Chapter 27
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
-Thalia-
The room is thick with the lingering scent of sweat and the intensity of our shared passion, the sheets twisted around us like a physical testament to everything we just poured into each other.
My body thrums with that sweet ache that follows a total surrender to desire, every limit pushed and then obliterated.
Yet, it’s the stillness that wraps around us now, heavy and charged, that leaves me feeling both elated and vulnerable.
Xander remains motionless for a moment longer, his form hovering above me, breaths ragged and disheveled. His forehead presses gently against mine, grounding me. I’m acutely aware of the tension that still courses through his muscles.
His hands, once fierce and commanding, now glide softly down my arms, brushing away strands of damp hair that cling to my flushed face.
“You okay?” he whispers, his voice a low rumble infused with concern. It feels like more than just a question; it’s a raw invitation to lay bare my heart. I nod, words caught in my throat, too tight and filled with all that has just transpired between us.
My pulse hasn’t settled yet. It beats like a frantic warning against my ribs, reminding me that vulnerability feels a lot like standing barefoot on broken glass.
I’m still adjusting to being seen so completely.
Xander’s fingers trace slow patterns over my skin, and each pass leaves a trail of warmth that spreads through my chest like wildfire.
I’m not used to someone handling me with reverence.
Damian grabbed.
Xander holds.
There’s a difference so sharp it almost hurts.
Sometimes my body reacts before my brain catches up.
A hand near my wrist, someone walking too close behind me, the scrape of a heavy boot against tile, and suddenly, I’m back inside that nightmare I never asked to enter.
With Xander, I don’t jolt. I don’t flinch.
My nervous system recognizes him faster than my mind does. Safety. Warmth. The absence of threat.
He traces down my arm slowly, like he’s mapping constellations into my skin. His touch isn’t a demand. It’s a question.
Can I?
I realize no one has ever asked before.
Everyone else reached. Took. Claimed.
Xander waits, even when desire flickers in his eyes like a lit fuse. His restraint is a language all on its own, gentler than words, louder than promises. He could shatter every wall I have left, but instead, he holds them steady while I decide if I’m ready to let them crumble.
This is what it means to be held.
Not trapped.
Held.
And the terrifying part?
I’m starting to want it.
To want him.
To choose softness without bracing for pain.
“I don’t deserve you,” I whisper before I can stop myself.
His thumb lifts my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. “Thalia. Look at me.”
I do.
And there’s no judgment there. No disappointment. Only devotion, fierce and consuming.
“You don’t earn me,” he murmurs. “You match me.”
Match him.
The words echo like thunder rolling through the hollow place in my chest that I didn’t realize still existed. I always thought relationships were about owing, about proving your worth so the other person doesn’t leave.
But Xander… he hands power back to me without even knowing he’s doing it.
“I don’t match you,” I whisper, voice trembling before I can catch it. “You’re stronger.”
He shakes his head slowly, like I’m missing something obvious. “Strength isn’t about never breaking. It’s about what you do after.”
I swallow hard.
“What if I break again?”
“Then I’ll be there while you put yourself back together.”
Not fix me.
Not rescue me.
Be there.
My throat tightens. “You make it sound so easy.”
“It’s not,” he replies. “But you’re worth the work.”
“I am now.” There’s a flicker of something deep in his eyes, an emotion that makes my chest squeeze in an all-too-familiar way.
His forehead presses to mine, grounding me. No grand speeches, no declarations dripping with empty promise, just quiet conviction.
Maybe love isn’t supposed to feel like a fight for survival.
Maybe it can feel like a homecoming.
The words sink into me with the slow ache of healing, raw but necessary. I didn’t know affection could feel like strength rather than weakness. I didn’t know being held could feel like being chosen.
My fingertips find their way to his jaw, tracing the evidence of my earlier enthusiasm—those scratch marks, angry but somehow familiar.
With a gentle shift, he rolls us onto our sides, pulling me close and tucking me against his chest. The heat radiating off him is intoxicating, and I relish in the way his heart beats steadily beneath my ear, a rhythm that grounds me like nothing else.
Silence envelops us for what feels like an eternity as his fingers continue their slow, soothing dance along my back, and I breathe in the intoxicating mix of his scent—a blend of sweat, warmth, and something uniquely him.
The remnants of our fight still linger in the air like smoke, but entwined within that tension is an undeniable fire, the spark that ignites everything between us.
I listen to the sound of his breathing. The opposite of chaos. The opposite of everything I knew. Sometimes, when I can’t sleep, I put my ear to his chest and count the beats.
One for safety.
Two for peace.
Three because I’m still here.
Xander traces lazy shapes on my spine. Circles. Lines. Nothing that follows a pattern, nothing that expects me to decode it.
“You overthink,” he whispers.
“How do you know?”
“You hold your breath when you’re afraid.”
“I’m not afraid.”
“You’re terrified.”
The denial dies on my tongue.
He knows me too well.
Finally, he breaks the stillness with a confession that spills from his lips like a secret held too long. “I hate when we fight. But I love… us. Even when it’s messy. Especially when it’s messy.”
A smile blooms on my lips despite the echoes of our anger, and I lean in, pressing a tender kiss to the warmth of his chest. “We’re a mess. But we’re our mess.”
