Epilogue

“Are you excited?” Wilt asked, as he passed her a glass of champagne. He looked so delicious in his tuxedo that she was having trouble keeping her hands off him.

“Don’t look at me like that when we’re in a roomful of people,” he groaned before he took a long gulp of his champagne.

Indigo laughed. “And in answer to your question, I’m very excited. I can’t believe this day is finally here.”

It was the official launch of Jeffrey’s jewelry line. Greta’s marketing campaign had been sublime. Little teasers of what was to come had been sprinkled through the press for the last month.

Tonight, it was about to be revealed to the world.

The who’s who of Australian society had converged on Perth over the last few days.

The hotel ballroom was packed with more billionaires than Indigo was aware existed.

Jordan and Kyle were there, and she’d enjoyed chatting to them.

She and Wilt had made a promise to go and visit them after she’d finished with the promotional tour for the collection.

She would need the break after her trip.

None of the high society present mattered to her. All that mattered was the man at her side, and the pictures that were going to be plastered on the screens as the models walked down the catwalk displaying every piece of Jeffrey’s collection.

She was going to wear the showstopper. The final piece that she hadn’t been able to take a photo of because of her attack. After much discussion, they decided that it wouldn’t be photographed, and it would be revealed at the launch.

All the guests would be handed a catalogue that had been put together of her photos, showing each piece, bar the one she wore tonight.

Everyone would believe the last picture was the last item of jewelry.

The lights in the room would be extinguished, and she would walk down the runway in the dark.

Once she reached the end, a single spotlight would be shone on her, and all would be revealed.

She couldn’t wait for that moment. It was going to be amazing.

“You are going to knock everyone’s socks off. And I wish I could afford the necklace you’re going to wear, because it looks amazing on you,” Wilt whispered, his lips brushing her ear and causing a shiver to course down her spine.

“It would be wonderful, but it’s a bit flashy for me. I prefer understated jewelry. Besides, I already have a Jeffrey Courteux original.” Indigo held up her left hand, the diamond engagement ring he’d given her the night before, glinting beneath the ballroom lights.

“I have to admit it looks stunning on you.”

“I love you,” she murmured as she leaned in and kissed him.

“Love you, back.”

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but it’s time.” Greta came up to them.

Anticipation and excitement bubbled inside of her. “Let’s do this.”

She went to move, but Wilt grabbed her hand, halting her exit. “I’ll be right here waiting for you.”

“I know.” She squeezed his hand and weaved her way through the crowd.

Life was amazing. It hadn’t been hard to transition to living in Perth. The Power Security family had welcomed her as if she’d always belonged with Wilt.

Indigo never would’ve guessed that the job of a lifetime would lead to her finding her love of a lifetime.

Margot Reid stood against the wall in the ballroom, her eyes fixed on the tall man in a tuxedo chatting to her boss.

Focusing on Damon kept her anxiety at bay.

She’d never been anxious before. She’d been quiet, but confident and happy, believing nothing bad couldn’t happen to her. Then she’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and her life had changed in a way she’d never thought possible.

The rose-colored glasses had been ripped off, and the harsh realities of how evil the world could really be slammed down on her.

Considering everything that had happened to the partners of the guys she worked with, she should’ve been aware that evil existed, but she’d still believed she was safe.

Now, everyone she looked at, she questioned if they were secretly coming up with plans that would harm people. That would take them from the world they’d always known to a place that only appeared in movies and books. A reality that the general Joe Black didn’t believe existed.

Damon looked over at her, and she ducked her head, pretending to study her nails. She’d always had a crush on him. Had from the moment she started working at Power Security.

Nothing could ever come of it, though.

He hardly paid any attention to her. He’d comforted her when she’d been shot and kidnapped by Narelle’s deranged work colleague–the only time he’d shown her a softer side of himself.

For a few brief moments, she wondered if he saw her as more than the receptionist who gave him messages and made coffee for him occasionally. Wondered if he saw her as the woman she was.

Then the reality set in.

Instead of seeing her as a woman, he saw her as a victim, and now, months later, he spoke to her even less than he had before. He was seven years older than her, and he would never see her as anything but a work colleague.

Maybe she should change jobs, because seeing him every day was hard. Yet the thought of leaving the safety of Power Security–where the main job of the men who worked there was to protect people–to go work somewhere else made her instantly anxious.

There was no chance anything would change and Damon would suddenly fall madly in love with her.

Real life didn’t work that way.
