Chapter 28

The Choice.

The darkness beneath the street was colder than Aira expected.

She and Ren stood at the bottom of the hidden staircase.

There were no tracks.

No photographs.

No doors.

Only a long empty passage leading into darkness.

Aira held Ren's hand.

“Do you remember this?”

“No.”

“Neither do I.”

They walked forward.

The farther they went, the quieter everything became.

Then they saw it.

A room filled with mirrors.

Hundreds of them.

Every mirror showed a different version of their lives.

In one, Aira was alone.

In another, Ren was gone.

In another, they had never met.

Then Aira saw one that made her stop.

She and Ren were standing together beside the river.

Older.

Happy.

Still holding hands.

Aira touched the glass.

“This is the future I want.”

Ren looked at it.

“So do I.”

A voice came from behind them.

“Then choose.”

They turned.

Mika stood in the doorway.

Aira stared at her.

“You knew we'd come here.”

Mika nodded.

“I've been waiting.”

“For what?”

“For you to remember the truth.”

Aira looked around.

“What is this place?”

“The place where choices become memories.”

Ren frowned.

“And what are we supposed to choose?”

Mika looked at them.

“Whether your love belongs to the past or the future.”

Aira didn't understand.

Mika pointed toward the mirrors.

“Every time you saved someone, you changed something.”

The mirrors began breaking one after another.

“Yuto was saved.”

“Haru was freed.”

“Your sister returned to memory.”

“The Keeper was released.”

Mika looked at Ren.

“But one promise remains.”

Aira's heart tightened.

“Which one?”

Mika answered quietly.

“The promise you made on the seventh day.”

Aira remembered.

She had stood at the station.

Ren was disappearing.

She had begged him to stay.

Then she made the final choice.

She had erased the memory.

Not to save herself.

To save him.

Aira looked at Ren.

“I remember now.”

Ren's eyes filled with tears.

“You chose me.”

“Yes.”

“And you forgot everything because of me.”

Aira shook her head.

“No.”

She took his hand.

“I chose us.”

The mirrors shattered.

A bright light filled the room.

Mika stepped backward.

“You've made your choice.”

Aira looked at her.

“What happens now?”

Mika smiled.

“Now you get to keep it.”

The room disappeared.

Aira opened her eyes.

She was standing beside the river.

Ren was beside her.

The sun was rising.

No train.

No station.

No mysterious voice.

Just the sound of water moving beneath the morning light.

Ren looked at her.

“Is it really over?”

Aira smiled.

“I think so.”

He laughed softly.

“Finally.”

Aira leaned against him.

For the first time, there was no countdown waiting for them.

No promise demanding a sacrifice.

No forgotten person calling from the darkness.

They were simply two people who had survived something impossible.

Ren looked at her.

“What happens now?”

Aira smiled.

“Now we live.”

He took her hand.

“Together?”

She looked into his eyes.

“Together.”

Behind them, something small fell into the river.

A silver key.

It sank beneath the surface.

And this time, neither of them followed it.
