Chapter 32

Thirty-Two

“ L et me grab you a blanket and some pillows. I’m sorry it’s not something more comfortable.” Lily gave Hawk a small smile.

“I’ve slept on the ground more times than I’d like to admit Lily. The couch is perfectly fine, thank you.”

“Thank you for staying the night. I know that Gunner would have been demanding to come home after his surgery if we were alone, and I feel so much better having him at the hospital, at least for tonight.”

“That’s what family is for.” Mae walked down the hallway in her pajamas.

“If that’s true, then why won’t you share the bed with me, sis?”

“Maybe because I know how much of a bed-hog you are and I’m not dealing with that. Besides, I’m not sure Lily would feel okay coming into Sage’s room in the middle of the night with you sleeping in there.”

“I really am sorry, Hawk.” She knew she was putting him out by asking him to sleep on the couch.

Hawk’s face turned red. “Lily, I promise I was just trying to tease my sister. I’m happy to be out here. I want to be near the door in case anyone tries to come in.”

“Do you think they will?”

“There’s really no telling what they’ll do next at this point.”

“Shut the hell up, Hawk.” Mae sent a scathing look at her brother, who must have noticed just how much that thought terrified her.

“It’s fine. I’d rather know what’s possibly coming our way than stick my head in the sand. Let me get you that stuff, Hawk.”

Lily found a blanket and a spare pillow and brought them back out to Hawk before telling the bickering siblings goodnight. She probably should stay up and see if they needed anything else, or at least offer to entertain them somehow, but she was too exhausted. All she wanted to do was run a bath and call Gunner to see how he was doing.

Shutting the door quietly behind her to not wake Sage, who was fast asleep in the bassinet next to their bed, Lily walked over to Gunner’s dresser and pulled out one of his shirts. She quickly changed into it before walking into the bathroom.

Dialing Gunner’s number, she laughed when he picked up after the first ring.

“I thought you might be fast asleep,” she said as she turned on the hot water and began filling the tub.

“I told you I wanted you to call before you went to bed. You’re such a good girl following through on my instructions.” His voice was low, and the words were filled with so much grit she shivered.

“Are you okay? You sound sleepy.”

“Nope. Not sleepy. Feeling happy to be alive, but I am really missing my beautiful wife. ”

“I wish I could have stayed over with you, but I couldn’t ask someone to watch Sage with everything that’s going on.”

“Of course not, Lil. I’m glad you’re home with her.” He took a loud breath in. “So, Mrs. Brooks. What are you wearing?”

She laughed. “Gunner, did they give you more painkillers after I left?”

“I’m sadly sober, and bored out of my mind since you went home. Indulge me, baby.”

“No. Absolutely not. You’re hurt and I’m certainly not going to have a nurse walking in on you while we’re…what? Having phone sex?” Even though she whispered the last two words, she still looked out at her closed bedroom door to make sure no one had overheard her.

“Mm, it sounds so dirty when you say it like that. I love it.”

“You need to knock it off. Get some sleep and then you’ll feel good enough to come home in the morning. We can ask your doctor if other things are safe tomorrow.”

“By other things, do you mean me spreading you out on the bed and eating you like a buffet?”

“Gunner!” Her emotions oscillated between red hot embarrassment and fiery need.

“Just trying to rile you up, baby. Is it working?”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course it’s working. Knock it off. You were shot today. My God! You could have died. What if you do this and your blood pressure rises?”

“Now, see, the only person’s blood pressure I’m concerned about is yours, Lil. You need to relax. And I can think of only one way to get your endorphins flowing so you can release all the stress from today.”

“I can’t! Mae is in the room just across the hall, and Hawk is sleeping on the couch in the living room! Isn’t Stone in the room with you? God, Gunner, I’m going to die of embarrassment.”

“There are doors and walls separating you, Lil. Just be quiet and they won’t hear a thing. And I sent Stone out into the hallway to let me say a proper goodnight to my wife.”

“I don’t?—”

“We’re doing this. Unless you plan to hang up on me and make me call you back a hundred times until you are so irritated, you fold and pick up, anyway. So, take off whatever shirt of mine you found to sleep in tonight, Lil. Do it now.”

“It’s my favorite.”

“My gray Navy one?”

“Yes,” she whispered. “It’s so soft against my skin and it smells like you.”

“What are you wearing underneath?”

She laughed as she raised the hem of the shirt, pulling the phone away from her face for a moment to get the top off.

