“Inever wanted the crown, Scarlett,” he whispered.

“I wanted the girl who burned like fire and kissed like prophecy. I wanted you in my bed, in my war, in my arms when the rest of the world fell apart. No matter how much I try to dismiss any possibility of you — everything always just comes back to you.”

Her voice came out softer than she had meant. “You’re too late.”

“I am not too late,” he said bitterly. “Because you let them see what I ran from. You let them touch what I should’ve fought for. So now, I’m not asking for time. I'm taking it.”
