Chapter 20

What the World Remembers.

The station was quiet.

Too quiet.

Aira stood beside Ren, watching the place where Yuto had disappeared.

For years, she had imagined finding him.

She had imagined asking him why he left.

She had imagined being angry with him.

But now that he was gone again, she realized she had never wanted answers.

She had only wanted him to know that she remembered.

Ren looked at her.

“You okay?”

Aira nodded.

“I think so.”

The Keeper stood a short distance away.

“The forgotten will begin returning to the world.”

Aira looked at her.

“Will everyone remember them?”

“Not immediately.”

“Then what happens?”

“Their memories will return slowly.”

Aira looked toward the empty tracks.

“Will my mother remember Yuto?”

“Yes.”

“Will she remember everything?”

“No.”

Aira frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because memories are not photographs. They change when we carry them for too long.”

Aira understood.

Some memories would return exactly as they had happened.

Others would return as feelings.

A voice.

A smile.

A place.

A name.

Maybe that was enough.

Ren suddenly touched his forehead.

Aira turned toward him.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“You're lying.”

He smiled faintly.

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“You.”

Aira smiled.

“That's not surprising.”

“When we were children…”

He paused.

“I told you I was afraid of forgetting you.”

Aira nodded.

“You did.”

“And you told me something.”

“What?”

Ren looked at her.

“You said, ‘Then I'll remember for both of us.’”

Aira's eyes filled with tears.

“I said that?”

“You did.”

She smiled.

“I guess I kept my promise.”

Ren took her hand.

“You did.”

The Keeper watched them quietly.

Then she walked toward the old station doors.

Aira followed.

“Wait.”

The Keeper stopped.

“Will we ever see you again?”

The Keeper looked back.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“Whether you still need me.”

Aira smiled.

“I hope we don't.”

The Keeper smiled too.

“Then I hope you never see me again.”

She opened the door.

Sunlight poured through.

The old station began changing.

The cracked walls became clean.

The broken lights turned on.

The abandoned platform filled with people.

Aira watched in disbelief.

The station wasn't disappearing.

It was returning to the world.

People walked through the entrance.

A mother held her daughter's hand.

An old man looked around with tears in his eyes.

A young woman stood frozen beneath the station clock.

Each person remembered something.

Someone they had lost.

Someone they had loved.

Someone they had forgotten.

Aira looked at Ren.

“We did it.”

He smiled.

“Maybe.”

She laughed.

“You're supposed to say yes.”

“I don't want to get too confident.”

They walked outside.

The city was brighter than Aira remembered.

Her phone began ringing.

It was her mother.

Aira answered.

“Mom?”

Her mother's voice was trembling.

“I remember him.”

Aira stopped walking.

“Yuto?”

“Yes.”

Her mother began crying.

“I remember your brother.”

Aira closed her eyes.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Ren gently held her hand.

Her mother continued.

“I remember the day he was born.”

Aira smiled.

“Tell me about it.”

Her mother laughed through her tears.

“You were so jealous.”

Aira laughed too.

“I was?”

“You wouldn't let anyone hold him.”

For the first time, Aira could imagine the memory.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

She could see herself as a little girl.

Holding her baby brother.

Smiling.

Waiting for him to open his eyes.

The memory felt warm.

Real.

Alive.

When the call ended, Aira looked at Ren.

“What do you want to remember?”

He thought for a moment.

“This.”

He looked around.

“The moment everything became normal again.”

Aira smiled.

“Normal?”

“Yeah.”

She looked at their joined hands.

“Nothing about us is normal.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

They continued walking.

Behind them, the station clock began moving again.

This time, it didn't stop.

And beneath the sound of the city, Aira thought she heard a familiar voice.

Not calling her.

Not asking her to return.

Just saying goodbye.

She smiled.

“Goodbye, Yuto.”

Ren looked at her.

She squeezed his hand.

Then they walked toward the future together.
