14. Scarlett

Scarlett

Most men are ugly, it’s just a fact.

But this one? He’s rugged in a way, much larger than Iris. He could easily carry both of us off into the sunset.

Iris is an amazing witch. I’m honestly so grateful I got paired with someone as perfect as her. It’s why she deserves the perfect man. If I was being honest, I never saw it happening. I couldn’t imagine anyone being good enough for her.

Yet, as I look down at the sleeping man, I realize he’s perfect. Much more handsome than most of the men on Love Island, he even has a tan like he was on the beach. I’ll just have to help him convince Iris that he’s the one.

He blinks open his eyes again; they remind me of a great white shark, which is thrilling.

“Hello, little fox. Where’s Iris?”

“Sleeping. Mistress doesn’t sleep much. We must be quiet.”

His dark brow furrows, and he easily rips his hand free of the restraints to pet my fur.

“Why doesn’t she sleep?”

“She has visions. Sometimes they’re dark. I think it’s why she’s afraid of you.”

“Afraid of me?” he says, completely appalled by the idea.

“She’s a gentle soul. She’s not a predator like us. She doesn’t understand. If you want to win her heart, you’ll have to tone down the ripping out of throats and maybe the whole fated mate thing.”

“Why would I do such a thing? She is my fated mate.”

“I know that, you know that. She needs to know that, but in time. Haven’t you watched any romance movies?”

“What is a movie?”

Oh, Hecate, I’ve got a lot of work to do if I’m going to convince Iris that we need to keep him.

“Just act normal. Okay?”

“Okay,” he promises, but something tells me the Slayer doesn’t know what normal is if it slapped him in the face. Quickly I nod my head, retying his binds so Iris doesn’t freak out, and pretend to fall back to sleep.

“Scarlett?” she whispers my name, but I don’t stir as she goes to the bathroom to start her day.

“Why are we pretending to sleep?” he asks as soon as she’s gone and I give him a little nip.

Even if I like this one, it seems all men are slightly clueless no matter what when it comes to women.

“Iris has to open the shop. When she does, I’ll put on the best romance movies so you can learn what to do and what not to do,” I tell him.

He rests his head on the pillow and sighs. “I thought my mate would be excited to see me.”

I nip him again, and he glares at me. “Stop being such a crybaby. I’ll help you woo her. Just listen to everything I say.”

“Fine. I will listen to you, little fox.”

I boop his nose with mine as a reward and skitter off to find Iris. Of course, my favorite neurotic witch is pacing around in the bathroom muttering to herself.

I love her so much.

“Why are you panicking?”

“Why am I panicking? Because there’s a six foot five vampire slayer tied to my bed who’s claiming to be my mate.”

“Just talk to him, give him a chance. I mean, he did wait like thousands of years to meet you.”

Iris looks at me like I just kicked her, before splashing some water on her face. I know I can’t push her too much. Iris is the kind of witch that needs to figure out things in her own time. If you try to push her in one direction, she’ll work like hell to do the opposite.

“At least find out his motives? The witches who cursed you? How he was brought here,” I suggest, and Iris’ brows furrow as she gives me a sharp nod.

“You’re right. I’ll get to the bottom of this. See what information he has and then go from there.”

Internally I grin, because I know that this is going to be the most epic love match ever created.
