Chapter Twenty-Four
DAN
‘Uhhh, where’s the other bed?’ Kallen’s quick to say, both of our eyes glued to the one bed before us.
I study our itinerary, clearly printed on a booklet of paper. ‘Yeah, it does say here that it would be a twin room configuration, so I’m not sure.’
‘We can always ask them,’ Kallen suggests.
My face falls. ‘Uh, yeah, sure. I mean, it was probably a mistake.’
‘Well, yeah, of course it’s a mistake,’ Kallen says, snatching the itinerary off me and marching out of the room.
I follow close behind him.
After taking the elevator back down to reception, Kallen marches over to the desk while I struggle to keep up.
We stand back in line.
‘Should we just leave it and deal with it?’ I ask, a flush creeping across my cheeks.
‘I mean, we can just ask,’ Kallen shrugs. ‘What’s the harm in that?’
As I’m saying this, Nicholas calls us over. ‘What can I do for you, gentlemen? You’re back already. ’
I look away, leaving Kallen to do the talking.
‘Hey, so, we were meant to be in a twin room,’ he says calmly, even though he seems far from calm. ‘And you’ve only given us one bed.’
Nicholas’ grin flattens a few inches. ‘Oh, Mister Jeffries, I’m very sorry about that. Let me just check your booking.’
‘No worries,’ Kallen says. ‘If we could just maybe change rooms to one with two beds, that would work much better for us.’
Nicholas winces at the computer. ‘We’re all booked up, I’m afraid.
So unfortunately, it isn’t possible. Looks like a room with two beds becomes available on your last night, which is Wednesday night.
But other than that, it isn’t possible. I’m truly sorry.
’ His gaze flicks to me then back to Kallen.
‘He doesn’t kill people in his sleep, does he? ’
My face heats as I cut in. ‘No, but we just thought it would be a twin room. That’s why we thought we would ask. It’s okay, though. We’ll make it work.’
‘Yeah, sorry about that,’ Nicholas says, sounding far from apologetic. ‘Slight human error on that front. It is a king bed in the room, though, so I’m sure it will be comfortable for the two of you. The mattress is ergonomic and absolutely divine to rest your weary head on.’
Kallen and I pass each other a puzzled look.
‘Is there anything else I can help you with, gentlemen?’ Nicholas asks, his grin reverting back to its original toothy size.
‘Uh…’ Kallen starts.
‘No, that’s fine,’ I finish for him .
‘Great. Well, I hope you both enjoy your stay, and again, if there’s anything else I can help you with.’ He winks. ‘I mean, anything. You just let me know. Aside from that, I’ll see you both at the party tonight.’
It’s our cue to leave the line and let the rest of the guests check in.
I shrug to break the silence. ‘At least the room is nice. And for the record, I promise I don’t kill people in my sleep.’
Kallan doesn’t seem convinced. Ultimately, I ask him what he would like to do this afternoon. He says he wants to stay in the room and have a bath, so I tell him I might check out the pool.
On my way down, I remind myself, much like a mantra, to make the most of the next three days. That everything will work out the way it’s meant to.