The sound of his laughter, deep, warm, and genuine, fills the space between us, and it brings with it a lightness I didn’t realize we needed.
Tilting my chin up, he kisses me again, this time softer, the urgency giving way to something deeper. There’s no rush, no anger, just a gentle reminder that we’re rebuilding the pieces that our shouting threatened to scatter.
“I’ve got you,” he murmurs against my lips, and the conviction in his voice wraps around me like a promise. “Always. No matter what we’re up against, even if it’s each other.”
-Xander-
The room feels heavier now, laden with the weight of everything we’ve just experienced: our fight, the fire that ignited between us, and the raw way we consumed one another until all that remained were ragged breaths and trembling bodies.
Thalia lies curled against me, her skin warm and slick, her chest rising and falling rapidly against mine.
I remain still for a moment, my arms wrapped around her as if she might slip away if I dare to loosen my grip.
My body is spent, but my thoughts are still tangled in the echoes of our argument, the sharpness of her voice as she pleaded for me to see her strength.
She believes I overlook those aspects of her, but she has no idea just how deeply I truly see her.
Pressing my forehead against hers, I seek to quell the storm of emotions brewing within me. “If I could go back,” I murmur into her hair, “to before you ever met him, I would tear the world apart to get to you sooner.”
Thalia lifts her head slightly, eyes searching mine. “You saying that doesn’t fix anything.”
“I know.”
“It doesn’t erase what happened.”
“I know that too.”
She takes a breath like she’s forcing oxygen into lungs that forgot how to expand. “But it matters.”
“I’d burn down every version of the world where you’re hurt.”
Her lips twitch upward. “You always go straight to arson.”
“For you?” I shrug. “Absolutely.”
She laughs, a small sound, but it’s real. “You can’t save me from everything.”
“I don’t want to save you,” I admit. “I just want you safe.”
A fragile understanding settles between us.
She shifts slightly, forehead brushing my collarbone. “Earlier might not have saved me,” she says quietly. “It just would’ve changed how I got here.”
Her resilience knocks the breath out of me. She doesn’t see how extraordinary she is. She doesn’t understand the miracle of still choosing softness when cruelty tried to turn her into something cold.
“You are the strongest person I know,” I say.
And I mean it with every scarred part of my soul.
It feels like she was always meant to occupy this perfect space beside me.
My hand instinctively glides along her back in a soothing stroke, keeping her close and cocooned in safety.
I’d fight her a thousand times over if it meant I could hold her like this afterward, even when the act of it threatens to tear us apart.
Her words resonate in my mind. I want to see her strong and independent. Maybe she’s right; she does need to stand on her own sometimes. But I can’t shake the instinct to protect her, to be her shield against the world.
I reach for her chin, tilting it up, and lean in for another kiss, this one distinctly different from the heat of our prior encounter.
A gentler kiss; a tender embrace without the fraying edges of anger.
It speaks of love, of healing. She is my world, and I would let everything else burn if it meant keeping her safe in my arms.
Journal Entry
-Thalia-
It’s curious how love can manifest as both the most potent weapon and the gentlest caress simultaneously.
Tonight served as a poignant reminder of that duality.
Xander and I clashed in a way that felt visceral.
Raw. This wasn’t a typical disagreement.
We were two warriors, voices raised and hearts pounding, each of us unwilling to back down, our positions fortified like we were preparing for battle.
Xander seems oblivious to the depth of my struggle, the fierce need I harbor to demonstrate my strength and capability to navigate this world on my own terms. He perceives my fortitude as something delicate, akin to glass that might shatter at any moment.
But I have endured broken pieces before; I am not fragile like glass.
I am fire—intense, consuming, and capable of rising from the ashes.
And yet, in a twist that contradicts my fierce exterior, when his arms enveloped me after our tumultuous exchange, when I heard the slight crack in his voice as he softly asked if I was okay, all my bravado melted away.
I can scream at him, raging to assert my independence, but the truth is, I yearn for the safety of feeling his heartbeat against my ear, a sound that whispers comfort.
I struggle with the thought that needing him might be synonymous with weakness, even when I know, deep down, that it isn’t.
I want both. The recognition of my strength and the solace of being held when my defenses crumble. Is that too much to dare to ask?
He reassures me with promises of unwavering support that he will be there for me through it all.
A part of me longs to accept those words without hesitation.
Another voice within me cautions that ‘always’ can be a fragile promise, one that can vanish or be torn away, just like so many other precious things in my life.
But perhaps true strength isn’t about choosing one path over the other.
Maybe it lies in the acceptance of wanting and needing both.
I am beginning to grasp that loving him doesn’t diminish my strength; it simply makes me human.
Sometimes I wonder if healing is a straight line or a battlefield. Maybe it’s both. Maybe every sunrise is just a truce with the darkness, and every night is another chance to remember I survived it.
Xander doesn’t tiptoe around my trauma; he walks into it like he’s clearing debris. But he also knows when to step back, when to let me speak, when to let me feel.
He never says ‘just move on.’
He never makes me apologize for the scars that still ache.
I think love is less about being saved and more about being believed.
With him, I am believed. Maybe that’s why I write about him here, in the privacy of words I never intend to show him. Because speaking these things out loud feels dangerous. Vulnerable. Permanent.
But writing them?
That feels like claiming something quietly.
