Chapter Nineteen #3

And as they climbed back into her Jeep and continued their journey deeper into the heart of the rainforest, surrounded by a tapestry of life around them, he felt the weight of the life-altering decision he was yet to make start to lift.

Here, amid ancient ferns and whispering leaves, the possibility of a new beginning didn’t seem so daunting anymore.

He imagined sharing moments like this with her, not as a visitor but as someone entwined in the fabric of her tropical lifestyle, someone who belonged within her captivating world, with her, supporting her, loving her for always.

The following day their adventure continued on to the crystal-clear waters surrounding the Great Barrier Reef.

The shades of blue stretched endlessly, seamlessly blending with the sky as it met with the unobstructed horizon.

Donning snorkels and fins, they plunged off the day-tripper boat and into the water where an explosion of colours greeted them.

Kaleidoscopic fish darted between myriad vivid corals that looked like living jewels, and a manta ray swam just near them.

There was so much splendour to see he didn’t know where to look.

The underwater ballet left him almost as breathless as Nyah often did, the marine ecosphere a reminder of life’s endless wonders and the possibilities that awaited if he dared to reach out for them.

Popping his head above water, he met with Nyah, and they bobbed among the other sightseers. ‘Isn’t it beautiful?’ Her voice bubbled through the water with excitement, her wide eyes shining behind her mask.

Caleb couldn’t help but agree, though his gaze was more focused on her now than on the underwater spectacle around them. She resembled a mermaid, with her hair floating around her face and her smile lighting up the depths of his soul.

After their day on the ocean, they returned to shore and wandered the relaxed streets of Cairns, especially the esplanade where Nyah loved to jog with Ragnar as her running partner.

All around them, the air was thick with mouth-watering scents of different cuisines—Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Indian, seafood, you name it and it was likely there, among all the eateries.

Caleb had no idea how anyone would pick if they weren’t in the know.

Lucky for him, his sweetheart was a local.

Nyah chose her local Italian favourite, Villa Romano—a restaurant that had stood the test of time with twenty-five years beneath its belt—and they sampled dishes infused with rich tomato flavours and plenty of garlic.

Enjoying a bottle of pinot gris, they shared stories between bites, each one adding another stitch to the embroidery of their growing connection.

The sun was finally dipping below the horizon by the time they’d filled their bellies to the brim, painting the sky vibrant shades of pink and orange.

Once Caleb paid the bill, much to Nyah’s playful annoyance, they found themselves strolling along the esplanade once again, side by side and hand in hand, back towards where she’d parked her Jeep.

Reaching the lookout point, where boats of every size bobbed along two jetties, they stopped to admire the view.

Lacing her arm into his, Nyah turned to him, her eyes searching his in the fading light. She seemed to hesitate, her kissable lips opening, then closing, as if she didn’t know whether she should say what was on the tip of her tongue.

‘What is it, Love?’ His smile was soft, an invitation for her to open up to him.

‘Could you see yourself here long term, Caleb?’ she asked ever so gently.

Before he rushed out a big hell yes , he paused, considering that he would not just be changing locations, but reshaping his entire identity.

As much as he wanted to dive into them , he had to be realistic, or risk ruining everything before they’d even had a chance to begin.

‘It gets harder every day to imagine being anywhere else,’ he confessed softly.

‘I really like hearing you say that.’ With the glimmer of a smile, she reached up and placed the softness of her hand against his cheek. ‘Because I really adore you, Caleb Hart.’

‘Glad to hear it.’ In her gentle touch, and her heartfelt words, he found the courage he’d been searching for.

‘Because I really adore you, too, Nyah Love.’ Standing here, in Cairns, with her by his side, he caught a glimpse of the life that awaited them—not without its challenges, but rich with the unbreakable bond of their love.

‘I’ve been contemplating,’ he began, his voice weaving through the sea salt-scented space between them, ‘our future together.’ He stole a breath, grounding himself further into the intimate moment.

‘And I want, no, need , to be wherever you are, Ny.’

Biting her bottom lip, she dropped her gaze and brought a hand to his, her fingertips now dancing over his knuckles.

‘I want you here too, so very much, but I also understand it’s a big move.

’ She looked back to him now, her eyes glistening.

‘I mean, you have your life and your work, back down south…’

‘Wildstone has been my home forever, yes, but it’s you that I need more than any of that,’ he interrupted, his voice filled with determination.

‘I can’t let another day pass by with this distance between us.

I want to fall asleep knowing you’re not just a phone call away but cuddled up beside me instead. ’

Her lips parted as though she struggled to find the words, as if she were caught within her own fears and desires. ‘I adore you for that, I truly do, but what about your career? And Hope?’

‘Hope wants me to be happy, and as for my job…’ His gaze drifted over her beautiful features to her stunning blue eyes.

‘I believe there could be a place for me at the Cairns police station; I just need to do a bit of asking around. And I’ll need to reapply, even though I’m qualified, because I’ll be changing territories. ’

‘Oh, that would be wonderful if it all falls into place.’ She jiggled happily on the spot, then halted, her happy expression marred by uncertainty. ‘But please promise me,’ she whispered, now vulnerable and tentative, ‘that this is what you truly want, and not just for me, but for yourself.’

‘Every fibre of my being knows that this is right,’ he assured her with conviction.

‘Oh, Caleb, this makes me so happy.’ Up on her tippy toes, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him. ‘I love you.’

‘I love you, too, beautiful,’ he replied with a skip and a dance in his heart.

With the decision settled firmly within him like an anchor, he instantly began picturing a future together.

When they returned back to her place, their love enveloped them in a warm embrace as they made their way through the door.

The air was thick with anticipation and desire, their hearts beating in sync as they moved towards the bedroom.

