Chapter 20 – Isolde
Late afternoon settles over the abandoned industrial complex on Rome’s outskirts, and I crouch low behind a rusted steel drum, my boots grinding into the gravel and shattered glass beneath me.
My gun sits heavy in my hand, its cold metal grounding my grip as my auburn hair lashes around my face, wild and knotted from days of flight and sleepless nights.
My coat, streaked with mud, flaps around my legs as I sweep my eyes across the broken concrete ahead, every muscle taut, senses sharp, tracking the danger creeping closer.
Azrael stays beside me. His Beretta lifts high.
Gray eyes sharpen beneath his dark hair.
Three weeks stretch since that attack. Three weeks of moving filled our days.
We plan and fight shadows that refuse to stay dead.
Leonardo’s men hunt us. Emilio’s loyalists chase us too.
Remnants of Leone’s empire join the pursuit.
They’ve tracked us despite the villa’s blaze.
Whispers of our survival spread like wildfire.
Marcella’s cover blows from some traitor we’ll never name.
We’ve run north and south. We dodge bullets and blades. Running’s not enough, though.
They’ll never stop. These ghosts of our past linger. Father’s betrayal haunts me. Azrael’s father’s bounty shadows him. Cassian’s blood stains us both. We must end it. This is our final act of defiance.
We’ve carved a plan in the dark. Lure them here. Trap them. Kill them all. Eliminate the threats. Bury the past for good.
I whisper, keeping my voice low and steady. “Five on the west gate.” I peer through a gap in the drum. My breath fogs in the chill.
“Three east. Rifles, heavy gear. Leonardo’s crew. Maybe Emilio’s too. They’re closing in.” My gaze flicks to Azrael. His jaw clenches. Resolve etches the hard lines of his face.
He mutters, his voice rough.
“Eight total. More inside, I’d bet.”
He shifts beside me. His shoulder brushes mine. It’s a fleeting warmth against the cold. “Trap’s set. Marcella’s got the east rigged. Gas leaks, one spark, they’re done. Cassian’s men hold the west flank. Explosives are ready. We draw them in. Center warehouse. End it there.”
I nod. Resolve hardens within me. My hand tightens on the gun. Marcella slipped us word two days ago.
A coded note came through a dead drop. Her loyalty holds unshaken despite the villa’s fallout.
She brings the last of Cassian’s crew. They’re scarred but fierce.
We’ve planned this. We lured them with false trails and whispers of our location.
Here, now, the concrete maze and rusted traps become our battlefield.
“Together,” I say. My voice steadies. I meet his gray eyes. Love burns as a fierce thread beneath the tension. “One last fight. Then free.”
He nods. A faint smile tugs his lips. It’s bitter and fierce.
His hand grips my arm, steady and sure. “Together. No going back. Kill them all or die here. Freedom’s the prize.
” His voice hardens. Resolve cuts through the wind’s bite.
I feel it. Our past looms as a ghost we’ll bury today. No matter the cost.
A shout echoes from the west gate. It’s harsh and guttural. Boots pound gravel as shadows move. Five figures appear with rifles raised. They spread out. Leonardo’s men show their swagger. Their black gear patches with faded D’Angelo sigils. I shift. My gun steadies. I fire once.
My shot catches the lead man’s leg. Blood sprays as he drops.
He howls and clutches the red blooming across his thigh.
Azrael fires two shots. They’re clean. One hits a chest. Another takes a headshot.
Bodies crumple. Blood pools dark on the concrete.
Chaos erupts as the others scatter. They shout. Rifles bark in response.
He snaps, his voice fierce. “Move!” He grabs my arm.
He pulls me up as bullets ping off the drum.
Metal screeches. Sparks fly. We sprint low and fast. Gravel crunches underfoot.
Wind bites my face as we weave through rusted hulks.
The central warehouse looms ahead. It’s a cavernous shell of steel and shadow.
Its broken doors gape like a maw. Marcella’s signal flares red and sharp from the east side
A dull boom follows. Gas ignites. Flames roar as screams cut the air. Three bodies engulf in the blaze. Silhouettes thrash before collapsing into the fire.
West explodes. It shakes the ground. Concrete cracks.
Two more of Leonardo’s men shred apart. Blood and limbs scatter.
Their rifles silence in the debris. I pant, my voice rough.
“Five down.” I slip into the warehouse. Azrael moves beside me.
Our trap closes as shouts rise. More come now—Emilio’s men—gray patches on their gear—rushing the center, drawn like moths to our flame.
We duck behind a rusted conveyor. Guns lift high.
My breath steadies as I fire. My shot tears through a throat.
