Chapter Twenty-Nine #2
I spun at the door and stared at him. “Do you know what happens when a person is both wolf and Lycan, Vince?” My question confused him; it seemed. He stared up at my wolfman face, and I watched as he tried to figure it out.
“They obviously have a lot of power.” I nodded.
I looked at Rowan. How do I shift out of this form?
His smile was a flash. It was there and then gone. His voice floated into my mind and caressed me. Like any other shift. You just have to allow Nix to recede. Once we became mated, Nix unlocked this form, it will be easier and easier to shift into. She can choose as she wants.
Nix pulled back. This will become handy in training.
“We do…but there is another fact that is very unknown.” Megan pushed forward, and I felt my skin ripple. I stared at his face as I shrank. My six foot seven frame shrank until I was in Megan’s shifted form.
“No.” He trembled as he stared at me.
“Oh, yes.” Megan shook out her fur.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me.” Brandon snarled.
Megan turned and lifted a brow. “Not at all. I know it is so hard to believe that I wasn’t as stupid as you thought I was, but here we are.”
Shannon turned to look at Brandon. “What?” Brandon fumed for a second and then laughed. “What are you laughing at?”
“Because we were playing checkers while Amy was playing chess. She was always steps ahead.” Brandon flung his arm out. “We caught this wolf watching as we tried to drain one kid. We kept her in the cells here. She got away.”
“Not just that…” I shifted back to my human body.
“You taunted me…remember. You came in daily to torture me mentally. All because?” I turned to Vince.
“Because your father had become obsessed with my wolf form.” I tilted my head.
“You were so disgusted with me.” I turned back to Brandon.
“Which is actually hilarious…since Megan, my wolf, was your fated mate.”
The words hung there. “What? No, I was mated to Nix.”
I laughed. “No. Never. You were too weak to have been mated to Nix. Rowan was always Nix’s fated mate. He became Megan’s second-chance mate. Thankfully, thankfully the Goddess always had a plan. But you were her fated mate.”
He grimaced in disgust. Vince lifted an eyebrow. “She was a Gamma. I felt her power.”
I nodded. “That she is. Nix is my Alpha. But it shows something, doesn’t it?”
“What?” He looked confused.
“Alphas are mated to someone similar in rank. So that they can support each other. Brandon mated a Gamma…and chose someone unranked.” I turned to face Brandon.
“It just shows how weak he truly is. He couldn’t even match a Beta.
Morgan would have won easily. If he had gotten his way and had a boy with my mom.
The Oakenfang pack would have been overtaken.
” I turned back to the door. “But that doesn’t matter anymore.
” I grabbed the handle and opened it. I stepped in, and the scent hit me first. Old blood, my blood, hit me in a wave. Burned flesh. Urine.
Everyone filed in. My friends seemed to shiver as the scents washed over them, but Rowan’s growl filled the room when he stepped in. “This is where they held you?” He looked down the hallway of cells. “Why didn’t I notice this place until we were right outside?”
I nodded as I grabbed the keys from the wall.
“This place is spelled. No one really looks this way until they’re brought here.
Otherwise, your gaze skips it.” I shrugged.
“When I was in here, I was pissed. But now it serves a purpose.” I went down the line and unlocked every cell.
Then I turned to the group. “Welcome to your new home.”
I pushed the guards into a few of the cells.
I did them in pairs, which thankfully worked since there were only a few left alive after the fighting.
Then Morgan and Vince in one, and then Brandon and Shannon in the last one.
I slammed the last cell closed, and Shannon charged the door, the silver bars burning her flesh, and she shrieked. “You can’t be fucking serious.”
I grinned. “Oh, I am. I endured it…so can you.” Shannon’s face snarled but then, like a light switch, it changed to a grin. Then she started laughing. “What is so funny?”
She came back to the front of the cell. “You can lock us away all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that your father probably died in those caves, and your mother is sitting at a cabin being attacked by the rest of the brotherhood. And you have been wasting your time here.”
