grand Mage.

I wanted the status to prove to myself, to others, that I’m worthy of the same things as Leander, being the firstborn. But I realize His Majesty doesn’t care. I’m third in line. What use am I to the king other than for alliances?

Ailey started home as soon as we arrived back in Lane mere hours ago. She said she’d send me word on her plan, but my mind was so fogged that I didn’t pay attention to anything she said on the voyage back.

I’m a fool.

“I will not be spending any more resources on this ridiculous endeavor. You failed your Task and—”

“Fuck my Task. I just need Kyler.” I search my mind for a way to get His Majesty to see my side. “He’s—” NO! I can’t tell His Majesty that Kyler is merfolk. What am I thinking? I’m not.

“Fine. I’ll go alone.” Once I make the decision, I feel free. I will save Kyler. Somehow. I’ll search the seas for the ship and…

I rip my clothes off as I run toward the big stained-glass windows in the back of the room.

“Grab him!” His Majesty calls.

But I’m too fast. I don’t need His Majesty’s approval to go after my heart. Damon opens a window, and I jump with my guard following close behind.

“I was wondering when you’d decide to do this yourself.”

Damon’s laughter spurs me forward.
