24. Trust

Chapter twenty-four

Trust

We walk in silence for a while, my body still reeling from everything that has just happened. Neither of us seems to know what to say next.

After a while, he stops and turns to face me.

“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice serious, the weight of the question settling between us like an invisible force.

It is a loaded question with no easy answer.

He did kidnap me, but at the same time, he saved me. He has become the light in my darkness.

Every fiber of my being screams to turn away from his gaze, to avoid the question altogether, because I’m not sure anymore.

Part of me wants to say no, but the rest of me, the part that doesn’t want to face the truth, isn’t so sure anymore.

My eyes scan his face, looking for any hint of what will happen depending on how I answer.

I can’t find the words. So instead, I simply nod.

In an instant, his shadows consume me, turning the bright day into overwhelming darkness.

He pauses, and his body tenses as he studies me for a moment, expecting panic to take over. It doesn’t, even in this blackened space, I know I’m not alone. His features obscure, but still here, standing by my side.

He lets out a deep breath, the tension in his stance relaxing. The darkness is almost blinding except for a few rays of light that he lets through, just barely enough to make out his shape. A subtle reminder of the world outside this strange, shared space.

He takes a step closer, so close our bodies nearly brush before raising his hands instinctively, as though to touch me, but he hesitates, caught between instinct and restraint.

Instead, he simply smiles, turns facing the path we have been walking, places his hand gently on the small of my back, and continues to guide me forward.

After another moment of walking, he stops again and turns toward me, struggling for the words he doesn’t know whether he wants to say. The shadows around us seem to shift, as if trying to hold us in this moment, where the rest of the world has faded away, leaving just the two of us.

Finally, he smiles, as the shadows begin to slip away, my breath catches in my throat.

The world before me opens up, and I gasp at what I see.

The ocean, vast and beautiful, stretches out endlessly before us.

I step away from him, moving toward the shoreline, taking in the salty sea air.

The sound of waves crashing against the sand is hypnotic.

Seabirds call overhead, and shells dot the water’s edge.

There are no words for the untouched beauty before me.

I turn back to him, a wide, awe-struck smile spreading across my face.

“Beautiful,” he says, his voice soft and filled with wonder. I smile faintly, already turning back toward the water. “So fucking beautiful,” he repeats.

I look at him then, really look. His attention isn’t on the ocean or the horizon behind me. It is fixed on my face, as if he’s decided, just this once, not to pull his words back.

I feel my cheeks flush, and my gaze locks with his before turning away.

The ocean’s rhythm continues, but the world feels like it has stopped. The vastness of it all, the crashing waves, the endless horizon, seems to echo the turmoil inside me, the storm of emotions I can’t quite grasp.

Every time I think I understand what is happening between us, it slips further away.

I turn back to him, still reeling from his words.

He is standing there, his face a mixture of uncertainty and something more fragile, vulnerability.

I’ve never seen him this way, not really, the male who has always been so composed, so guarded.

We let the silence stretch between us, the steady rhythm of the waves filling the space neither of us rushes to claim. The sea carries the moment forward, slowly and unassuming.

His attention is fixed somewhere between the tide and the horizon before his gaze drops to the sand. He shifts his weight, scuffing his boot through the damp grit. One hand tugs absently at the edge of his sleeve, a small, restless movement.

“What is it?” I ask.

He hesitates before he speaks, his voice low and steady.

“I shouldn’t have dragged you into this .

. . into my mess.” His eyes meet mine, dark with something close to regret, and I feel a knot tighten in my chest. “This life . . .” He pauses, then shakes his head faintly.

“It isn’t gentle. And it doesn’t allow for mistakes. ”

I open my mouth to respond, but the words catch in my throat.

How can I explain the conflicting emotions swirling inside me?

The confusion? The hurt? The longing? I want to tell him that it isn’t a mess, that he isn’t the burden he seems to think he is.

But I can’t find the right way to say it, and I am afraid of making it worse or shattering whatever delicate thing we have.

He takes a shaky breath, his hands running through his hair, frustration fighting for dominance in his expression.

“I’ve spent a long time learning how to navigate it,” he continues.

“How to make the hard choices quickly. Cleanly.” His jaw tightens, just enough to notice.

“Having something to care about, someone to care about, makes that harder.”

The ocean surges before pulling back.

His jaw tightens. “I’ve built my life around risks, knowing that I have nothing but my own life to lose, and willing to die for my cause.

” His eyes lift then, finding mine. “But now, I do have something precious to lose. You have changed the way I see the world, and the thought of losing you scares the hell out of me.”

I can’t look away. This is the truth of who he is, the mess, the fear, the darkness he has carried with him for so long. More than that, it’s the male who let me in, despite himself. It is the male who took a risk.