“What do you think I’m wearing? Three guesses and you’ll win a prize if you get it right.”

“A prize…hmm. Do I get to pick what that prize is? Because a day spent actually making love to you while Mae babysits Sage so we have no interruptions is at the top of my list.”

Lily laughed. “I can’t imagine ever leaving her, Gunner. Not after today. We’ll just have to get creative.”

“Oh baby, I’m already thinking of so many ways to be creative. With my tongue. And my cock. My fingers, too.”

“Jesus.”

“Nope,” he chuckled. “But I do plan on making you see heaven the next time I sink into you.”

“Guess,” she said breathlessly. The man could do dirty talk, and while that had never really been a turn on for her before, something about the filthy way Gunner talked to her had her already feeling wet and warm between her legs .

“Something lacy?”

“First strike,” she teased. “Guess again.”

“Something black?”

“Nope.” She popped the word out of her mouth and bit down on her lower lip.

“Are you being naughty, baby? Are you trying to trick me? Maybe you’re not wearing anything under that shirt of mine.”

She giggled.

“Tell me, Lil,” he growled.

“You were right. I’m not wearing anything. My skin feels like it’s on fire, Gunner, and yet freezing at the same time.”

“Is that water running for the tub?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Get in, Lil.”

“Give me one second to grab my earbuds. I’d hate to have my phone slip into the water.”

Gunner laughed as she made her way out to the dresser and popped one bud into her ear, leaving the other one out in order to hear Sage. Setting her phone next to the sink, she slipped her body into the bath, hissing at the warmth that immediately enveloped her body.

“All set?” he asked as her breath hitched again.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Good. Close your eyes and slide your hand down your body, Lil. Imagine I’m there, nipping at your ear. Sucking your nipple into my warm, wet mouth while your hips writhe beneath me, begging my cock to take away the ache building in your core.”

“Gunner,” Lily closed her eyes as her fingers circled her clit. “God, I wish it was you touching me right now. I wish I was touching you.”

“I am touching you, beautiful. Can’t you feel me? My fingers are traveling across your collarbone, where my teeth stop to take a nip of the delicate skin. They’re moving across your chest, teasing those beautiful rosy nipples of yours. When they’ve had their fill of that, they’ll slip down your belly, down into that perfect pussy…”

Holy fu–

“Now, tell me what you feel like,” he commanded.

“Can you not remember? Did you also hit your head today?” she teased.

“I will never forget the way you feel wrapped around me, Lil. I just want to hear you say the words.” His voice was tight with restraint.

“I’m soft. A little like velvet. But warm. And wet. So wet, Gunner, and it’s not from the bath.”

“Slide two fingers inside yourself, Lil. Imagine it’s me, thrusting into your pussy. I’m so fucking hard for you, baby. I was made for your warm heat. It’s mine.”

She moaned as her fingers slipped inside herself.

“Oh, god. Gunner!”

“That pussy is mine, baby. It’s just for me.” She waited for more instructions, but he sat silent for a moment. “Tell me it’s mine, Lily. That you were made for me. That you’ll always be just for me.”

“I’m yours. Every inch of me is only for you. Always, and forever, Gunner. It’s always been yours.”

Shit, she was so close. Her fingers curled and found the spot where a thousand nerve endings came together. Her hips bucked as she pressed in, running her fingers over her slick velvet walls.

“I’m there, oh shit. I’m so close.”

“Good girl. Come now. I want to hear you scream my name across the phone before Stone comes back in here and catches us.”

The fear of someone overhearing what they were doing made the fire burning inside her belly turn into an inferno, molten honey-like tendrils of pleasure coursing through her body as her orgasm took hold. There was some distant part of her mind that was still acutely aware of Mae and Hawk, so instead of screaming his name like her orgasm was telling her to do, she moaned. All the fear, the stress, and worry she’d been carrying since those horrible people showed up to take their baby away was released from her body.

“I’ve never done something like that before,” she whispered.

“Neither have I, Lil. I’m glad we got to do that together.”

“Are you okay? Hearing me like that…it didn’t hurt, did it?”

“Oh, it hurts. Just in the best way. You better be here first thing tomorrow to help me take care of the pain.”

“Gunner, I am not getting you off in the hospital. Besides, we need to ask if you are cleared for that kind of activity.”

“Stubborn woman.”

Lily laughed.

“I love you, Gunner.”

“I love you too, Lil.”
