2. Deceptive Calm
Chapter two
Deceptive Calm
I wake with a start, my heart leaping into my throat, only to be met by an unfamiliar ceiling.
The wood is rough and weathered, dimly lit by the early light filtering through a single window.
The scent of herbs and something faintly metallic lingers in the air.
The bed under me is soft, too soft compared to the cold stone floors I’ve grown used to.
It isn’t the sterile chill of a dungeon that I had grown accustomed to.
This place feels distant, foreign to me.
I blink rapidly, the disorientation lingering, my mind struggling to catch up with the shift in my surroundings. The rhythmic pulse of my heartbeat echoes too loudly in the lull of the room.
I sit up quickly, my breath hitching as a sudden wave of dizziness hits me.
The raw pain that once pulsed through my body is gone.
The cuts, bruises, and burns have all healed.
I reach instinctively for the jagged scar on my left side, where the dark iron chains had once cut into my flesh, but there is nothing there now, nothing but smooth, unblemished skin.
I blink, confusion flooding my mind. Did I heal on my own? I can’t remember when or how it happened. One moment, I am drowning in darkness, and the next, this.
I rub my eyes, struggling to push the weight of the uncertainty from my chest. This can’t be real. I’ve been taken. I am still trapped in some way. A gnawing fear crawls up my spine. No matter where I am, I can’t let my guard down.
The room is small and rustic, with walls of timber and a single window letting in the pale morning light.
It isn’t much, but it’s enough, too much, perhaps.
There is a fire crackling in a stone hearth across the room, the flames dancing and casting erratic shadows on the walls.
Everything is eerily still, as if the world is holding its breath, waiting for something to break.
I swing my legs off the bed, my bare feet touching the cold wooden floor.
The feeling is solid beneath my weight. My knees wobble as I slowly force my body to stand, a strange feeling in my chest. I’m not in the Dark Realm anymore, but I’m not free either.
The walls feel too close, the air too heavy, and I can’t shake the sensation that I’m still being watched.
I move toward the window, my fingers brush the rough wood of the frame lightly as I peer outside.
The view that meets my eyes catches my breath: a forest of beautiful, towering trees, their branches coated with mist, the sunlight filtering through them like a veil.
The forest feels endless, its roots buried deep within the earth, untamed and wild, its presence ancient, nothing like the ominous woods I was in—
My mind spins.
How long has it been? How long have I been asleep?
Forcing the thoughts aside, I shift my focus back to the window.
There is no sign of life aside from the rustling of the wind through the leaves and the fresh breeze outside that smells of pine.
It’s a landscape so far removed from the barren wasteland I escaped.
This place feels alive, untouched by the horrors I left behind.
I can’t help but let out a breath, longing to feel the open sky against my skin, for the freedom I once took for granted, for a world that isn’t smothering me.
My chest tightens from the memories I haven’t allowed myself to face.
But that freedom still feels distant. I am far from home, from the place where I once knew safety, if such a place ever truly existed.
I try to open the window, but a sharp, invisible resistance stops me.
No.
My heart quickens as I push harder against the frame, my magic flaring in response.
I can feel it, deep inside, a pulsing force beneath my skin, still there, though weakened and fragmented.
It screams to get out, to be used, but the resistance only grows stronger.
There is a barrier, solid and impenetrable, pulsing beneath my fingertips, one I recognize immediately.
Panic surges through me as I back away, my chest rising and falling in even breaths.
My focus darts to the door across the room.
It is ajar, just slightly, as if it is waiting for me to make a move.
But every instinct screams at me that it doesn’t matter.
There is nowhere to run. The walls are warded.
I can feel it, a subtle pull in the air itself, like a weight pressing against my chest. An unmistakable spell or binding is keeping me here in this place against my will, with no way to break free. An old magic, something far beyond my power.
It surrounds me, but unlike the crude, harsh spells I was subject to, this feels more . . . refined. It wraps itself around me, invisible and inescapable.
