4 | ☕️ The Café Mascot (Atlas Did Not Sign Up for This) ☕️
Atlas was back. Again.
At this point, the staff at the café had accepted the fact that Atlas Valtieri's visits had become a bizarre new routine, though none of them had the faintest clue why.
There was no rhyme or reason to it. But the moment he walked through the door, heads turned, and the atmosphere changed.
The regulars whispered behind their coffee cups.
Kaia had been keeping track-she'd even started making a mental tally, though she hadn't quite gotten around to putting up a "Days Since Atlas Valtieri's Last Visit" board, much to Anya's relief.
Still, it was clear that the pattern was becoming something of an unspoken joke.
And then, of course, there was Anya.
She acted like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Morning, Atlas!" she greeted cheerfully, completely unfazed by the powerful presence looming over the counter, like she was addressing just another customer.
Atlas, at his usual towering height of 6'7", loomed above her.
His expensive black suit could've paid for an entire month's worth of rent in this café, but he didn't even flinch at the casual greeting.
The gleaming gold cufflinks, the sharp, calculating look in his eyes-it was all still there.
But Anya? She didn't even blink. She didn't bat an eye.
It wasn't that she didn't understand who Atlas was.
Of course she did. It was just that his aura of cold authority, the mysterious billionaire CEO with an entire empire behind him, didn't faze her in the least.
He could intimidate CEOs, politicians, and even the most seasoned journalists with a single glance, yet Anya? She was immune.
Kaia, on the other hand, was about ready to pull her hair out. She muttered to herself as she watched this all unfold from behind the espresso machine. "You do realize you're the only person in existence who talks to him like that, right?" she asked, her voice a mix of disbelief and concern.
Anya, completely unfazed, didn't even look up from the coffee machine as she continued to prepare his order. "He keeps coming back. I figure he likes it."
Kaia shot her a look. "You're insane."
But Anya's attention was focused entirely on the task at hand.
As she expertly worked her way through the steps to make his coffee, she could feel Atlas's gaze on her, unrelenting and intense.
There was something about the way his eyes followed every single move, every flick of her wrist, that made her feel as though she were on a stage, performing a delicate dance for him.
The weight of his focus felt heavy in the air.
Most people would have been nervous under that kind of scrutiny, but Anya?
She only smiled more brightly. It was like she thrived under the pressure, something that most people couldn't understand.
And then came the fateful moment.
Anya, who had spent so many mornings preparing coffee without issue, made a tiny misstep.
She miscalculated the coffee grounds. It wasn't much-a small error that anyone could make-but the coffee machine did not forgive her.
There was a strange, ominous gurgle as the machine began to sputter. And then... disaster.
With a sharp, almost violent burst, the machine malfunctioned and released an enormous cloud of coffee grounds. The café fell into a stunned silence as the tiny storm of beans and powder shot out like confetti, coating everything in its path.
Anya herself? Covered head to toe in coffee grounds. Her clothes, her hair, her face-all of it was now a sad, caffeinated mess.
Kaia's eyes widened. "Anya..."
Anya, completely unfazed by the chaos around her, took a slow breath, looking at the ruined counter and the mess she had just created. "Well," she said brightly, "at least I know Atlas's order by heart now!"
The entire café held its breath. For a moment, there was nothing but silence. And then-
Atlas's gaze never wavered. He stood there, staring down at her in that intense, inscrutable way he always did.
His lips barely twitched as he processed the situation, his hands still gripping the coffee cup in his hand.
Then, as if finally deciding that the situation required acknowledgment, he did something that nearly dropped everyone in the room.
He signed.
The fluid motion of his hands-precise, deliberate, almost like a practised form of communication-caught everyone off guard. The room, still in shock, watched as his fingers moved through the air with confidence. Are you okay?
Kaia blinked rapidly. Her mouth opened in disbelief. Did Atlas Valtieri just ask if Anya was okay?
It wasn't that she didn't believe him capable of empathy.
It was more that no one had ever seen him show any.
Ever. He was a business machine-a CEO who lived by calculated, ruthless decisions.
But here, in the middle of this small café, in front of a few bewildered customers, he was... concerned? About Anya, of all people?
Anya, ever the optimist, didn't seem phased by this at all. She flashed him a bright grin, her coffee-coated arms still dusted in grounds. "Yup! Just got into a fight with the coffee machine. It won."
Atlas stood there for a moment, the intensity of his gaze unbroken, and then-he did something that completely shattered any remaining illusion that this was a normal café experience.
He handed her a napkin.
It wasn't grandiose. It wasn't some dramatic show of affection or concern. It was just a napkin. But the gesture was almost too human in its simplicity, too... normal. Too personal. And yet it was enough to send the entire room into a frenzy.
Kaia's jaw dropped. "HE CAN SHOW CONCERN?"
Anya took the napkin with a bright, unbothered smile. "Aw, thanks, Atlas. You're kinda sweet, huh?"
Sweet.
The word hung in the air, and for the first time in his life, Atlas's usual cool composure faltered. He froze. His heart skipped a beat. No one had ever called him that before-not in a real, genuine way, not without ulterior motives. Sweet.
And yet here she was-Anya, with her messy coffee-covered self, calling him sweet.
