Chapter 36
Chapter
Thirty-Six
ETHAN
Evie appeared in the middle of my Keep, her hair standing up like she’d been in a lightning storm. Her eyes were glowing and wild as they swept the area.
Sarah let out a terrified scream and scampered behind me.
Evie snorted with derision and stomped in my direction. Without a word, she grabbed me around the arm and ripped me away.
Wind tore at my hair and clothing for a few seconds before the earth lurched and I stumbled. Evie dropped my arm like it burned her and put her hands on her hips.
I landed on my ass and stared up at the goddess. “What the fuck, Evie?”
Her eyes began to glow with the color of watermelon tourmaline.
“Shut up and listen to me,” she snarled. “Moira has been taken.”
Rowan walked up behind his wife, his eyebrows lifted. The bastard never looked more than mildly surprised with his mate’s antics and today was no exception.
I was on my ass on the ground, my emotions all over the place, and his godsdamned wife was looming over me like a storm come to life. I could have both their heads for this, but her words had finally registered.
“Where?” I demanded.
“Somewhere in fucking Europe.” She let out a heavy breath.
“The vampire who made her found us. I’m not sure what the hell happened.
She asked me to take her somewhere. When we showed up, the place she wanted to see was gone.
The vampire—Liaza—came out from the trees and said he’d been looking for her since he made her. ”
She shook her head. “But the guy was shady as fuck, and before I could get her out of there, he tossed me away and grabbed her.”
Evie closed her eyes and shuddered. “That fucker was fast. Too fast.”
Rowan laid a hand on his wife’s shoulder. She put her hand over his and seemed to steady herself. “Whether you know it or not, you have a bond with her.”
A bond. I touched my chest and focused. Something warm pulsed there. I swallowed hard. Impossible.
The look on my face made Evie’s lips curl in disgust. “Yes, I’m aware you have someone at home.
No, I do not give a shit about that right now.
What I’m concerned about is my best friend being in the hands of someone who has done horrible things to her in the past. I’m afraid if we don’t find her in time, this will be the end.
” She bent over and stared down at me. “And if she dies, you will die. Do you understand?”
“Evie,” Rowan said quietly.
“No,” Evie snapped. “This asshole is responsible for a lot of this shit, and even though he doesn’t have his memories, he cares for Moira as much as I do, maybe even more.”
“I don’t know—”
She wiggled her finger in my face. “Exactly. You don’t know shit.”
“I am a Lord and you—”
“I AM A GODDESS,” Evie boomed.
Rowan and I locked eyes. Just when I thought he might intercede on my behalf, the bastard shrugged and gave me a sheepish smile. “Happy wife, happy life.”
Evie’s shoulders slumped. “Listen, Ethan. I can make you do whatever I want. We both know it. I’d rather you voluntarily help me because you want to help Moira.”
I stood and dusted myself off. “You trespass on Keep property and yank me away from Sarah and then scream at me about being a goddess. Asking for help doesn’t seem to be one of your strong suits.”
Her expression went flat. “Maybe. Emotional intelligence and dealing with your shit in a healthy manner doesn’t seem to be yours.”
My lips twitched. “Touché.”
Rowan snorted. “Perhaps we can take this inside, share a stiff drink and discuss a game plan before my wife decides to devour you whole?”
“Got any dinner?”
Rowan laughed. “And a chef who’ll make whatever we want.” He came over and slapped me on the back. “Come inside, and we’ll hash this out.”