Then they stood there, facing each other, breathing each other in.

Losing himself in her, Caleb felt a surge of emotion wash over him as he took her hands in his, his touch gentle yet full of longing.

In that moment there was no past or future, only the present—a perfect communion of two souls intertwined in passion and affection.

Without a word, they began to undress each other, their actions speaking louder than any declaration of love could.

Skin on skin, they found solace in each other’s arms, their bodies moving together in a dance as old as time, each touch igniting a fire that blazed brighter still.

Tracing his fingertips over her spine, he memorised every inch of her as her hands roamed over his chest, her fingers leaving delicious trails of warmth.

Her smile was soft as she lingered, feeling the fast rhythm of his heart beneath her touch.

Not able to hold himself back any longer, he brought his lips to her, savouring the taste of her skin, the way she arched into his touch, the way her breath hitched with each caress.

Within this moment and into the next, nothing else mattered but the connection they shared and the fire burning between them.

The room quickly filled with the sound of their whispered confessions as their hands and lips explored, rediscovering every inch of each other.

Time seemed to stand still as they lost themselves in the intensity of their lovemaking, each sensation more exquisite than the last. This wasn’t simply a physical union but a declaration of their love, a celebration of all they had overcome to be together in this moment as they moved as one, lost in a world where only their undying love existed.

And the following morning, after hours spent making love then falling asleep in each other’s arms, he woke to find himself even more in love as he sat across the dining table from her.

With one foot up on her chair, her chin resting on her knee as she scrolled through her phone, his T-shirt on and her hair in disarray, she looked absolutely mesmerising.

‘Oh my gosh, look at this,’ she said excitedly, her phone screen glowing as she held it up to him.

‘There’s an opening at the Cairns station for a community liaison officer.

It would be the perfect way for you to get a foot in the door there, rather than having to reapply and go through all the motions again, don’t you think? ’

‘A community liaison officer, huh?’ Caleb mused, warmth spreading through his chest. ‘Building bridges, making a difference…yeah, I like it; it feels like the right fit.’ He really let it sink in as he nodded.

‘It would be a nice change, to not have so much on my plate as an officer chasing the bad guys for a while, while I settle into life up here.’

‘Great, then let’s make it happen,’ she encouraged, her support as steady as the ancient rainforest that cradled the seaside township.

One that he couldn’t wait to call home.

Enthusiastically, together, they mapped out their future, and how he’d navigate his move when he was ready, and with each passing moment his excitement grew.

‘Are you sure you’re ready for this massive change of pace, from a country township to more of a city feel?’ Nyah asked, optimism in her words. ‘Cairns might have a chillaxed kind of vibe on the surface, but it still has its fair share of delinquency.’

‘Yup, more than ever,’ he replied without hesitation, his heart swelling with certainty. ‘And I reckon, once we’ve finished our cuppas, how about we make a start on this new life together and go and plant Skye’s tree, along with the herb and tomato plants that I got you at Limberlost Nursery?’

‘Better still, let’s take our cuppas outside and do it right now,’ she said, leaping from her chair and holding her hand out to him. ‘Come on, follow me, my sexy man.’

Wrapping his hand in hers, he laughed as she led him out the back and to the spot they’d already chosen, with Ragnar in tow.

Picking up the young sapling, Caleb cradled it in his arms—a robust Illawarra flame tree, chosen for its resilience and vibrant red blossoms that would paint the backyard with brilliant colour once a year.

Grabbing the shovel, he dug deep enough to provide support to the Australian native’s roots for a lifetime.

Then, together, they lowered Skye’s tree into the prepared hollow, their movements synchronised by an unspoken rhythm honed through the past few months of heartache and hope intertwined.

Getting their hands dirty, they filled in the gap around the sapling with soil, each scoop of earth a tribute to Skye’s memory.

‘Maybe your dad might like to spread some of her ashes here?’ Caleb said gently.

‘Yeah, that might be nice, when he’s ready to part with some of her.’ Her smile was heartbreakingly sad. ‘When do you think it will blossom for the first time?’ she asked, her voice soft, barely rising above the whisper of surrounding leaves in the gentle breeze.

‘Next spring, I’m guessing,’ Caleb replied, his hand finding hers and their dirt-streaked fingers interlocking. ‘And when it does, it’ll light up this whole place.’ He envisioned the blaze of red amid the sea of green, a fiery tribute to a life stolen too soon but never forgotten.

Nyah nodded. ‘And when it drops its blanket of flowers, Skye will be everywhere.’

‘She is and will be,’ he responded with a tender squeeze of her hand. ‘Her spirit will live on through you, always, Ny.’

‘You really are the sweetest man I’ve ever met, Caleb Hart.’ Nyah’s eyes shone with affection. ‘Now come on, let’s go and plant the rest of our seedlings, and make us a garden we can eat from.’

‘Sounds like a plan.’ They gathered the pots and carried them to the sunny spot Caleb had already prepared.

‘I’m already loving our life, Caleb, so much.’ Reaching out to touch the leaves of the budding basil, Nyah’s fingers mirrored the gentle caress she always gave to his heart. ‘I can only imagine how special it will be when we are living together.’

‘I can’t wait to be here with you, in our forever home.’ Pulling her into his arms, he kissed her. ‘Now come on, fellow green thumb, let’s do this.’

They both sank to their knees and enjoyed getting their hands even dirtier as their two hearts continued to beat in perfect harmony.

They got lost in their own little world while the sky above them transformed into a canvas of bright mid-morning sunshine untainted by the listless clouds that had greeted them earlier on.

And as the day continued to unfurl, their story continued to grow under the twinkling constellations they’d gazed at from their camp chairs in Wildstone, and now watched in the tropical embrace of Cairns.
