Chapter Twenty-Two #2

Hope went first, her forever friend’s eyes glued to Vance— and love was there all along , she thought with a gentle smile.

Then it was her turn. With every step, Nyah felt the weight of her father’s arm supporting her, a constant presence that had never faltered throughout her life.

Her heart throbbed with faith and excitement as they made their way towards Caleb, her rock, her best friend, her soulmate.

The faces of their loved ones blurred into a warm backdrop as her gaze found his and locked.

And in that moment, surrounded by the gentle melodies of the waves and the whispering wind through the palms, her heart brimmed with an undying love like no other she’d ever felt before.

When she reached the flower archway Hope and Rae had made, and her dad ever so tenderly passed the hand he was holding over to Caleb, she had to keep her brimming emotions in check as the world receded until there was nothing but the two of them, a single entity standing at the precipice of forever.

The celebrant’s voice as he welcomed everyone, a soft cadence that seemed to harmonise with the natural melodies of the beach, brought Nyah back to the present.

Caleb’s hands continued to hold hers, the warmth and strength of his gentle grasp grounding her.

The words of commitment and promise began to flow between them, wrapping them in a cocoon of love and devotion.

Then, in what felt like a blink of an eye, it was time for their vows.

‘Today, my beautiful Ny,’ Caleb began, his voice steady, ‘I give you not just my promise of forever after all, but my past, present and future, too.’ His vows flowed like the gentle tide lapping at the shore, each word a testament to the depth of his commitment.

‘In your eyes, I found my truth. In your touch, I found my home.’ His gaze never wavered from hers as he spoke, his words weaving emotions that danced in the ocean breeze.

‘You’re the light that guides me through the darkness, the strength that lifts me when I fall.

With you by my side, I am whole. And I vow to spend every moment cherishing and protecting what we have built together, for the rest of our lives. ’

Nyah listened with teary eyes and a floating heart, then it was her turn.

‘In your eyes, I’ve found my forever home.

And in your heart, I’ve found the deepest, richest love imaginable.

I promise to stand by you through every storm, to skip through the sunny days holding your hand nice and tight, and to be your shelter in times of need.

’ Her voice filled with even more sincerity and love.

‘With you, Caleb Hart, I’ve found the courage to face my past and embrace our future.

I promise to cherish you, to support you, and to love you unconditionally for all the days of my life.

And hopefully, into the next, because I never want to imagine a life without you. ’

Their hands joined in an unspoken covenant as tangible as the rings they exchanged—a symbol of eternity, as ceaseless as the sun-filled horizon.

‘Now,’ the celebrant smiled warmly at them, ‘by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife.’

Cheers erupted from their loved ones as Caleb leant in to capture Nyah’s lips in a tender kiss.

Their lips spoke the language of souls entwined, a silent oath to weather all storms together and to love each other until their dying days.

As applause rippled through the air, they turned, hand in hand, as husband and wife, walking back through the aisle that had borne witness to their union.

And as the sun dipped lower while they hugged and laughed and relished the congratulations of friends and family, it cast a warm, golden glow over the congregation that now moved towards the reception at Nu Nu, Nyah couldn’t have been any happier if she’d tried.

The oceanside restaurant’s al fresco setting welcomed the guests as Nyah, Caleb, Hope and Vance went to get photos taken.

Lanterns swayed gently above tables adorned with native blooms, the colours of the approaching sunset captured in their petals.

The aroma of local seafood and exotic spices promised a feast that would linger on the palate as long as the memories of this day stayed in their hearts.

And as dusk eventually settled in for the start of the festive evening, casting a magical twilight glow over the ocean, the clinking of glasses underscored laughter and soft chatter as Caleb and Nyah made their entrance.

Each table bore the name of a place that had been woven into the fabric of their story—Wildstone, Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Daintree and Kuranda Tropical Rainforest. And for Nyah and Caleb, they were more than mere words.

Each place was a milestone on the map of their journey, leading them here, to this first night of their collective tomorrow.

And as the evening began to unfold, the space between them shrank to nothingness.

This was their beginning, the prelude to a life written in the stars, bound by the earth and celebrated by the sea.

The warm, balmy air carried the scent of salt and sea foam, creating a tranquil atmosphere for the celebration.

Laughter echoed through the crowd, blending with the soft clinking of cutlery on fine china.

The mouth-watering aroma of grilled barramundi, lemon myrtle and roasted bush tomatoes filled the air, the feast seeming to have been laid out by Mother Nature herself with its perfect blend of flavours and colours.

Glasses were raised in toasts, more hearty laughter rang out like bells in the night, and then it was Caleb’s turn to stand at the front, his hand finding Nyah’s in a tender embrace, their fingers intertwining like roots beneath the soil.

The gathering of family and friends fell into a hushed stillness as Caleb’s voice, smooth as a soothing tide, washed over them.

As he delivered his speech, filled with thank-yous and reminders of how much he loved his wife, Nyah’s eyes sparkled like the stars above as she met his gaze, their love palpable to all watching this shared moment.

‘And last but not least, there’s one more thing I want to tell you all.’ Caleb paused and looked to Nyah, his smile beaming.

A single breath held in her chest before the announcement, and she nodded, matching his smile.

‘We’re going to be parents.’ The words were simple yet carried the weight and emotion of a thousand lifetimes with the promise of a new life to love.