I’ve been here before, trapped in places not of my choosing. Only this time, it isn’t chains of iron or cells of stone.
It is a different kind of prison, one forged from magic and promises of safety, one that traps me more fully. It is a deceptive calm, an illusion of control and fleeting freedom. The room, despite its warmth and comfort, feels oppressive.
Time passes in this strange place, and yet no one comes to explain why I am here, what happened to me, or what has been done.
I wander the space in search of some clue as to my purpose here, why the Prince would keep me alive after all that happened.
He could have ended me. He could have let me die, but he didn’t.
Instead, he brought me here. My head spins as I try to make sense of any of it.
I let out a breath, continuing my exploration.
In the corner of the room stands a small table with a few chairs, a cupboard with faded linens, and a narrow shelf stacked with books I can’t reach from where I stand.
On the opposite wall hangs a mirror, its frame old but well-kept.
I hesitate only a moment before curiosity drives me forward.
What do I look like now?
I can't recall the last time I saw my reflection in a mirror, rather than in a puddle on the cold, hard floor or in the battered armor worn by the guards.
Certainly not since they tore through me, used me.
Since they made me feel like I was nothing.
Not since the chains were wrapped around my soul as much as my body.
My hands tremble as I approach the mirror, my heart pounding in my chest. I avoid looking for a moment, afraid of what I might see, of the damage that might still be lingering beneath the surface.
When I do finally look, I don’t recognize the face staring back at me.
It’s still me, of course it is. There is no mistaking my unflattering, dull hazel eyes, the same ones passed down from my mother.
There is a faint pallor to my skin, as though life itself has slipped through my fingers, a hollowness in my cheeks, the sharpness of my bones more pronounced.
My hair, once long and sleek, is now a ragged, tangled mess of dark curls that falls just past my shoulders.
My eyes are too wide, too haunted, a reminder that I’ve seen and lost too much to ever return to what I once was.
But something far more disturbing catches my attention, my scars, or rather, the lack of them.
They were the marks I bore, ragged silver lines that had stretched across my skin from years of abuse, and memories burned into my mind as much as my flesh.
I had carried them with me like a brand, a reminder of everything I had endured, but now, they are gone.
I run my fingers over the smooth surface of my face, unable to tear my eyes away from the person staring back at me, a stranger.
The wood creaks softly from behind, tearing me from my thoughts. My skin prickles with panic as I spin around, desperate to find the source, but there is no one. I’m still alone.
I exhale sharply, forcing myself to calm down. I can't afford to let my fear get the best of me.
As I glance around the room again, my eyes find something new. On the table near the fire, a neatly folded set of clothes lay freshly folded. The fabric is simple and of better quality than anything I’ve worn in years. The dark fabric feels soft beneath my fingers.
Why am I being treated like this?
The questions tumble over one another in my mind as the confusion turns bitter.
I want to tear the room apart. I want to scream at the walls, at the cabin, at the male who brought me here.
I want to lash out, to inflict even a fraction of the pain I have endured, but I’m powerless to do any of it, just as weak and powerless now as I have been my entire life, unable to stop anything, to change anything.
Even with my magic, it wouldn’t be enough to get through the wards or to change the past.
I take one last glance at the broken girl staring back at me before turning away, forcing myself to focus on something else, anything other than my own thoughts.
I move toward the window again, the tips of my fingers trace lazy circles in the condensation, the cool glass easing the burning in my chest as I glance out at the endless forest.
Suddenly, the shadows around me grow darker, accompanied by a sharp sound that sends a shiver down my spine. My heart pounds painfully in my chest, a cold sweat breaking out across my skin as fear floods my veins.
A low, rich voice comes from behind me, making the hair on my arms stand. “You look better,” the voice remarks, my body turns instinctively to find his eyes scanning me from head to toe. “Quite the upgrade from the battered and bruised state I found you in.”