It was a concept so foreign to him, so utterly unexpected, that he didn't quite know how to respond. His chest tightened slightly, but before anyone could say a word, he did what any rational person would do: He grabbed his coffee-his very carefully crafted cup of coffee-and swiftly exited the café.
The door closed behind him, and the room went completely silent.
Kaia stood in stunned silence, her brain struggling to catch up with what had just happened.
Her mouth opened, closed, and then opened again as she tried to process the surreal turn of events.
She had seen some strange things in her time working at the café, but this? This was on a whole other level.
Her gaze flickered over to Anya, who was calmly wiping her hands off and brushing the coffee grounds from her clothes as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. Anya didn't even seem to acknowledge the gravity of the moment. In fact, she looked rather pleased with herself.
Kaia's brain short-circuited. "ANYA, YOU JUST CALLED THE SCARIEST MAN IN THE CITY SWEET!"
Anya looked up at her with a simple, nonchalant shrug. "I mean... he kinda is?"
Kaia's eyes bulged out of their sockets. She grabbed Anya by the shoulders, shaking her in disbelief. "DO YOU WANT TO DIE?!"
Anya blinked, looking mildly confused by Kaia's reaction. She wiped a little more coffee off her shirt, completely unfazed by the threat she had just issued the most powerful man in the city. "Relax, Kaia. I'm pretty sure I'm safe. He likes his coffee."
"LIKES HIS COFFEE?!" Kaia repeated, her voice pitched high, the words practically bursting out of her. "Anya, do you even know who you just called sweet? He's not just some guy! He's Atlas Valtieri! The man could end your entire existence before you even realized what happened!"
Anya leaned back against the counter, adjusting her apron and looking perfectly at ease.
"Oh, I'm pretty sure I do. He's got the whole business mogul, untouchable billionaire thing going for him, but... I don't know. He's not that bad. Besides, if he wanted to kill me, he'd have done it by now, right?"
Kaia's hands flew to her face in pure exasperation, as though she couldn't even comprehend what she was hearing. "You do realize he's a man who has ruined entire companies and ruined the lives of people who've crossed him, right? You think he wouldn't kill you over calling him sweet?"
Anya just smiled at her, her voice calm and collected. "I'm not exactly the first person to think he's a little bit sweet, though. You should've seen his face when I said it. It was almost... adorable."
Kaia turned to face the empty café floor, hands on her hips, as though trying to wrangle some semblance of order into the chaos that was her life. "Adorable? You really think Atlas Valtieri is adorable?"
"Oh yeah," Anya said with a grin, completely unphased. "He's got a lot going on under the surface, but I think he's got a soft side. Call it a gut feeling."
Kaia stared at her like she had grown a second head. "If by 'gut feeling' you mean 'wildly inaccurate assumption,' then sure. You have no idea how dangerous this is."
Anya shrugged again, casually brushing off the whole situation like it was just another day at the office. "He likes his coffee, Kaia. And he doesn't seem the type to hold a grudge over a harmless comment. If anything, I think I might've... cracked a little piece of that icy exterior."
Kaia was torn between wanting to shake Anya into understanding the full scope of the situation and laughing at her ridiculous optimism.
Instead, she chose to stare blankly at her friend, absolutely at a loss for words.
"You are the only person who could call Atlas Valtieri 'sweet' and not end up in an international incident. Do you even hear yourself right now?"
Anya merely chuckled, leaning over the counter to start wiping up the coffee mess more seriously now. "Hey, if he keeps coming back here and wants to keep getting his coffee, I'm not going to start changing how I talk to him. He's not that scary when you're not all jittery around him."
Kaia, still processing, walked slowly to the back of the café to collect herself. "You're absolutely insane."
Anya just smiled and went back to cleaning. "Thanks. I know."
Meanwhile, just outside the café, Atlas stood perfectly still.
He hadn't moved since he walked out, his tall frame stiff as a board, his sharp eyes locked on the coffee cup in his hand.
The bustling noise of the city, the chatter of pedestrians, the honking of taxis-it all seemed to fade into the background, like a distant memory.
Atlas was completely lost in his thoughts, staring down at the steaming cup of coffee he had been holding when he left.
Sweet.
The word echoed in his mind, over and over, reverberating like a lingering sound in a quiet room.
It was such a simple, unassuming word. A word that people would throw around casually, without much thought.
But Anya? She had said it to him, and it had cut through his armour in a way that nothing ever had. Sweet? He was sweet?
Atlas, the cold, calculating CEO who could destroy entire corporations with a single email, who had spent years building his empire from the ground up with ruthless precision, had never been called sweet in his life.
To hear it come from her-so effortlessly, so naturally-shattered something inside him.
For a fleeting moment, he found himself wondering if maybe, just maybe, she was right.
Maybe there was something in him that wasn't all steel and stone.
Maybe there was something soft under there, just waiting to be acknowledged.
The thought was enough to make him hesitate.
He looked around at the busy street, the people bustling by, but none of it seemed to matter anymore. His mind kept returning to Anya's words.
Sweet.
The corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly, betraying a hint of an emotion he hadn't wanted to acknowledge. She called me sweet...
Atlas shook his head, as if to rid himself of the strange warmth that was spreading through him. No. He couldn't allow himself to entertain such thoughts. He was Atlas Valtieri. He didn't have time for this.
But still... He will be back tomorrow. No question about it.
