CHAPTER 34 #3

What!? Then what was attacking us? I ran through the maze of hallways and burst through the garden doors.

Servants were running towards the manor just as the warning bells chimed.

I froze in my tracks, and horror washed over me.

A servant lay on the ground at the edge of the garden, in a puddle of their own blood, as something was hunched over them, pulling what looked to be strands of intestines from a gaping wound in their stomach.

Nausea rolled through me in waves, but now was not the time to vomit.

The head of the creature snapped up at me, and blood dripped from its mouth as a piece of what I could only assume was human flesh hung from its bottom teeth.

It growled at me, and blood sprayed from between its teeth.

To my horror and shock, a second head shot upwards beside it and snarled.

Fuck. There were two of them. Wait, realization slammed into me, both heads were attached to the same body.

Double fuck. Its skin was decaying, and maggots crawled through a patch in its ribs, as its claws dug into the dirt.

Swords up!

I didn’t hesitate and raised the swords in a defensive stance just as the creature lunged over the shredded remnants of a body and charged towards me.

I braced myself for impact, but it never came.

Instead, a black furry blur launched over me and tackled the beast mid-air!

Ulric! The air was filled with yelps, snarls, and growls!

I couldn’t even try to help; they were entangled and rolling around.

My heart was pounding and shattering as one of the heads had Ulric by the neck, and the other was biting away at his back.

Ulric let out a sharp yelp of pain. I had to do something!

I looked around to see if any guards were coming, but they were either preoccupied with other creatures or were ushering people into the manor.

Ulric let out another yelp, and blood began coating the fur on his neck, glistening in the sunlight.

The sight of it sent me into a frenzy; I’m not sure how or what it was, but power surged through my entire body.

This is going to hurt.

What?! But before I had time to react, a crushing weight spread through my body, sending sparks of electricity to every limb, finger, and toe.

I screamed in pain, but didn’t back down or surrender to it.

No, I couldn’t fall! I could do this! I could do this for Ulric!

The man who helped me more than once, even though he was a sarcastic asshole, I wouldn’t let this beast bring him down.

My hands started to shake as the pain coursed through my body.

I raised them slightly and looked down at them, as a dark mist began to bleed from them.

Faster, the shadowy mist twisted and turned into different shapes until, finally, three dark wolves of mist stood before me.

I didn’t have time to think; I just willed them to save Ulric, and the wolves began to move.

They were running and tumbling into the clouds of mist that covered the ground; one after another, they fell into the darkness, only to emerge again in their wolf form.

The beast that was attacking Ulric didn’t have a chance; my wolves attacked and tumbled the beast off him.

The wolves tore into the beast, shredding it to pieces; blood, fur, and chunks of meat fell to the ground in a pile, no longer resembling any living thing.

Once the beast was no more, the mist disappeared into the wind like it was never there.

I turned my attention to Ulric, who looked to me, then shook his body, spraying blood everywhere.

I ran over to him, “Are you okay?!” Checking his neck over to see if he was seriously injured, but thankfully, he was not; it looked like a flesh wound that would heal in time.

He replied with a low sniff, like a sneeze, and bounded off towards the manor, so I chased after him.

What was that?! I demanded from the voice.
