CALEB
The hidden corridor curves around the vault.
Victor used it to bypass the steel door and rejoin the remaining Inner Guard.
He’s injured.
Angry.
Still dangerous.
Fathom scans the wall as we move.
“The vault chamber is ahead, but I don’t see an entrance.”
Mac points toward three intersecting corridors.
“The vault was designed so no one outside the First Circle could reach it directly.”
Cobra runs a hand along the concrete. “Every room has a door.”
“Not necessarily where you can see it,” Evie says.
She studies the floor.
A thin trail of blood crosses the dust.
Victor’s blood.
It ends at a blank wall.
“Here.”
Fathom sweeps his scanner over the concrete.
“Reinforced steel behind it.”
Cobra’s face brightens. “Now?”
Rook nods. “Controlled breach.”
“You do know how to make a man happy.”
Cobra places a shaped charge around the hidden locking mechanism.
We move back.
The explosion punches inward.
The concealed panel falls.
Beyond it waits the archive chamber we just left—but on the opposite side of the collapsed shelves.
The Warden is gone.
The Inner Guard isn’t.
Gunfire erupts from three directions.
Rook drops behind a steel cabinet.
Shark and Falcon take the opposite aisle.
Falcon’s injured arm is strapped tightly against his body, but he fires with his uninjured hand.
Fathom protects the evidence drives.
Evie moves behind the cabinet beside me.
An operator advances through the drifting dust.
She fires.
Her bullet strikes his thigh, taking him off his feet.
He reaches for his weapon.
Evie keeps her pistol trained on him.
“Don’t.”
The man looks from her to the rifle.
Then slowly raises his hands.
I glance at her.
“What?”
“You warned him.”
“He surrendered.”
“Proud of you.”
A smile flashes across her face.
“Very,” I add.
The Inner Guard begins withdrawing.
Not running.
Making space.
Rook sees it too.
“Cease fire.”
The final shots fade.
Silence settles over the ruined archive.
Falcon peers through the dust. “That’s new.”
“They’re repositioning,” Shark says.
“No,” Mac answers.
“They’re protecting something.”
He moves toward the black vault door exposed behind the fallen shelves.
Three concentric circles are carved across its surface.
Victor’s blood marks the floor beside it.
Evie joins Mac.
“They’ve spent decades murdering anyone who came close to this room.”
Rook looks at the team. “We aren’t leaving without opening it.”
A heavy impact shakes the hidden corridor behind us.
Victor has returned.
Cobra looks toward the breach.
“He brought company.”
Rook points toward the vault. “Mac, open it.”
“I don’t know how.”
“You remembered the tunnel.”
“That was different.”
Another impact sends cracks through the weakened wall.
Mac’s gaze drops to three circular plates set into the floor.
He becomes still.
“The pledge.”
“What?” Fathom asks.
“The Chairman used to say power is never trusted to one man.”
Mac kneels and brushes dust from the plates.
“The Chairman, the Warden, and an administrator opened the vault together.”
“Weight sensors,” Fathom says. “Mechanical. Nothing for me to hack.”
“We need three people,” Mac replies.
Rook steps onto the center plate.
I take the outer.
Shark stands on the inner.
Nothing happens.
Mac stares at the circles. “The sequence.”
Fathom examines the wear on the plates.
“The outer ring has the deepest markings.”
“The Chairman entered first,” Mac says. “The Warden second. The administrator last.”
We step away.
Then return in sequence.
Me.
Rook.
Shark.
A deep metallic sound rolls through the wall.
Clunk.
Ancient gears begin turning.
Victor’s voice comes through the broken corridor.
“Stop!”
For the first time, he doesn’t sound controlled.
He sounds afraid.
The vault door shudders.
And begins to open.