An audible gasp rose from the crowd before people erupted into cheers and applause.

Faces lit up with pure bliss, as if each heart had grown wings.

People rushed forward, hugs were exchanged, tears of joy fell, and cries of delight sounded, binding all their lives together in this celebration.

And as her beaming dad brought her within his strong, loving arms, and voices echoed around them, full of raw and genuine happiness, wrapped up within this bubble of absolute happiness, Nyah could see that their love had expanded beyond themselves.

Tears glistened in Rae’s eyes as she gathered Nyah from her dad and held her close, while Hope enveloped her in a warm embrace filled with delighted elation.

Their first dance to their chosen Hank Williams song was a visual echo of the vows they’d shared before their loved ones.

As they danced slowly under the starry sky, their bodies swaying in perfect harmony to the melodic love song, it was clear that they’d found true happiness in each other’s arms. In Caleb’s embrace she felt safe and loved, and knowing she was to be the mother of his child, it was all she could do not to lift from the ground and float towards the blanket of stars above.

She knew Caleb’s heart was forever aligned with hers, a compass always pointing towards his true north.

Their love was a beacon for all to see, shining bright and unwavering in the darkness, always and forevermore.

Beneath the star-studded sky and a luminous moon, the night unfurled like a delicate flower.

Its petals held within them an abundance of sweet memories, laughter that would echo for years to come, and a unity that now bound Nyah and Caleb together as one.

For them, this was more than just a wedding reception—it was a poignant reminder of the beauty of life and a declaration that even in the midst of loss and heartache, redemption could bloom fiercely and beautifully.

As the lustrous orb of the moon slowly ascended higher into the sky, its shimmering silver glow cast a soft light upon the faces of all who were gathered there.

By Caleb’s side, Nyah stood in awe, surrounded by loved ones, knowing that their journey ahead would not be travelled alone.

It was a path lined with unwavering love and support from every soul who stood with them on this special night—and their baby was the beginning of their legacy that would remain enduring for generations to come.

Reaching up on her tippy toes, Nyah leant across and whispered into Caleb’s ear. ‘Can we escape for a few minutes, my love?’

‘Sounds perfect.’ Taking her hand, he led her into the shadows, towards the lapping ocean.

Hand in hand, he casually led Nyah along the shoreline in companionable silence.

The salty breeze tousled his sandy hair and played with her dark curls, as if the ocean itself was reaching out to congratulate them.

The rhythmic splash of waves against the shore provided a soothing backdrop to their thoughts, a symphony of nature that seemed to speak directly to their souls.

They paused at the water’s edge, and the gentle hum of retreating waves mingled with distant sounds of laughter and music from their reception, the restaurant now just a warm glow against the canvas of the night.

Nyah’s bright blue eyes reflected the moon’s silver light, her gaze deep and fathomless as she looked out over the Coral Sea.

Sighing softly, she leant into Caleb, her head finding its rightful place against his shoulder.

His arm lifted to wrap around her in a protective circle that held all her complexities, fears, boundless love and irrepressible spirit.

In the tranquil stillness of this magical moment, they began to speak of the child they’d welcome in six months’ time—a baby conceived in love and a beacon of hope amid the shadows of past sorrow.

‘If it’s a boy, I reckon Aiden, or Jordan, or maybe even Byron.’ Nyah looked for reactions to the names she’d been thinking about that morning, when she woke.

‘I actually like them all.’ Caleb’s smile reflected his glowing heart. ‘And if it’s a girl, are we in agreement with the one name?’

‘Most definitely.’ She nodded, with her heart full.

‘Skye Hart,’ Caleb whispered, his voice carrying nothing but tenderness.

‘Skye Hart,’ Nyah echoed, her voice melodic and resolute.

The name lingered between them, imbued with the weight of memory and the lightness of joy.

Filled with meaning and significance, it was a tribute to the sweetest soul who’d slipped away way too soon, but whose essence would forever be intertwined with their own.

And in it lay the courage to face old demons and the strength to forge a path not marred by grief but illuminated by their unbreakable bond and unconditional love for each other.

As they remained at the water’s edge for a little longer, with the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out before them, Nyah let her imagination run wild.

She could almost hear the sweet sound of laughter echoing through their home, and the tiny feet pitter-pattering on the garden path that wound within their beloved garden, filled to the brim with healthy food.

She could see a little girl with her mother’s tangle of curls and her father’s charming grin, filling their hearts with warmth and love.

And she could picture a boy, as bold and daring as his father, with so much love in his heart.

Caleb would be starting his new role as a police officer at the Cairns station after their ten-day honeymoon in dreamy Hawaii, and her part-time shifts at school allowed her the time to write her contracted children’s stories, ones that would guide kids through the tough complexities of life.

Everything had fallen into place. Their lives were forever entwined, and their hearts were forever united, overflowing with emotion for what was to come.

She knew that life would throw challenges their way, unpredictable storms that might threaten to tear them apart, but as she gazed into the moonlit horizon, she also understood that together, they were unbreakable.

They’d most certainly proven that.

And in the tranquil embrace of the night, with their hearts full and spirits soaring, she comprehended the meaning of true love knowing no bounds.

Because theirs was one that would outlive them.

From this life, and into the next.

She was sure of it.
