Chapter Forty-Eight
Brynne
I pull into the parking lot of the office and look around before heading to the building. I don’t see anyone waiting with a gun for me. The boys tried to come with me, but I told them I would be fine. I just need to pick up some files so I can get caught up from missing yesterday. I may work from home for a few days next week. I don’t think anyone would be able to get to me at the office. I don’t need this mess coming to my workplace in the first place.
I scan my card to enter the building and walk over to my office door. I hear someone in the bathroom and instantly reach for the knife in my bag. Then Adam walks out of the bathroom completely catching me off guard. He jumps when he sees me in the hallway.
“Jesus, you scared me,” he says. I tuck the knife bag in my bag.
“Sorry I just had to grab some files from my office,” I point to my door.
“How are you feeling?” Adam asks.
“What? ”
“You called out yesterday because you weren’t feeling good,” he says confused.
“Oh yeah. I’m feeling a little better today. That’s why I’m here. I need to get caught up and get my files. I might work from home a few days next week,” I explain. Adam nods and glances out the window. “I didn’t see your car out in the parking lot. Did you get dropped off?” I ask.
Adam looks nervous but nods. “Were there any other cars out there?”
“Not that I saw why?” I ask curiously. Does he think someone is waiting for him?
“Can I tell you something in confidence?” I think about it for a minute and decide to say yes. As much as I could care less about Adam, maybe he could tell me something useful about Robert.
“Yes sure,” I walk us into my office and he sits on the couch. “What did you need to tell me?” I ask.
He leans forward. “I think someone is following me,” he whispers.
“You don’t need to whisper. No one else is here but us. What makes you think you’re being followed?” I urge.
Adam looks to the window again and fidgets with his fingers. “The other day when you saw that woman here,” he pauses. “You knew who she was, or at least your friend did,” he gulps. “I didn’t mean for the affair to go on this long, but I just never cut it off. I think her husband found out and sent someone to follow me.”
“ Why would he do that?” I push.
“I don’t know, but I can’t shake the feeling of eyes on me everywhere I go. I can’t even sleep at night in my own home. I’ve been sleeping here because you need a key to get into the building and the security system is better than the one I have at home. I think I’m in danger Brynne,” Adam cries out.
“Why don’t you go to the police?”
“ I want to, but I’m scared to leave this place,” he
admits. I think of the last time I saw Adam here. How could he stay here all day and all night?
“You don’t leave at all?” I ask.
“No,” he says quietly.
“What about food?”
“I have it delivered,” he confides. “I need help,” he
begs.
“I can drop you off at the police station, but I can’t stay with you. I have to get back home,” I offer.
“Thank you so much, Brynne. I owe you one,” he takes a breath of relief. He won't owe me anything because he is going to be dead soon. If that guy came for Damon and failed, then Adam is next on his list. I thought he would have taken out Adam first, but what do I know, I’m not a hitman, just a serial killer.
I grab my files and Adam cowers at the front door like a dog. I look out the window and grab his arm. He cautiously walks to my car with me. As soon as he gets in, he looks in my back seat. “Never can be too cautious,” he fakes a laugh. He is truly losing his mind.
We pull into the station parking lot and I wait for Adam to get the hell out of my car. My phone pings and I look down at Clara’s text. I don’t know why she is tracking me right now. Adam looks around and waits for a police officer to exit the building before getting out of the car .
“Thank you again, Brynne,” he babbles. I nod and drive off before he even gets through the front door. If he gets picked off in front of the police station, then this hitman has balls. I text Clara back and tell her that I’m heading home now and to get off my back. I understand they're worried about my safety, but they don’t need to track my every move.
I pull into the driveway and see Matteo’s grandfather’s car gone and Damon’s car in the driveway. We should honestly just scrap the thing because it's practically falling apart in my driveway. I pull in behind his car. I press the button to open the garage and don’t see Ryker’s car either.
“Where’s the keys for the car?” I ask when I walk through the door. Sawyer points to the wall.
“Why?” Damon asks from the couch.
“I’m moving your car into the garage that way when it falls apart it will already be in there,” I tease.
“That car will outlive yours. Just watch,” Damon
pushes. Sawyer smirks as I grab the keys and move his car inside the garage. I pull in on the other side and close the doors. I set the alarm for the garage doors and head back
inside.
“Where’s Ryker and Matteo?” I ask.
“Matteo had to give the car back to his Gramps and Ryker went home,” Sawyer says.
“This is his home,” I stress. Damon turns toward me and his eyes soften before going back to the television.
“His dad came back today and he had to be home. He's going to pick up Matteo on the way back here tonight,” Sawyer adds. I think about Ryker’s dad and how he is going to react when he tells him he is moving out. No parent should have that kind of control over their child when they're grown. His father sounds controlling which is far from what Ry is like. I wonder what his mother is like if that is how his father acts.
I could never be with someone who tries to control everything, but yet I am with four men who demand something every second of the day. I smirk and head for the kitchen for some lunch. “You'll never guess who I ran into at the office,” I say from the kitchen. I turn around to Sawyer and Damon standing in the doorway.
“Who?” They both ask in unison.
“Adam. He has been holed up there for days, maybe weeks even. He knows someone is following him and he is going a bit crazy. He told me about Tara and was super freaked out about being watched. I had to drop him off at the police station,” I explain.
“That prick is still alive?” Damon asks.
“I guess,” I shrug.
Sawyer looks at Damon and then at me. “Why would he try to kill you first?” he asks.
“I don’t know, but if he failed with me then he is going to make sure he doesn’t with Epson,” Damon says with a smug look on his face. I should feel bad that one of my colleagues is going to get brutally murdered, but honestly, Adam is useless and the office won't be much different without him.
“I don’t know if he will be able to get to him now that he has gone to the police. Won't they put him in protective custody or have a cruiser patrol his place?” I ask.
“If this guy is as skilled as we think then this isn’t going to stop him,” Sawyer says.
I take a bite out of my sandwich. “Then I guess it's
goodbye Adam then,” I shrug. They both smile and my knees get weak. If I wasn’t sore from yesterday then I would jump them both right now. I need to be at my best for tomorrow. Thankfully my period is light today and should be done tomorrow. I got a brunette wig to wear and fake wedding rings for both of us.
We have gone over the story over and over to make
sure we don’t fuck anything up. We have to make sure we are believable, especially playing as high school sweethearts. It will be fun to pretend to have a normal life for once, but I don’t think I'll ever have that in my life. There will always be another person who deserves to die, and we will be there to get the job done.