I step closer, the distance between us seemingly impossible to bridge.

My heart is beating so loud in my chest that I can barely hear anything else.

“You’re not alone in this,” I whisper, my voice shaking with the weight of my own vulnerability.

“I’m not . . . I’m not perfect, and I don’t have the answers.

But I’m here with you.” Without thinking, I reach out, my fingers gently brushing his arm.

His gaze flickers down to where our skin touches, as though the contact is enough to steady us both. I can feel his breath hitch as though the gesture means something more than either of us has the courage to say.

“I don’t know what I’m doing here,” I whisper, my voice trembling. “But right now . . . right here . . . with you . . .” I trail off, my chest tightening with emotions I still don’t fully understand yet can no longer hide.

He flinches slightly, like the words have struck him in some deep, untold place. “What if you regret it? What if you wake up one day and realize that I’m not who you thought I was?” His voice cracks, a raw, jagged sound.

His eyes soften, and for the first time, I recognize the look in his eyes, the pain of everything he carries.

Not just the burden of what he’s done, but the ache of someone who has been lost for so long, never allowing himself the chance to heal.

His hand reaches out slowly, resting on my cheek with a subtle gentleness.

“I’m not afraid of you,” I insist, my voice coming out steadier than I feel.

For a long moment, we just stand there, not pushing for words we aren’t ready to say.

His eyes search mine, and I can see it now, the depth of everything he has been running from, the fear, the pain, the loneliness that has been a constant companion, all of it lies bare in his gaze.

Suddenly, I get it.

I get him.

See him for everything he is, the real him. The man beneath the mask, in some ways, feels like a reflection of myself.

He steps closer, his face inches from mine. “I don’t know how to be what you need,” he whispers, a rare vulnerability in his words. “There is something broken inside me.” His voice comes out broken and pleading.

All I want, all I need, is for him to be real with me. For us to share this brokenness, this mess, and make something raw and true out of it, together. “I don’t need you to fix anything,” I say softly. “I just need you to be here. With me. Like this.”

His eyes soften, his body relaxing slightly at my words, as if the weight he carries has lightened just a little. His hand trembles as he reaches for me, cupping my cheek. The touch is tentative at first, as though he isn’t sure if he is allowed to.

But when I don’t pull away, when I lean into the warmth of his touch, he seems to breathe a little easier. “I don’t want to lose you,” he murmurs, his voice thick with emotion.

“You won’t,” I whisper back, closing my eyes for a moment as the overwhelming feeling of connection washes over me. "I’m not going anywhere.”

In that quiet moment, standing there with the ocean at our backs and the world seeming to hold its breath, I realize that we have both just taken a leap.

We are two broken people, two lost souls, and yet we have found something in each other, something fragile, something beautiful, something worth holding onto, even if we don’t know how to make sense of it yet.

He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t need to. Instead, he simply wraps his arms around me, drawing me into his chest with a quiet tenderness that leaves me breathless.

It isn’t the kind of touch that is driven by need or desire, but something deeper, an understanding that speaks volumes without a single word.

His arms feel like my refuge, holding me in a way that makes the world outside of us disappear.

I let go completely, letting my body relax into his warmth, my hands instinctively gripping the fabric of his shirt.

There is no rush in his touch, no urgency.

He just simply holds me, his strength, his warmth, and a quiet reassurance that he is here with me for this moment, offering a small reprieve from the chaos of the world, past and future.

I can hear the steady beat of his heart against my cheek, a soft rhythm that soothes something deep inside me.

He pulls back just enough to tilt my chin upward.

In his eyes is a depth of feeling that he isn’t afraid to show.

He isn’t just holding me physically anymore.

He is letting me see him, fully and completely.

The way his gaze lingers on my face, the subtle tremble in his touch as he gently lifts his hand to my chin, his fingers brushing softly across my skin, savoring the closeness we have found.

He kisses the top of my head. A gesture so tender, so full of warmth, that it feels like a promise.

There is no burning passion, no overwhelming heat between us, just a quiet, intimate connection that surpasses everything else.

The kind of kiss that speaks of trust, of understanding, of unspoken emotions that neither of us can quite articulate, but both feel so deeply.

The quiet of the world around us, the distant crash of waves, the soft wind in the air seem to pause for just a moment, as though even nature is holding its breath.

It isn’t about needing anything from one another.

It is about just being here, together, as we are.

Intimacy in its purest form, silent, unspoken, yet more powerful than anything physical could ever be.

I rest my head against his chest, feeling the rhythm of his heartbeat, and in that stillness, I understand that this is everything. There is no need to say anything else. He has already shown me, with his touch, with his presence, that this is real. More than anything else, it is enough.
