Sexy Bodyguard Summer (Sunbreak Harbor Security Romance #15)
Chapter 1
CHAPTER ONE
Faye
“What?! Are you serious?!” My younger sister, Becca, shouted over our video call, her eyes bouncing out of her head. “How?!”
I laughed and put my finger to my lips. “Shh, my boss is on a rampage today. I don’t want her to see me on the phone.
” I set my phone on my desk and looked as if I were searching for something on the computer.
I’ve mastered all the tricks of looking busy.
“I was listening to the radio on the way to work and they were giving away tickets. I figured why not try? I never expected to win.”
“How many did you get?”
“That’s the downside- only one.”
“One? Damn it.” Becca sulked.
“I know.”
We had tried for days to get tickets to the sold out show happening tonight at the High Tide Pavilion in Sunbreak Harbor. One of my favorite singers was performing, but the tickets were gone in an instant. Becca had no luck and neither did my best friend Jodie, who also wanted to go.
Having a single ticket without them felt…wrong, almost.
“Maybe I won’t go.” I chewed on my bottom lip, a habit when I’m stressed.
“What? You can’t not go! I mean, how many times do you win concert tickets?”
“But without you or Jodie, how fun will it be? I’ve never gone to a concert alone.”
“That’s true. Me either. But people do it all the time. I’m sure you’ll have a great time.”
“Thanks, Bec. I should go. Not like my social life is hopping, anyway.”
Becca laughed. “You spend too much time with your cat.”
“Hey! There’s nothing wrong with that. I love Binx.”
“We all love Binx. But he’s not the one who’ll get you laid. A social life will.”
My mouth dropped open in mock surprise. Leave it to my sister to zing me hard.
Just then, my boss, Lauren, popped her head into my office. “Morning Faye. May I see you in my office, please?”
“Sure.” I faked a smile as my stomach dropped to my knees. I hated impromptu meetings.
Lauren disappeared down the hall, her heels clicking on the floor.
“Shit, sis, I need to go.”
“She’s got the stick up her ass sideways today, hmm?”
I couldn’t help but snicker. “Love you, talk later.” I ended the video call but before heading to the meeting, I typed out a quick text to Jodie.
Me: I won a single ticket to tonight’s concert at the Pavilion from the radio! Should I go alone?
Jodie: OMG! WHAT?! Go! You have to! And take lots of videos
I stood up and tucked my phone in my skirt pocket.
Guess I was headed to a concert tonight.
When the clock hit five o’clock, I nearly ran out the door, glad the day was over. That Friday feeling was unlike anything else and felt even better with exciting plans happening later on.
After a meeting about a new series the publishing house acquired, I spent my afternoon making phone calls and starting the onboarding process for the new author.
The hours flew as my nerves steadily grew. But once I was in my car, my radio blasting the same music I’d hear live soon, my nerves morphed into excitement.
At home, I scarfed down dinner, fed Binx, and took a shower, taking my time getting ready.
Without much of a nightlife, my wardrobe was seriously lacking but I settled on a jean skirt, black lacy top, and cute Adidas sneakers to match.
After doing my hair and makeup, I kissed Binx goodbye and headed downtown.
Sunbreak Harbor, the town I grew up in, was a breezy, small, seaside resort town.
I loved driving along the coast, seeing the classic candy-striped lighthouse that many tourists came to see.
The summer brought thousands of guests here, filling up the creaky boardwalk, and eating at our favorite local spots, like the Salty Spoon.
As a young girl, my sister and I spent long days at the beach, a short walk from our seaside home. I knew the boardwalk like the back of my hand and couldn’t wait to raise a family here one day.
After a short ten-minute drive, I pulled into the High Tide Pavillion, the ocean glistening from the setting sun. The place was packed, but I managed to find a spot not too far from the front.
Checking my makeup once more, I slipped my small bag across my chest, tucked in my keys, license, money, and phone, and hurried out of the car.
The line to enter swarmed halfway down the parking lot and I grabbed a spot. While waiting, I pulled out my phone and located the ticket information on my email app.
Admit one- general admission, radio host section.
I wondered if it was standing room only.
The line moved pretty quickly, and soon I was inside, after passing through security. I found my way around, locating the section for my ticket with the help of an attendant.
Only a few people lingered in the area, but there were no seats. Instead, it was directly in front of the stage to the right, a barrier separating each section.
I took a spot as close to the barrier as I could, resting my back up against the side of one, keeping myself tucked into a corner.
With no one to gossip with, I went into full people watching mode. My eyes scanned over the crowd, growing bigger as each second passed. I took in the security guards, standing, waiting, ready for action.
About a half hour later, an opening band came out on stage, and I turned to face the stage head on.
A security guard took position in front of me, one that hadn’t been there before, because I would’ve noticed him.
There was no way someone could not.
I mean, the guy was huge.
A literal beast of a man.
He towered over me, with at least ten inches in height above me, my eyes reaching his mid-chest level.
He had dark features, with a full beard and dark brown hair buzzed on the sides and shorter curls on the top.
Heat flooded my body.
He was so fucking hot.
I forgot about everyone around me, everything around me, the stage, the loud music. It all fell away, as if it were only him and me there.
And then he made eye contact.
My entire body flushed and my blood was on fire. My ears burned along with my cheeks, and I squeezed my legs together.
Holy shit. I’d never had such a visceral reaction before.
A slow, sexy grin spread across his handsome face.
My heart rate tripled in speed.
What the hell was I doing? He was the security guard at the concert, for fuck’s sake. He couldn’t flirt with the people he was there to protect.
Yet there we stood, making googly eyes at each other.
I was a fucking goner.