Her words hit exactly as she had planned.
I turned and sprinted from the cells with her laughter following me.
My mind was spinning, Garith’s words so easily forgotten in the moment, but now crystalized in my mind.
They were attacking the cabin. My mom, my pup.
I let out a growl that built in my throat as my mind went through worst-case scenarios.
Please don’t let them be hurt. I prayed to the Moon Goddess as I ran. Rowan and the girls trailed after me. I headed towards the forest, but it was Toya’s voice that cut through my panic. “Amy.” She screamed in a way that had my legs stumbling, and the spiral I was in froze.
I stopped instantly, and my friends crowded around me. “What?”
Toya stepped in front of me. “You are panicking, and I understand. Your mom and your pup are in that cabin.” Her words mimicked my own thoughts just seconds before.
I felt my body tense to keep running, but her hand shot out.
“But you aren’t thinking clearly. We need a plan.
A way to get there.” I stared at the trees for a second before I pivoted and started running toward the pack house, and the streets beyond it.
“Amy!” She called after me, but I kept running. I was stupid.
“Where are you going?” Rowan caught up to me.
“To my closet.” He stumbled a step but followed me without question.
I ran to the house I used to live in and slammed my power outward, shattering the spells I had in place as I barreled through the door. I ran up the stairs, shattering the next spell. Rowan followed me, trusting me. “Shouldn’t we be getting into a car or something?”
Toya laughed behind him. “Or something.” I ripped the closest door open and ran to the back of the closest.
I slammed the last door open and stepped into darkness.
I heard a few sniffles as I stumbled through the closest and opened the far door.
Light swept through the closest at the cabin, and Carly and Abby screamed.
I whirled to find the two pups hidden behind my clothes.
“Baby girl?” I dropped to the ground and pushed the clothes away from the two shivering pups. “What’s wrong?”
Carly launched herself into my arms. Abby followed behind her. I was wrapped in four tiny arms as they cried. “They surrounded the cabin. Nana Ainsley told us to hide up here.”
I pulled back and wiped their faces. “You are okay? Stay here. Close the doors, and if anyone comes near here that isn’t us, go through the door and shut it. Do you understand?”
Carly nodded and slid her back against the wall again. Abby hiccuped as she stared at me. “Please save my mommy and daddy.”
“What do you mean, sweetheart? They should be safe in the cabin.” I looked at everyone before my eyes landed on Carly.
Her eyes were white, and I knew she was having a vision.
“You must hurry. The world is about to break. If you can’t defeat the darkness and weave anew, then all is lost. The Shaman is vulnerable, and if she is found before you are ready, then all wolfkind will be at the precipice of extinction.
The humans circle, ready to follow the clues.
Be wary of death wrapped in love.” Her eyes cleared, and a single tear escaped.
“Mama Amy. I’m scared.” I pulled her back to me and hugged her.
“It’s going to be okay, baby girl. I got you.
” I pulled back so I could run my hand through her hair.
“Do you believe me?” Carly nodded. I turned to Abby.
“I promise I will do everything I can to make sure that everyone is safe. Okay?” Abby wiped the tears streaming down her face, and she gave me a tight nod.
“Okay. Get back against the wall and remember what I said. If anyone that isn’t us, or anyone from the cabin comes up here, you run, okay?
” I kissed both of them. “As long as I am alive, I will find you.” I took a second to cast a tracking spell on them both.
“This is temporary, but I promise after all of this is done. I will make something more permanent. I will always find you.” Worry pooled in my stomach as I stood and pulled the clothes back over them.
I turned and everyone followed me down the stairs. I was halfway down the stairs when I felt it. I screamed as my body felt as if it was being ripped apart, and fell the rest of the way down the stairs.
“Amy!” I slammed into the front door as snarls reached my ears. Rowan rushed to my side, but I waved him off. “What happened?”
Carly’s words echoed in my ears. ‘The world is about to break.’ I looked up in horror as I heard a scream rip through the air. “The shield shattered.”
