Chapter Thirty-Five
NOAH
The gym’s busy for a Friday afternoon, but it makes the day pass faster.
Though I enjoy working with Tyler and my sister, it’s not as fulfilling as it was to renovate.
For now, I’m managing the front desk, so I mainly register new members and scan others in.
Occasionally, I answer the phone and do random tasks as needed.
Basically, I’m a glorified receptionist, but I appreciate having a job until I find something permanent.
If someone had told me I would have a gun pointed in my face and the life of the woman I love threatened, I would’ve called them a liar.
The very moment I thought I could lose Katie for good, I didn’t hesitate to rush toward her.
I’d take a bullet for her any day but thank God for the vest that saved my life.
It’s been a month since that happened, and we’re finally getting back to normal.
Noah
Hey, baby. How’re you feeling today? How’s work?
I’ve never been more excited in my life to be a dad and start a family with Katie.
Finding out she was pregnant was a huge shock, but we’re excited about this next step in our relationship.
I love her more than I could ever express and can’t wait to make her my wife.
Though I wish I could take away her sickness, she’s taking it like a champ.
Katie
Great and great! Gonna leave work early and grab Owen before heading home. How about you?
Noah
Fine, it gets busy, then slows down for a bit. Hoping to leave early too.
Katie
YAY! Can’t wait to see you!!
I smile at her enthusiasm.
Noah
Love you, see ya soon!
Katie’s a strong woman, but I still worry about how she’s handling the incident—or rather, her lack thereof.
She didn’t have much time to process it before it was confirmed she was pregnant, and I’m worried she’s suppressing her feelings.
It was a tragic event for everyone involved, and I know I’ve pushed away my pain and bitterness by focusing on other things like our relationship.
Compartmentalizing emotions isn’t a new concept for me, though. It started when my mother passed away, then continued when I went to prison. I worked through the different stages of emotions the best I could.
First, I experienced denial that I had killed Gabe and was being charged with his murder.
Then I felt intense anger and took an unfair plea deal instead of risking being sentenced for longer.
Next came the bargaining, depression, and eventually—acceptance, which took years.
It didn’t mean I was fine with what happened or the outcome, but rather, I accepted I’d lost ten years of my life for an unintentional crime.
The only reason I didn’t spin out of control afterward was because redemption became my focus.
I felt so damn guilty for putting my father and sister through that while also not being there for Katie.
I didn’t give myself time to obsess about how I had to start over or how my life would never be the same.
I pushed through the fear and worked hard, which miraculously resulted in the outcome I wanted.
But not how everyone deals with life-altering events like that.
Katie hasn’t talked about it, and I don’t want to force her until she’s ready.
Instead, she’s focused on being pregnant more than anything.
I just don’t want her spiraling later on because she’s ignoring what happened a month ago.
I’m supporting her the best way I know how and will continue to do so.
Since I wasn’t around after Gabe passed and refused to see her once I went to prison, I don’t know if this is how she deals with things.
But if it is, I’m going to respect that.
After the accident, I bought a new truck. Thankfully, my dad agreed to cosign on the loan so I could get a reliable one with enough room for our growing family.
“You gonna make me one of those juice drinks?” I tease Gemma when she comes wobbling over.
“I might…if you ask nicely.” She smirks.
“Please,” I exaggerate. “Would my favorite sister in the whole world make me one?”
She rolls her eyes. “With a side of spit? Comin’ right up.”
“Last I checked, that wasn’t on the menu, so you can hold that.”
“Noah givin’ you a hard time again?” Tyler asks before kissing Gemma’s cheek.
“More like the other way around,” I counter.
“Oh, don’t be a baby,” she pokes.
Speaking of baby…
“Hey, make sure y’all aren’t late for dinner tonight. Katie’s been eager about it all week.”
We’re finally ready to tell our friends the incredible news, and I know they’ll be ecstatic and surprised. Katie planned a dinner so she could announce it to everyone at once.
“I wouldn’t dare.” Gemma beams. “And I can’t wait. It’s been too long since we’ve all been together.”
“Better remind Everleigh. She’d be late to her own funeral.” Tyler snorts.
“Already did.” I wave my phone. “Speaking of which, is it okay if I leave a little early? I wanna help Katie get everything ready.”
“Yeah, go ahead. I can manage the front until Caleb comes in for his shift.”
Now that more people are working out in the evenings, the gym stays open till ten.
“Thanks, man. I’ll see y’all in a bit.” I pat Tyler’s shoulder before heading out.