Blood sprays. He gurgles as he falls. Azrael’s bullet catches another in the chest. Red blooms as he crumples.
He clutches his ribs. Azrael growls, his voice fierce.
“Three left. Inside!” He nods toward the shadows deeper in.
Footsteps echo there—heavy and fast—rifles swinging as they close.
I hear it. A shout rings out. Leonardo’s voice rasps, furious. “They’re here. Kill them!” My gut twists. Guilt and rage surge. My brother—my blood—hunts me still.
I whisper, my voice breaking. “Leo.”
My gaze flicks to Azrael. His eyes blaze, fierce and steady. His hand squeezes mine. Quick. Firm.
We move. Flanking. Guns barking. My shot clips a shoulder. Blood sprays. He drops.
Azrael finishes him. Headshot. Red mist in the dim light. Two remain. Leonardo and one more.
They rush us. Rifles blazing. Bullets zing past. Concrete shatters.
I dive. Roll. Fire.
My shot catches the last man’s leg. Blood gushes. He falls, screaming.
Azrael ends him. Clean. Bullet through the skull.
Silence falls, sharp and sudden.
Leonardo emerges. Alone. Gun raised. Eyes wild.
My brother. A ghost I can’t bury.
His voice rasps, cutting the silence. “You traitor. You chose him over us, over family, over me.”
He fires wild. The bullet zings past my head. Concrete shatters. I duck and roll. My gun steadies. I fire back. My shot clips his shoulder. Blood sprays. He staggers and curses. His gun swings again, fierce and desperate.
I shout, my voice breaking. “Leo, stop!”
Pain twists inside me as I lunge. I tackle him low.
My shoulder slams his gut. I drive him to the ground.
Gravel bites my knees. His gun skitters across the concrete, out of reach.
He thrashes, strong. His elbow smashes my jaw.
Pain flares sharp. I hold tight. My knife presses at his throat.
Cold steel digs into his skin. Blood trickles where it nicks.
His eyes blaze with hate and hurt, a mirror of my guilt and grief. I mourn for what we’ve become.
He spits, his voice venomous. “You killed us. Father. Everything. For him.” He struggles beneath me. His blood warms my hand. His breath rasps, wild. “You’re dead to me. Always will be. Should’ve ended you back then.”
Tears sting my eyes. Grief surges for the brother I loved and the family I lost. Resolve hardens, cold and fierce, as I press the blade. His throat bobs. Fear flickers in his green gaze. He knows I’ll do it. He knows I’ll end it here.
Azrael steps close. His gun rises. His voice cuts low and fierce. His shadow falls over us. “She didn’t kill you. Your greed did. Your hate. Emilio’s. Leone’s. It’s done, Leo. Let it go or I will.”
His gray eyes lock on mine. Love steadies within them. Resolve mirrors my own, a pact forged in blood. I nod slowly. My knife remains steady.
Leonardo’s breath hitches. His fight fades. His voice whispers, bitter and broken. “Do it, sister. Finish it.”
I hesitate. Grief grips my chest like a fist. Pain roars for him, for us. I know freedom’s the cost. Home is gone, reduced to ashes. I can’t let him rise and hunt us again.
I press harder. My blade slices deep. Blood gushes, hot and slick, over my hand. His eyes widen in shock and pain. A gurgle escapes. Then silence falls. His body slumps, lifeless. Green eyes stare blank. My brother dies, a ghost I’ve killed to bury the past and set us free.
I drop the knife. My hands tremble. Blood drips. I stagger back.
Azrael’s arms catch me, fierce and steady. He pulls me close. His chest warms against mine. His breath rages, ragged. Love cuts through the pain and sorrow, a lifeline through the ruin.
“It’s over,” he mutters, his voice thick. His hand grips mine. Blood and mud bind us.
“He’s gone. Threats ended. No home. No going back. But free. Together.”
I nod slowly. Tears streak my face. Grief crashes over me for Leonardo, for Cassian, for Father. I mourn for the D’Angelos I burned and for the cost we’ve paid. Home is lost forever. Resolve settles, bitter and sweet. Freedom wins at a price I’ll carry always.
“Together,” I whisper, my voice breaking. My hand tightens in his.
I look back. Marcella’s man, Tommaso, limps up, bloodied but alive. The other men drag bodies. Silence falls heavy. The war’s end is a tomb around us.
We walk away, hand in hand. Gravel crunches beneath our boots. Shadows swallow the complex. The ruins of our past, Leonardo’s body, and our families’ ashes are left behind. We carve a future that is ours, chosen. It’s not home, but it’s freedom.
The wind bites cold. Twilight deepens. Stars prick the sky.
