Chapter 39

Every inch of my body feels nothing but pain as I groan awake. I blink my eyes open but there’s nothing but complete darkness around me.

Where am I?

Fear slams into me when I realize my body is upright, my arms and legs cuffed. I move and hear the familiar jingle of chains.

I must be tied to something. Panic and fear try to overwhelm me, but I shove it down and try to figure out how I can get out of here.

I try to move, to see how much wiggle room I have, but the cuffs dig into my wrists and ankles making me gasp as sharp bolts of electric pain shoot through my body.

The pain slowly recedes just as the sound of something moving around me makes me pause.

“Who’s there?” I ask as footsteps slowly move closer to me. It’s still too dark around me to see who it is.

“Don’t worry,” a familiar voice says. “You’ll see in a moment.”

“What do you mean, I’ll—” the darkness from my vision fades as the pain in my body slowly disappears leaving me feel numb.

I blink against the light above and my eyes burn from the harsh light. But it looks like a natural light. Not something that can be turned on and off.

So why couldn’t I see a moment ago…

I blink again and stare at the light above, my gaze following the length of the dark cave walls to the spot where I’m chained up.

I didn’t see any of this a moment ago—like I was blind. At least for a moment.

I hear another footstep and look to the side as shock and dread slam into me and I stare down at a familiar face.

“Hello, Sena,” my old body says with a little smirk. “It’s time for little switch.”