My pulse thrums frantically, my eyes widening at the sight of him. His tall frame is taking up the entire doorway.
“Oberon.” The sound is barely above a breath, intended more for myself.
Shadows cling to him, swirling at his feet like living things bound to him, answering to his every will. “I wondered if you'd ever wake up,” he muses, his face unreadable, a half-smile playing on his lips.
My body freezes.
My heart pounds frantically against my ribs.
He watches me a moment, unbothered, his rugged, sharp features giving him an undeniably dangerous appearance.
His eyes glow faintly with an eerie light, as his dark hair falls untamed and impossibly perfect around his face in effortless waves.
Every inch of him looks as if he were crafted with careful precision, wild yet controlled.
The tousled mess seems deliberate, the kind of chaos that only someone like him can pull off with such raw, magnetic allure.
Tattoos spiral up his arms, their intricate designs peeking just beneath the fabric of his shirt, hinting at hidden stories etched into his skin.
I can’t seem to tear my gaze away, my eyes tracing the dark lines, each one more mysterious than the last, wondering what untold meaning lies behind them and what it will take to uncover their story.
So dangerous, yet strangely beautiful. Simple dark clothing covers most of his body, but the way the fabric clings to his muscular frame only seems to highlight the tension in his presence, no weapons, no cloak, just him.
My breath hitches, my muscles coiling instinctively.
“Do you know who I am?” he asks finally, his smooth voice cutting through my thoughts, sounding almost amused, as if this is some sort of game to him.
I steel my expression, forcing it into something unimpressed despite the way my pulse races at his presence.
“Yes.” The word comes out firmer than I feel as I tilt my head, challenging him. “The infamous Prince with an overinflated ego.”
A low chuckle rumbles from his chest. “I see my reputation precedes me.”
“Why am I here? What do you want from me?” I growl, mustering every ounce of strength and courage I didn’t know I had.
He chuckles softly, a dark glint in his eyes. “Oh, I assure you. You will find out soon enough.” He pauses as if considering his next words. “But for now, let's just say you’re here to make things . . . interesting.”
His gaze lingers on me for a moment longer before he speaks again, his tone dripping with playful mockery.
“You could really use a bath.” Something close to disgust flickers across his face, but it vanishes as quickly as it came.
“And some rest wouldn't hurt either.” He brings his arms up, crossing his chest like he has grown bored with the conversation. “You look like you’ve been through hell.”
I meet his stare, my voice surprisingly steady despite my trembling body. “I have been through hell!” I snap with a sharpness that surprises me.
Without thinking, I grab the closest object I can find, my fingers curling around the cool metal of a lantern, seconds before hurling it at him with all the force I can muster.
He moves fast, too fast, deflecting it with an almost lazy flick of his wrist. The lantern clatters to the ground, the flame within flickering wildly before settling.
He lets out a breathless chuckle that holds no humor.
Unfazed, he closes the distance between us with slow, deliberate steps.
I can feel the heat from his body, a warmth that sends an unexpected shiver down my spine.
He leans in so near that I am swallowed by his presence, his dark form consuming the space until he is all I can see.
My heart slams against my chest, my breath catching as my back presses against the cold window behind me.
His scent, sharp and intoxicating, curls into my lungs, making my head spin.
The shadows he commands slide around us, their movement threatening but somehow elegant, dancing through the air with sinister rhythm. His sudden closeness overwhelms my senses. My skin flushes, heat flooding into my face at the proximity.
He leans in close enough that his breath ruffles my hair.
For just a heartbeat, I think I might drown in the weight of his focus.
His smile, dark and full of wicked intent, makes my stomach tighten with fear.
His voice is a soft command, laced with something that makes my blood run cold.
“Get yourself cleaned up and get some sleep. I’ll be back soon enough. ”
As quickly as he appeared, he vanished. The room grows colder in his absence, his scent lingering in the air as dread and something else tighten my insides.