I drive to Katie’s and smile when I see her car in the driveway.
“Hey, buddy,” I greet Owen when I walk in. He’s in the living room watching TV.
“Hi, Noah!”
“Where’s your mom?”
“She’s taking a shower,” he tells me.
Perfect timing.
I kick off my shoes and pull off my shirt as I walk to the bathroom. Then remove the rest of my clothes before opening the curtain.
“What’re you doin’?” she exclaims, then slides her eyes down my body.
“Thought we could conserve water since I needed to rinse off too.” I grab her waist and carefully pull her closer to me. “I missed you.” Then I place a palm over her baby bump. “Missed my babies too.”
She whispers against my lips. “I missed you too. Are you excited to finally tell everyone? I’m waiting for them to freak the fuck out when they hear it’s twins.”
“Not as excited as I am right now.” I waggle my brows, and she giggles.
Katie wraps her hand around my shaft, and my breath hitches. “I can see that.”
I groan as she strokes me a few times, then circles the tip.
“Too bad we gotta get ready,” she taunts, removing her hand.
“Ohh, you’re a cruel woman.” I cup her breast and gently squeeze. “You’re gonna pay for that later,” I whisper in her ear.
“Hmm, yeah? Tell me all the ways you’re gonna punish me.”
Fuckin’ hell. She’s going to make me lose my goddamn mind.
“Oh, baby girl…” I growl hoarsely, then bring my hand between her legs and rub her clit. “You have no idea how hot you make me. Your round stomach, perky tits, and luscious ass. I’m gonna bend you over and tear you apart.”
Her head falls back with a throaty moan. “Okay, screw the party. We’ll text them the news instead.”
I bring my fingers to my mouth and taste her juices. “Nice try. You wanted to play this little game, sweetheart. Now you gotta wait your turn.”
She sticks out her bottom lip and pouts.
“Don’t worry. Later, I’ll eat that pussy until you’re coming on my face.” I flash her a wink.
“Be careful…that’s how you knocked me up in the first place,” she teases.
“Not like I can get you any more pregnant.” I shrug. “Hell, I hope to knock you up before you leave the hospital.”
“Noah!” She chuckles. “I don’t think you quite understand how giving birth works. We’ll have to wait six weeks after labor to have sex again.”
I pop a brow, unamused. “Six weeks? Like…in a row?”
She snorts, pushing the curtain back and stepping out while grabbing her towel. “Yes. Longer if you keep talking about knocking me up again. Two newborns will keep us plenty busy, trust me.”
My heart hammers in my chest because although I’ve had time to process the fact that we’re having twins, it cements the fact that I need to get a better-paying job.
The last thing I want is for Katie to have to take on most of the financial burden on top of everything else.
I need to figure it out sooner rather than later.
Ideally, I’d love for her to be able to stay at home while I’m working, but I’m not sure how that would be possible. Right now, I’m spending my free time on the house so it will be finished in the next three to four months. I haven’t had much time to look for something else, but I need to.
“Okay, fair enough,” I say, grabbing the soap. “I just love the idea of you carrying my child. So goddamn stunning.”
“As sweet as that is…” She grins. “It also comes with weeks of morning sickness, body aches, back pain, and pretty soon, you’ll be putting on my shoes. And the waddling.” She sighs.
“You’re a cute waddler. Plus, it tells everyone who sees your precious belly that you’re mine.” I move the curtain back so I can see her, and she blushes.
“Alright, caveman. Finish your shower. Imma try to find something to wear and get dressed.”
Once I’ve cleaned up, I head into Katie’s room and watch her dig through her closet. Since I’ve practically moved in after finding out she was pregnant, most of my clothes are here so I find a clean pair of jeans and a black T-shirt.
“Would you mind checking on the pot roast? I gotta blow-dry my hair and put on my face still. Oh!” She spins around before walking out. “Can you also make sure Owen’s ready? He was supposed to change out of his school clothes and into his new shirt.”
“I got it, baby. Go do your thing.” I move behind her and wrap my palm around her throat.
Carefully, I squeeze, making sure I only press on the sides of her esophagus so I don’t hurt her.
“Just know that whatever you’re wearing, I’ll be thinking of removing it,” I whisper in her ear, then kiss her neck.
She shivers with a moan. “You’re such a tease.”
I chuckle, then release her. “Just giving you a teeny tiny sample of how I felt during my youth. Blue balls for years.”
She turns around with an eye roll. “Don’t even get me started on whose fault that was.”
